It's a special episode(probably a fan-service episode) that will be streamed on USTREAM, and the disc will be bundled with the novel.
It takes place between episode 11 and 12.
Nishigori could do good stuff in an action show but it doesn't really matter, at this point it's almost certain that this is Umetsu. The fact that Umetsu talked about being hard at work on a bishoujo show in his blog a while ago is pretty telling.
>>29
It's hard to say, animators use references for alot of things all the time. Top tier animators from Ghibli or Madhouse will go out and record footage of actions to use as reference. Like for Spirited Away, when Chihiro feeds the dragon some medicine, they visited a vet and saw something similar done with animals and they used that for reference.
Or for a movie I can't recall now, but there was a woman running along the road, they had a girl dress up in a coat and run behind a camera mounted on a truck and used that as reference. So yeah, there are a lot of movements which I'm sure animators are not aware of personally but I think it's fine they use them for video reference.
>>34 >>36
it's a whole different issue. Video reference is still animating, but roto is for sure just cheating.
On video reference, the animator is combining his artistic sense with the footage just like a realism painter combines his knowledge with that of a photo reference.
It still needs lots of skills.

I don't think they rotoscope the drumming in Apollon. The piano is most probably rotoscope'd, though.
>>The piano is most probably rotoscope'd, though.
The piano playing is very clearly CG.
I don't know what the practicality of rotoscoping CG over live action footage would be, especially with something like hands playing piano, since they'd mainly be shot side on. Misjudging depth is a problem in a situation like that. I've thought about it a lot since the show began and I can't figure out any kind of short cut. No matter how you approach it, it would be difficult.
I suppose being CG, they could rotoscope it from multiple angles? Have two or three cameras set up around a keyboard, definitely one from above, and then have that video be played out on flat planes in the CG for the animator to work with. Still sounds like a painful amount of work though. However, they could also have the added bonus of the keyboard's MIDI output actually animating the piano keys in CG.
I don't think they would do this, but it makes me wonder whether you could do precise enough motion capture to record the movements of individual fingers while playing. And then just lower the framerate.

Nishigori is good, but considering Idolm@ster's success as far as sales are concerned he is getting a new show with or without Aniplex's help. Umetsu, on the other hand, probably had a harder time getting the funding. I would have liked either, but I'm glad for Umetsu.

That's a damn sweet transformation sequence. Did they finally bring the big guns to the show? Been somewhat disappointed with the general AD and some other things for the first couple of episodes. (And Smile Precure was tumbling over the place with few hand-to-hand fighting either.)
Either way, the best thing about the show, visually, is the effects. They actually draw some pretty damn good wind/water/fire. Smile also has some pretty good effects, now that I think about it.
I feel bad for the people working on that movie; the movie itself looks badass as hell, but the association with the mediocre TV show is killing all of its chances at success.

There were a lot of parts that had that Kim Se Jun style, especially a lot of the effects, but this scene in particular was very cool looking.
It's a kid's show, no doubt about it, but it in other ways I feel it's surprisingly mature. Killer soundtrack from the 2nd gen onwards. The Fardain arc is a bit of a dud, but overall I've found it quite enjoyable.

Generally its more miss than a hit, there are good parts to it but the first couple of episodes are kinda rough to get through. If you've seen several Gundam shows then you can probably smell half the plot points a mile away. Animation wise, it's not always stellar, but the Mecha is always the strong point of it. I appreciate that but they haven't done any variety of genres in the past few years. Nichijou was the one of the best thing they made. Even though it bombed.
Hyouka even though with their top notch quality, seems to be having an uninteresting storyboarding in most times.
>>164
>they haven't done any variety of genres in the past few years.
That's really not true though. Hyouka, Nichijou and K-On! (their three most recent shows) aren't all that much alike beyond the general setting. Hyouka's a mystery/drama, K-On!'s a sitcom with 'healing' elements and Nichijou is an over-the-top gag absurd comedy. Their similarities are all very superficial.

That I can live with - with the way the tumblr system works, liking or relogging something just means a person likes it, and liking something doesn't necessarily mean it's the best.
Kazuhiro Takamura is from the Anno/Eva era from Gainax, though he was still an inbetweener around that time. Still, he formed many friendships there with the likes of Anno, Imaishi, Sadamoto, Tsurumaki, Mizushima Seiji. I'm not sure how many times it was explained, but
many of the instrument scenes were not completely rotoscoped, and some of them are total animation.
It was mainly a mix of both animation and rotoscope and sometimes (depends on the skills of the animator) they just used the live-action footage only as reference.
Nobutaka Ito's animation in episode 7 as example was animated.
(the footage was probably used as reference)
He was responsible for Sentaro's animation in this scene http://youtu.be/jRHJntLYMh0?t=57s
He tweeted it when duckroll asked, but then he deleted his tweets. Maybe he didn't want the "lazy animators" to look back next to Nobutake Ito and whoever else didn't rotoscope?

AIR was pretty consistent though there'd be a couple of off model problems in some episodes. Haruhi had of lot of that problems. This week's Omega was pretty decent. The show overall looks consistent for a Toei production, but the action isn't particularly exciting since it tries too hard to look on-model. This week had some actual martial arts stuff in it, though. And some cool special effects stuff. No episode 10 level but decent. Baba, Nishii, Morita Takashi and Morimune were involved. I'm guessing Morimune animated the stand-out, the 4-character fighting scene near the ending.
first episode of Binbougami looked....great actually. I was surprised, there was loads of interesting FX animation flying around.
Natsuyuki Rendezvous #1 was okay, the only real stand out scene to me was when the love interest started crying while eating ramen. I was expecting a bit more from Kou Matsuo, even Ryo-timo's OP is just alright

Little by little, Disappearance is really getting dwarfed in terms of overall visuals. When I rewatched Disappearance then watched Hyouka, Disappearance seemed outdated.

From what I've read of many anime directors and creators, many are unhappy with the moe boom, but much of it is out of their hands. That is why many animators, the top level ones, only ever work on all those various original movies - or TV shows that they know are backed by one of their close pals, like on Dennou Coil.

I should say in terms of animation quality, at the very least it comes up in animation threads. Always defensive and apologetic about "cheap" Japanese animation throwing out the canned responses of "American animation has bigger budgets" and typically thinking that framerate is the end all be all of animation, this is what I see in these threads anyway.
Shida Cure, Yoshinari Days, Shikama Art Online, Muraki Circus, Kazuto no Basket, Kim's AGE.
July was a wonderful month. I especially liked Precure with the Toei's full power.
Joshiraku in general has had some pretty cool animation across the board. It's not GREAAAT stuff but still its quite fun. Mizushima sure knows how to make use of a staff
I'm not sure if you are joking about that, but I think you have mentioned a different person.
We are talking here about the animator Nekomataya (ねこまたや, with the twitter account http://twitter.com/info_nekomataya), and you are referring to an artist that is more known by the name of Naomi Nekomata (ねこまたなおみ, with twitter account http://twitter.com/nekomata), even if the address of the website 'NekomataShop' (http://nekomataya.net/) and the circle name of Nekomata-ya confused people at first.
Sid vs. Gundam Legilis & Dark Hound and Sid vs. Gundam AGE-2 battles were pretty awesome this week, even though Sid is CG.
The final battle starts next week, so the remaining episodes should have some nice fight animation in them.

It took an entire summer, as well as $100 worth of Blockbuster-fees; but I did it… I searched through the lower rung of cheap horror movies at my local rental-store. 85% of the films lived up to their cheap cover-art, lackluster casts, and un-appealing synopses. They were dead-fish. Rotten movies that only inspired a sense of resentment for picking one box instead of the next. A few, however, stood out.
When you rent every horror film available: you sift through the shit and find those little diamonds that were almost thrown out. These are the diamonds you cannot throw out.
5. Blood Car
Set in the near future, this film has an odd approach to explaining our apocalyptic fate: gas prices! In fact, cars are obsolete in this story. Archie Andrews (played by Mike Brune) is a vegan who aspires to inventing an engine that runs on vegan smoothies. And it’s not working-out. The engine only roars to life after Archie accidentally cuts his hand and bleeds on it. Soon enough, the hippie naturalist who once hated the killing of any living being, is lured-in by the prospect of being the only one in town to have a running car. Now, anyone and anything filled with blood, becomes a possible fuel-source.
Listing this films nominations, wins, and nods would be impossible in this short article. The entire budget for the film was $125,000. And yes, it is evident in the fact that the film is grainy, the sound isn’t perfect and Anna Chlumsky (“My Girl”; “My Girl 2”) is the only actor you’ll recognize. Still, the story is wonderful enough to earn a spot on this list. By far, an underrated movie.
Based on a true story, ‘Black Cadillac’ tells the story of four teenage boys who go out to a bar in the country to drink while underage and score some lonely girls stuck in a small town. A fight in the bar forces them to head back home prematurely. A hundred mile drive back to the city doesn’t seem that bad at first, but they’re being followed by a mysterious black Cadillac. Whoever—or whatever—is driving the Cadillac seems hell-bent on terrorizing the already frightened boys. After hours of taunting by the unknown car, the boys face facts and admit that they might never make it back home.
Honestly? The synopsis didn’t intrigue me either. The only reason I agreed to rent it, was the fact that the movie’s logo was a great design: ‘Black Cadillac’ in broad letters, formed into the chrome logo that was on the classic Caddies. After watching the film once, I immediately went back and watched again. Then I watched it with the director’s commentary. Listening to the director re-live everything that happened on the night that inspired the story, added a new dimension to the film. The actors in the film were low-key as well—nobody too famous, but good actors. This helped develop the characters well—you have an instant relationship with every character introduced. Randy Quaid (‘Vacation;’ ‘Independence Day’) is, however, a recognizable face, and plays a character he was born to play: creepy local sheriff. Don’t go the rest of your life without seeing this movie… Like other films on this list, you can find it for a bargain-price.
A newlywed couple goes house-hunting with their trusty realtor, played by John Ritter (“Three’s Company”; “IT”). Problem? Every house shown by their nervous agent has a tawdry and murderous past, needing to be explained in-detail before the buyers can make their decision.
My girlfriend and I rented this movie for one reason only: John Ritter. He had just passed away, so seeing this movie on the shelf made us want to find out what the hell it was all about. Unknowingly, we stumbled onto one of the greatest horror-comedies ever made. It was the perfect balance of horror and comedy. Both mine and my girlfriend’s families were big in the real estate business at the time; so, of course, we loved the idea of a realtor that only had ‘haunted houses’ to show his clients.
When it comes to famous faces, this movie will take you by surprise… A low-budget, fun movie with appearances by actors and actresses that make you ask, “Hey, what other movies were they in?”A decade after first seeing it, I am still looking for any extra copies of the original release. Trust me… If you see it in your movies store, or in the bargain-bin—don’t pass it up.
Hippies Beware! It’s the biggest outdoor concert of the year—a festival of peace and love. What could go wrong? Well… A homicidal maniac who thinks he’s Ronald Reagan could show up, bent on slaughtering all those filthy hippies.
From writer/director/actor/famous family/husband of Courtney Cox (David Arquette), comes this gem. Starring David Arquette, Courtney Cox, Jason Mewes, Balthazar Getty, and more: this film was David Arquettes subtly-political commentary on the state of our country. Drugs, hippies, the government, concert-promoters, and animal-rights activists; all are fair-game in Arquette’s satirical story. And really? Why wouldn’t you want to watch a b-movie that has an axe-wielding Ronald Reagan as the villain?
Upon seeing the cover of this film, I was worried… “What is this? SyFy Channel’s version of 28 weeks later?” I commented to myself. Thankfully, this presumption didn’t deter me from renting this movie.
First lines of the movie were, again, overused and bland: rules for surviving the post-apocalyptic world where disease has devastated mankind, teenage survivors learning how to cope with the new world… Even the cast-members kept me uneasy: Chris Pine (Star Trek [2009]) in the lead? Either this guy agreed to make a terrible movie at the height of his success, or this movie will hit a note. Honestly? I think he made the perfect decision. Though the movies starts slow, the plot, climax and ending made the movie.
I still can’t tell if this is a true-horror film, or a drama with horror-overtones, but the bottom line is: I actually cried at the end of the film. As a writer, my job is to create characters and put them into horrible situations; hoping that readers will grow an emotional connection to those characters. Then, I am supposed to torment them. This movie sucked me in and enamored me—I felt the characters and felt their pain.
Though this movie is fairly-hard to find; it shouldn’t be in the bargain-bin… This is an artistic piece that should be remembered and enjoyed by everyone.
I sifted through all the marked-down movies, the throw-aways, the bombs, the rotten tomatoes… Of all the bad scripts, worse actors and lacking budgets, these are the best. Rent them, purchase them, over-borrow them from your roommate—I don’t care. But watch them.
