Anyone have one, or going for a degree in physics? I'm thinking about making it my major, although I have very little background on physics itself, though I've got the math background (I hope XD).
How is it? Like I said, my experience with physics is very minimal, but the topics that it covers is very intriguing to me.
Physics is almost entirely calculus + geometry.
Stat mech involves a little counting/combinatorics.
Quantum involves a little linear algebra.
Grad quantum/QFT touches a little group theory.

Could you give an example of a QFT problem? You don't have to explain any of it if you don't want, just give the easiest thing you can think of.

I'll have my BS in May.
Physics, eh, it has ups and downs. Enjoy being single, brah.

Physics requires huge capital investment for proper research.
If you like career in physics it would be likely a corporate research, without much autonomy.
Unless you're owning a lab or have enough capital Physics research is not for you.

Thanks for the input. What about biology? I'm definitely interested in that as well.
And why do you HAVE to be single with a degree in physics? wtf is that shit...

Go on...do you enjoy it (well I'm sure you do, obviously ><)? Did you know right away that you wanted to major in physics?

If you have to ask, then go with biology instead. If you can't see that physics and mathematics are the pinnacle sciences and the only subjects worth shunning human contact for, then your puny mind would be better off using minimal statistics and calculus, and you'd be better off partying, having sex, whatever the fuck you bros do.

Well don't insult me. I'm just curious about the physics nerd shit stereotype.
Why do you have to "shun human contact" in order to study physics? I don't know how much greater the workload is in college, but a major is a fucking major...why should anyone care? You still have free time regardless.

Because some majors require more work than other majors.

Because only two types of people study physics: geniuses and kids who think they're geniuses because they were in AP classes. If you can't handle the high degree of thermal entropy then get out of the kitchen.
Im a Britfag so had to choose before I started Uni and am currently doing my PhD so its safe to say I enjoy it. ^_^
Honestly though I was never the kind of person who always thought thats the way they would go. Don't get me wrong I always enjoyed science but it wasnt until a year or two before Uni that I properly decided that it was the route I wanted to take (Note 2 years before Uni over here you only do two subjects). What I also found was that the more indepth and the further I got into my course the more I enjoyed it.
If you like understanding how things work and delving the mysteries of the universe then Physics is very much for you. I'm not going to lie it is alot of hard work espcially if you want to do well and in the final year you can kiss your social life goodbye but then if you enjoy it theres not much of a choice.
With the exception of the final year I did have and do have a decent social life going. You will meet people on your course that just shove themselves in a closet and work all the time, heck some of my mates do/did, but you will also meet some regs and some of the nicest people about. Physics really does tend to attract a really wide variety of people.
When it comes down to it, do what you enjoy. I don't think there are any subjects that I know where people have been completely unable to have any social life what so ever and that includes Medics who have to work a fuckton.

In the first year you'll probably have more math than physics and later you won't get away from it either so you should have some confidence in your math skills.
On a related note: What are the good universities for physics in the USA and Canada?

For some reason I really want to strangle you. Perhaps it is because you put so much value on socialization. Yes, that is precisely why.
What's wrong with having a life outside of your course or do you refer more to people who simply like to cruise through or try to slack their way through their degree.
If so please do not confuse me for one of those types of people, as honestly speaking with the exception of the first year I worked my arse off the entirety of my course. I simply believe that when you have the time you should actually try to have some time away from the subject though that becomes impossible later.
Physics is no shape way or form a subject people should take unless you are genuine interest and passion about it.

So I'm thinking of a double major in physics (focus on astronomy/astrophysics) and aerospace engineering. I find physics very interesting but at the same time I'd like to do practical things instead of researching all the time, and engineering looks rewarding, so I'm all for that.
Is this suicide?

worth it, but i can't say how much physics will help you other than the basic stuff you'll need for aero.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. When I go out with my friends and we start hitting on chicks, I have the greatest trump card ever.
Girl: So, what do you guys do for a living?
My friends: Oh, I'm a (some lame boring shit).
Me: I'm an Astronomer.
Girl: Really? So if I point to a star you could tell me what it is?
Me(Even though we fucking do more than that...): Of course I can! Why don't we go outside and I can show you where all the constellations are.
Girl: Oh my god! Please Let me suck your dick!
True story.

If you think studying physics means you have to be a recluse, then chances are you're a recluse in the first place.
I'm an Astrophysics major, i've had a girlfriend for 3 years, and have a wonderful social life. Sometimes i have to give up the occasional drinking session or party to go study for an exam or something, but otherwise i have plenty of social time.
And like someone before said, girls find hard-science majors fucking sexy as hell. It's a sign of thoughtfulness and intelligence, even if dumbasses like >>6 think it means they have to martyr themselves for their subject.
But >>6 is just letting his own ego get to him, he's so fucking smart and intelligent that he's BETTER than us for shunning a social life. OH BOY WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT YOU AND YOUR DEDICATION?!?! God, go fuck yourself. Be a normal human being, go out and try to have fun or something. There's more to life than science, believe it or not.

In the name of differential equations, we must martyr ourselves! Go go go!
It's the fucks like you that shit all over science. True scientists are anything but normal. You'd rather go out drinking than be alone with your own thoughts? Do that, then. Don't annoy the intelligent people with your drivel.
Don't you want a wife and little kids calling you daddy someday? Unless you're cool with getting a mail order bride, you have to go outside to find one man.

Not >>34, but fuck no I don't want kids. If I need companionship, cats are cuter, better behaved, fuck your shit up less, and are a crapload cheaper and easier to take care of.
Not terribly keen on the "wife" thing either. I can hardly stand being around the same person for a few hours, much less the rest of my life.

I don't adhere to the standard biological rhythm that tells me I need to fuck a vagina and marry one before I die. Enjoy that, simpleton.
