it's a whole different issue. Video reference is still animating, but roto is for sure just cheating.
On video reference, the animator is combining his artistic sense with the footage just like a realism painter combines his knowledge with that of a photo reference.
It still needs lots of skills.

I don't think they rotoscope the drumming in Apollon. The piano is most probably rotoscope'd, though.
>>The piano is most probably rotoscope'd, though.
The piano playing is very clearly CG.
I don't know what the practicality of rotoscoping CG over live action footage would be, especially with something like hands playing piano, since they'd mainly be shot side on. Misjudging depth is a problem in a situation like that. I've thought about it a lot since the show began and I can't figure out any kind of short cut. No matter how you approach it, it would be difficult.
I suppose being CG, they could rotoscope it from multiple angles? Have two or three cameras set up around a keyboard, definitely one from above, and then have that video be played out on flat planes in the CG for the animator to work with. Still sounds like a painful amount of work though. However, they could also have the added bonus of the keyboard's MIDI output actually animating the piano keys in CG.
I don't think they would do this, but it makes me wonder whether you could do precise enough motion capture to record the movements of individual fingers while playing. And then just lower the framerate.

the latest One Piece 547 was nice. especially the B part.

It's two months old, everybody's already long over it...

Too bad, seeing that it was Aniplex and all I was sure that it'll be another A-1 show with Nishigori at helm. Idolm@ster was surprisingly fun and well made, wouldn't mind a show of similar quality again regardless of cute girls and all.

>Too bad
wait what? An Umetsu anime would be fucking amazing right now
Nishigori is good, but considering Idolm@ster's success as far as sales are concerned he is getting a new show with or without Aniplex's help. Umetsu, on the other hand, probably had a harder time getting the funding. I would have liked either, but I'm glad for Umetsu.

You remember the last show(s) he directed? I do. Can't say I'm happy with him reusing the same ideas for op/ed animations for the past few years either.

That's a damn sweet transformation sequence. Did they finally bring the big guns to the show? Been somewhat disappointed with the general AD and some other things for the first couple of episodes. (And Smile Precure was tumbling over the place with few hand-to-hand fighting either.)
Either way, the best thing about the show, visually, is the effects. They actually draw some pretty damn good wind/water/fire. Smile also has some pretty good effects, now that I think about it.
