Questions to people learning Japanese

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-14 22:12 ID:RW/JC4ez

1. Who are you? (Age, sex, location and everything else you are willing to tell us)
2. Why are you learning Japanese.

I'm asking this because I want to know if the people who are trying (notice the word 'trying') to learn Japanese are just a bunch of weeaboo faggots, or if they have a more sane reason to do so.

GTFO. Seriously. If you don't wanna act superior and lord other people's mistakes over them, wtf are you on 4chan?

>>17
try Rikai's website. It is superior to rikaichan.

I'm a programmer, and as of late, I've been getting involved with game programming. Seeing as a large portion of the industry is Japan based, I figured it could expand my job market (should things go well for me). Complimenting this, I've always enjoyed learning language (whether it be improving my own, or attempting proficiency in another), and I've found Japanese to be quite interesting (likely due to the vast gap between its roots and that of germanic/latin-base languages). Some tell me this is unrealistic, but it's been working quite well for me so far.

Weeaboos just piss me off. I feel like strangling people when they tell me they're trying to learn "so they can read manga and watch anime before it's subbed"; or the like. Their 'trying' usually consists of parroting phrases from their favorite characters, which makes it all the more idiotic. Real people don't talk like anime characters anyway.

I don't agree with you. Some of these people went on to become anime translators as well, and I'm one of them. If you think we don't read grammar books like everyone else, you are wrong. Some of us do.

On the other hand, I am always pissed that people who claim that they are learning a language for jobs frequently restrict their knowledge to the textbook, and refuse to learn anything outside the classroom, or the "holy text" they have. As such their Japanese knowledge is always limited and their foundations are weak.

>>43
Well, I apologize if the stereotype doesn't fit you, but you must admit it does fit the majority.

Yes, I know what you mean. I do a good amount of my learning not with a textbook, but by conversing with Japanese friends of mine. I find that often helps me more than a textbook could. Of course, textbooks have their uses, as well...

>>44
Unfortunately, I must admit it does, and I want to kill them as much as those idiots who stare at me with disapproval when I say some vocab that doesn't come from the textbook.

23/m/some place I hate

physically fit, good at some sports, not repulsive to the opposite sex.

My reasons for learning Japanese:
-when I was younger i was practicing martial arts and exposed to the language that way
-one of my uncle's taught me some japanese when I was a kid, i liked it
-I actually love the language and think it's beautiful.
-Japanese girls are cute
-Having been to Japan once before, I can say I'd really like to return, and I'd like to be fluent enough to have a good time.

Sure I like anime, but I don't obsess over it like so many other people.  It's a nice way to kill time when there aren't more important things to do.

If someone gets into the language and they're a real weeaboo, it doesn't matter in the long run. If they're going to really learn the language/go to Japan they're going to HAVE to learn how to respect the culture.

If you're one of the few weeaboos who gets really fluent at the language, great- I hope you have a good time in Akihabara. Though frankly, I think anyone would appreciate their time there even more if they tried to make contacts with the locals and explored more rural areas.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-22 13:56 ID:mqc8XVNj

>>47
People who get fluent at the language will learn many uses for it, of course. And their interest would not be restricted to akihabara anymore.

Being a weeaboo and having interest in their culture is never mutually exclusive.

Well I'm learning it b/c as long as I can remember I have been interested in it. I like learning about languages and cultures, currently I am trying to learn Spanish. Japan is such a fascinating place to me so unlike any other I think. Learning languages I beleive helps you to understand the culture with the words they use. I'm a female and am 18 who resides in the u.s. :)

OP here, I must say you win the thread so far. Everyone here just comes up with the lamest reasons to learn it, just as I expected. I'm hoping to become a physicist one day (sure, laugh at me all you want), so it might be usefull to me one day in therms of getting a better job (I heard you can earn more in the US or Japan then in Europe).
I don't really like Japan or it's culture more then any other country and I've never been there. I find it strange that so many people have this strange obsession with Japan while most of them haven't been to there nor met a Japanese person. I even know a guy who hopes to learn Japanese by watching every episode of Naruto 5 fucking times.
>>49
How's that STD going, Emily?

>>50
Do come back again when you've gained certain proficiency at the language. So far the only people who laughed at others not learning the language to make money, are the people who haven't started at all.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-23 15:22 ID:O563uoyE

>>51
The reason most people like me laugh isn't because they learn Japanese, it is because of their motivation to do so. 99% Wants to learn it because they've seen some shitty anime or fap to Japanese porn. You don't need any knowledge of Japanese to find that funny.
The people who laugh about it don't have that twisted obsession and that's why they never started learning the language. Fact is that unless you're a complete weeaboo, it's very unlikely that you'll ever need Japanese. You're probebly better of learning Mandarin or something, since that could be very usefull in the future.

Is anyone other than >>46 learning the language because they actually think it's beautiful and enjoy speaking it?

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-23 19:44 ID:4zNTZJQL

Does any one else feel cursed because of english being their 1st and only language they know fluently?
>>50
and WHAT? You know you make me feel like a weeaboo
>>53
Honestly, I don't think Japanese sounds beautiful, I'd say along the lines of cool...

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-23 19:45 ID:v318wCIS

>>53
I do (>>22 here), but in my experience, that alone is not enough to actually learn a language. A few years back, I picked up Hungarian for I thought it sounded very beautiful and had quite interesting grammatical features, but eventually gave it up within 6 months as I had almost nothing to listen to nor anybody to speak with outside class. Earlier than that, I'd tried to teach myself Norwegian for similar reasons and failed to make any progress.

>>52
I predict that you will drop out pretty quick. Since you're no weeaboo, you'll never need Japanese, will you? Why bother learn it then? That's what you will be asking yourself when you hit the first stumbling block.

Frankly, your argument isn't getting anywhere. Obviously you're saying that anything not related to making money or improving social status isn't worth learning at all.

There are people in this world who learn things just for the interest and passion and you're not one of them, and you'll never try to understand. Period.

2. Learning Japanese for potential future studying there. I herd sum things about them having awesome technological faggotry. And since I'll probably end up doing a nerdy job, I might as well learn from the pros.

I heard Norwegian and Danish are the same language, or that there are two languages spoken in Norway and one of them is based on Danish. Is this true?

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-26 5:20 ID:jw2B2vFM

>>67
I know they speak Nynorsk and Bokmal, and that both are very close to Danish and Swedish. Now, if one of them is closer, I'd also like to know.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-26 5:35 ID:jw2B2vFM

>>67
I just came back from Wikipedia and it looks like Bokmal is spoken by 90% of the Norwegian people and it's largely based on Danish.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-26 5:41 ID:zjsMdhO3

>>68

Bokmål is more common, and I guess it's closer to both Swedish and Danish than Nynorsk is.

Norwegian is close to Danish in writing, but the pronunciation is more like Swedish.

I'm a 22 year-old female living in southern Indiana.

I started taking Japanese because I have a third shift job with a lot of down time and I needed a hobby.  I chose that particular language because there's a Japanese family that lives across the street from me and they pay me to help their kids with their homework a few hours a week.  I figured that would give me a chance to practice it.

They're still going extinct.

Heh.

Good thing, I would be pissed if I learned a language that was hard as hell, and never apply it in real life..
