Anyone gone to court and beat this? (I'm in Canada btw)
What are the chances? I never admitted fault to the officer and the ticket was given to me in a construction zone...

Stop whining and pay the fine. Are you so bum poor you can't pay a speeding ticket?
You're in Ontario, aren't you?

No worries. In the future, you won't be able to speed.
Canadians are testing out a system that combines onboard Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology with a digital speed limit map. It works very much like the in-car GPS navigation systems which have become so common on late model cars -- but with a twist. Instead of helping you find a destination, the system, prevents you from driving any faster than the posted speed limit of the road you happen to be on.
As in a conventional GPS-equipped car or truck, the system knows which road you're on, as well as the direction you're traveling. This information is continuously updating as you move. But in addition to this, the system also acquires information about the posted speed limit on each road, as you drive. Once your vehicle reaches that limit, the car's computer makes it increasingly difficult to go any faster.
They'll probably just make it to where you CAN go over the speed limit, but not without getting a ticket. They won't need cops on partol anymore, they'll just let their GPS sattelites do the surveillance.

Eventually they'll just send you an aerial photo of you on the road attached to the speeding ticket.

There are ways you can get out of it, but you'll have to remember everything that was going on when you got it. Was it raining? Rain tends to screw up the cop's speedometer thingay. Were there other vehicles around that were larger, or closer to the cop? The speedometer usually goes for the biggest and closest target.
Or you can go to treffic school. At least in the U.S. you can.

it'll never take off, everyone knows as posted above that speed limits only exist to make money for the gubernment, so basicly this system would put an instant stop to that cashcow, if you can't speed how are they going to ticket you!!
so which part of that do you not agree with? That speedlimits are only there to make money for gubernment and insurance companies? or that this speed limited by GPS stuff will not take off? or that most speed limits are infact artificially low and stupid? Or that Elvis is actually alive?

That speedlimits are only there to make money for gubernment and insurance companies?
That.
They don't pull those numbers out their ass, you know? At least where I live, they consider friction (including effects of weather), momentum, angle across the road, traffic, population density, and a bunch of other things. Contrary to what you may think, the government can actually lose money by making the limit too low, since it helps reduce market efficiency (try getting to work, or moving shit across the country).
BUT OH NOES THATS NOT IT, THEYRE OUT TO GET YOUR CASH MAAAAAN!
Then my friend there is no hope for you if you actually believe that bullshit, cause you know what if they were actually taking physics into consideration when setting speed limits they would all be way higher. Either that or the laws of physics are different in parts of Germany, at least the few parts where the autobahn still has no limits???
Why do you think insurance companies give away free radar and laser guns to cops? hmm the goodness of their hearts, yeah ok 9.9
>>18
Then why do completely straight, multiple mile long stretches of freeway always have speed limits of 65mph? Hell, you could go 120 in some areas of the I-5 and still be perfectly fine. I'm not saying that it's a money-making conspiracy like >>17 seems so concerned about, but you've got to admit that a lot of the speed limits are pretty bullshit-low.
There's a street near me that has a 10mph posted speed limit. Have you ever looked at your speedometer and consciously tried driving at 10mph before? Utterly ridiculous.
>>20 "Why do you think insurance companies give away free radar and laser guns to cops? hmm the goodness of their hearts, yeah ok 9.9"
Well, now you're talking about the insurance companies being sneaky, not the cops/government themselves.

I challenged my tickets in court and 3 out of 4 times the officer fails to show up. There's a good chance the officer won't be there if you challenge the ticket and you live in a big city.
insurance companies and cops, they are both making money off ticketing you with ridiculous speed limits, there is not reason for some of the low speed limits out there today.
I don't know why you guys are making this into a 'conspiracy' there is no conspiracy, they make money end of story its right out in the open.

There's an easier way to generate that revenue, you know? Leave a faster speed limit and jack up the fines. Ooooh, hard!
But wait, that can't be it! They're keeping lower speed limits not to keep us safe, but to make oodles of moolah!
YEAH, THAT'S IT! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PHYSICS, REACTION TIME, AND DEAD PEOPLE! NOOOOOO!

higher speed = more air resistance. at 140mph your car is essentially swimming through the air. maybe they're concerned about your fuel efficiency.

Just make sure the ticket is valid - any details that are incorrect/inconsistent information. You could be off the hook on a technicality if the ticket is not valid; so a date, a time, description, anything.
It might also be possible to argue that you needed to be driving that speed in order to avoid harm, or something. Can you give any more details about the scenario? or where you just straight out speeding on a completely straight road, lol

Speed limit on that road was 80 kms but because of construction, it was reduced to 60kms. The speed trap was set approx 20M before the "thank you, resume speed" sign was posted.
Clear day, was in right lane but person on left was speeding ahead of me but was pulled over regardless going about 77kms.
Plenty of things to argue in this case, but I have no idea if this would even work... The technicality thing with the valid ticket doesn't apply anymore. Basically cops can fuck up your name, address and liscence # and STILL give you a ticket as long as they can point you out in court...

I wasn't talking about a street anywhere near a school, actually. It's part of the street my friend lives on--a through-street with houses on one side.
Now if you want to hear about a *really* bad ticket story, listen to this. One night when I was driving back from class (it ended at about 9PM), I stopped to get gas. Shortly after I pulled into the station, I noticed a cop drive slowly into the parking lot next to the place, turn off his lights, and proceed to sit in his car and just *stare* at the gas station. It kind of worried me--I thought he might have followed some suspicious looking individuals to the place or something.
Anyway, I filled my tank and left as soon as I could. I drove out onto the road, then almost immediately afterwards, saw a bunch of red and blue lights flashing behind me. I was thinking "what the fuck??" but then I noticed that I didn't have my headlights on. The guy pulls me over, tells me that he thought I "might be drunk because I didn't have my headlights on," acknowledges that I'm obviously not drunk, then gives my a ticket anyway for my headlights. That's right, the fucker actually ticketed me for having my headlights off.
It was actually kind of funny in traffic school. They always try to make people admit that they "deserved" their ticket and should have been more careful, but the instructor was at a loss for words when I told him what my violation was. He just said something like "well, er... that's kind of weird... headlights are important, but he really gave you a ticket for that?" Anyway, half the point was that I would have probably remembered to turn them back on if there weren't a fucking cop sitting outside the gas station staring at me.
So why does traffic always seem to skip along at least 20KM/h faster than the posted limit of a 100 when there are no cops around? Gee guess everyone must be dead by now, because no one here (Toronto) drives at the speed limit on highways etc when no cops are around. I am obviously talking when traffic it self allows those speeds. Yup must be because going 120 and keeping with the flow of traffic is less safe than going at 100, so guess all you people in Montana are so screwed now, since your speed limit is 75 Mph about 120 you're all dead!
Gimme a break safety my ass!!

Probably because it isn't raining at the time, you dumb shit.
Until we have signs that change based on conditions, limits have to take that into account too. You can't say "Oh, we'll let them be the judge!" because there are way too many idiots. Having one fixed limit makes things a lot simpler.
Aren't Canadians supposed to be intelligent? You belong in FREEMEN MONTANA, WE DON'T NEED NO GUB'MENT.
Guess whos the idiot? The limits are set for good road conditions, if it is wet you are actually supposed to be going slower than the limit, or is that something new for you?
And again my point that you keep dodging is that the speed limits are arbitrary, does it not rain on the Authobahn? or in Montana, so how do you justify the discrepancy between those limits or lack of on certain stretchs versus our 100Kph.
And no most Canadians are idiots or they wouldn't think a failing and bloated socialised healthcare system is "zOMG the bestest in da world" and they wouldn't have voted for a bunch of criminals over and over again (fiberals) and even now 70% of them voted for either the Liberals (criminals/socialists), the BQ (frogs/commies) or the NDP (commies) so 70% of Canadians are fucking morons who leech off the 30% who actually earn anything worth paying taxes on.
And no most... <snip>... anything worth paying taxes on.
You're either a redneck from Alberta, or a Yank visiting from the US. You're dumb enough for either. Baaaaa.

First link shows road geometries, yes well done, and most roads now are designed for far higher speeds than we are "allowed" to go at. take the 407 for example, thus re-enforcing my point that the speed limits are artificially low.
Next
studies funded by independant source:
"The study was funded by the Federal Office of Road Safety of the Australian Department of Transport and Regional Development and supported by the secondment of an engineer from the South Australian Department of Transport. "
And as for me no I am stuck right above the GTA, thank goodnes I don't have to put up with that blithering idiot of a mayor that Toronto elected for themselves.
I guess you're right about the dumb part, I must be fucking retarded to still live here while paying 30K in taxes every year? How much do you pay in taxes?
AHHHHH! CONSPIRACY! CONSPIRACY! ALL THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD ARE OUT TO GET YOU! EVEN THE ELECTED ONES! AND THE UNIVERSITIES ARE IN THEIR POCKET TOO!
Go see a shrink you Roswell-worshiping retard. You're suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.
can you ever answer the question? BTW I am not >>39 and am not really sure WTF he's talking about...but anyway
So you give me links for road geometries, which as I pointed out current road design takes into account much higher speeds than we are allowed to go at, so now where is your safety argument? The road was already designed to be safe at higher speeds? So if the government wasn't so concerned about their pocket books why not increase the speeds? even on those roads only if safety is a concern? You know why because the insurance loby and the police loby won't let them.
No conspiracy here, just facts I posted links before how speeding is mega bucks for the government.
Also you never responded to my earlier point if as you say safety is the overiding factor in speed limits why is there no consensus on speed limits globaly?? Why is it safe on certain stretches of the autobahn to have no limit at all and why is 75 mph (120kph) safe in Montana when we are restricted to 100 Kph over here?
So you going to answer or just dodge and call me an oh noes conspiracy theory guy?

What question? All I see from you is the GRAND CONSPIRACY. LET'S JUST IGNORE ALL THAT RESEARCH INTO DANGER WILL ROBINSON HIGH SPEED! TEH GOVERMENT IS AFTER MY DOUGH LOL!
How about you actually read the last two links instead of claiming "zOMG BIAS IT'S FUNDED BY THE GOVERNMENT!" If you're so fucking lazy, just look at the graphs.
Fucking hell. Take your antipsychotics already. The voices are telling you to.
Ok I'll make it simple for you: why can certain stretches of the autobhan have no speed limit (and I have seen those streches and they are not much different from our highways here) while we get 100kph on perfectly straight stretches of multilane highway, eg parts of the 407, the 400?
