Christianity is the worst religion for civilization, since redemption is dependent upon faith, rather than good works, and a lifetime of wickedness can be redeemed by a death-bed conversion.

Religion itself is the worst religion. Religion itself is iconic FAIL. The religitards have to FIRST BRING ANY EVIDENCE whatsoever to the table, before ever being allowed to speak on the topic.

>>12 Present this IRREFUTABLE PROOF. I have IRREFUTABLE PROOF that Humans launched space rockets. Go to fucking Florida and see the launches for yourself. That proves that proof can be stored somewhere where a person can check it out for themselves. So, where did Joseph Smith keep his IRREFUTABLE PROOF? Hint: He didn't keep it anywhere, since it DIDN'T FUCKING EXIST. Smith was just another RELIGITARD who couldn't prove his demented religious fuckheadedness.

Theology is a philosophical study, not Science. It's basically otherwise smart people talking about nonsensical bullshit and trying to make sense of it. There is no experimentation, prediction, falsifiability, etc. The fact that you don't know the difference proves that you don't know SHIT about Science OR Theology.
Actually, for proof to exist, one would actually have to reveal evidence of the happening, or be present at the exact time of activity. Any reporting, texting, images or the like are mere folk tales until true research is done. Yes, that means get out from behind the damned computer and do some research...outside of your bedroom...no, outside of your house...ok, just forget about it, jeez.
Christianity isn't alone in this. See pure land Buddhism for instance. Also, with so many doctrines that can (de)emphasized by whomever is running the church or group or commune or whatever the fuck, you'd have to evaluate every single group on its own merits.
OR you could forget about this shit and go back to SCIENCE!

Oh my GOD! You guys are dense as all hell! You think that Christianity or Catholicism is to blame for the atrocities? No, those are just ideas, ideas (inanimate and intangible) don't kill tangible and animate human beings, people kill people! Take on someone else's idea as your own is at your own peril from that misinterpretation of the basic human conditions come out and destroys the non-believers. The sad state of the human condition is that we don't want to see the simple truths, only the perceived truths that are complex lies with a little bit of truth. It is my firm belief that if we understand this about ourselves we will understand this about other people and thus will gain a greater appreciation and compassion of the relative flexibilities of human nature. This is the basis of my faith. So that it remains flexible, maintains the ability for change and alteration toward communication and cooperation, to perform tasks that include the facilitation of taking care of our physiological needs along with our want of transcendence. Transcendence will not exist until we perform the deeds based from the understandings of what the ego is to us as humans. Human thought is potential, memories are of the tangible past within an intangible framework, the future is potential the present moment the only part that is observable everything else remains as conjecture and speculation from every person's point of view. It will only be true to the person who observes directly. The same goes for belief and faith. You can't fight ignorance you will only end up just as smart. In order to teach one must be willing to learn and be empty of all knowledge. Every instance is seperate, later through imagination, rationalization, reasoning and science we can begin to understand that everything is interconnected and coallesce with each other. There can be no faith without consequence; there can be no science without belief. They are two sides of the same coin, sacrifice one for the other and loose the coin; take advantage of both and take the coin as your own. Profits and Gains, little by little, communication and cooperation, Point of Origin with measurements and belief gets you the ability to progress or regress according to your faith. And everything within the whole of existence and intangibility supports any faith you wish as everything has the potential for anything given time and opportunity. Please, don't take me at my word, perform your experiments, and conjectures and imaginations and rationalizations, but utilize this as a point of reference and see how it applies. Whether it does or doesn't or is completely fruitless will only work to support your faith and your thirst for scientific discovery from observation. Thank you again for your time.
Discussing the battle against a Muslim warlord in Somalia, [ Lt. Gen. William G. "Jerry" Boykin, the new deputy undersecretary of Defense for intelligence] told another audience, "I knew my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol."
"We in the army of God, in the house of God, kingdom of God have been raised for such a time as this," Boykin said last year.
On at least one occasion, in Sandy, Ore., in June, Boykin said of President Bush: "He's in the White House because God put him there."

The problem of all this religifaggotry is that it will NOT all be over soon. The world is descending into even MOAR religious foolishness. Morons like you are using the Internet to spread more disinformation and stupidity about that wholly disproven thing called "religion". The franchise of rationality is NOT expanding. It's contracting, and will lead the world into a new Dark Ages.
The more foolish we become the more foolish our actions the more foolishly, expediantly, geometrically, and exponentially we perish in the flashfire of flying time. This WILL BE OVER SOON, I would say December 21, 2012, my birthday, and the last day on the Mayan calendar. I would venture a guess at a global-ecological war over every idea ever thought and we won't stop until we destroy the very ground we live and thrive upon. We are doomed, that's only about 3 1/2 years away what can we possibly achieve in 3 1/2 years time so we will be able to surpass our own levels of stupidity and promote longevity of our planet and peoples? Nothing, so just keep on sitting behind the computer screens and watch the world come to a firey briney end. ps. I'll see you all in the afterlife. Of course, we'll destroy that too if we get a chance.

The problem isn't so much the ideologies themselves, but the fact that people can abuse them easily. It is much harder to commit most of the atrocities attributed to religion, communism, "human rights", etc in the absence of some sort of ideological framework.
Flexibility is important, but is antithetical to fundamentalism.

Correct. The Mayan calendar doesn't "end" in 2012. It just begins a new major era ("b'ak'tun") in their system, the Long Count.

Christianity and America are two evils that go hand-in-hand.
I'm not refusing to see any truth. I believe God exists I just don't believe in that "Jesus died for our sins and saved us" story. People went to heaven or hell before Jesus and go to heaven or hell after Jesus, he did nothing other then steal parts of Judaism and Buddhism to create his own religion.
>>39
Where's the evidence for the existence of this "god" that you claim? Furthermore, where's the evidence for the existence of these "heaven" and "hell" places?
>>41
Since the advent of structured scientific inquiry combined with a high technology required to enact its methods, the evidence for atoms became quickly conclusive. Where was ALL rational and reasoned discourse 1000 years ago? That's right, it was mired in religious fucking NONSENSE.
This "god" has been claimed for millennia, and I'm being generous since there have been multiple incarnations of this thing so it's a bit specious to claim singularity. In all those thousands of years, where's the fucking EVIDENCE? There's NONE. You know a thing that's searched for, over thousands of years and various investigatory ecologies? They call it "DOESN'T FUCKING EXIST", chum. The ultimate investigator, science, hasn't found this "god" and given the alleged characteristics of this "god", science should have found it. Hence it just doesn't fucking exist.
WAKE UP.
P.S. Once again, if anyone's going to make any claims for the existence for this "god", "heaven" and "hell", then they could have ONLY detected these things, right? Why make a claim for something existing when you have no evidence for it? So, I'm STILL WAITING for the evidence to back up >>39's claims. Put up the evidence, chum!
What would be evidence to you that something Divine is real? If it appeared specially in front of you and gave you a million dollars? You are so selfish.

Don't you have high standards... Democritus claimed the existence of atoms more than a thousand years before their discovery. Where was the evidence in all that time? That's right, 0. "DOESN'T FUCKING EXIST"? A bit early to conclude that, I'd say.
Turns out atoms aren't really indivisible units of matter after all. Yay for protons, neutrons, and electrons! Oh crap, protons and neutrons are made of up and down quarks. Similarly, we can't conclude that strings don't exist because it might take another 1000 years to discover evidence for strings. Of course, in the absence of evidence, it is also too early to claim their existence.
My answer is, we simply don't know.

Although it opposed gays and other religions, the only thing Christianity requires for salvation is believing that Jesus was the son of God who died on the cross you your (and everyone's) sins. Everything else is just "getting closer to God" and additional self changes to get on better grounds with God. And although it teaches spreading the religion, most people are ham-handed and bluntly force the religion on people, which wont work. B^U

Christianity is about kissing up to a person they're convinced is the supreme God and Judge.
My faith holds that everything that can be discovered already exists awaiting discovery, therefore everything that gets discovered is already part of God's plan and thus my faith simply gets consistently re-inforced and less-wrong through discovery. So, basically, in laemenn's terms:
echo on
:X
If exist X where X=(ANY|EVERY)THING then "GOD" else "OBLIVION"
:"OBLIVION"
If exist "OBLIVION" where "OBLIVION" = "COMPLETE DISSOCIATION" then "GOD" else "POTENTIAL"
:"POTENTIAL"
if exist "POTENTIAL" where "POTENTIAL" = X then "GOD" goto end
:end
From this, everything that has motion and is observable|sensable or has the potential as such, even as of yet unseen, it exists.
My faith also states one more facet that will not be of interest. (Any|Every)Thing supports (Any|Every) Faith(less) religion; therefore, (every|no)body is (right|wrong). Life = Paradox, hypothesis = Axiom. (Lies|Truths) = Perception where Transmitter = Lie;Perceiver = Truth;Perceiver + Axiom = (Transmitter = Truth{previously Lie}) = Paradox :) See, no matter what, we create the world we live in. :P

Look the word faith up in a dictionary.
Name:
Mr. Faithful2008-05-16 1:15
Yup, my faith isn't based upon proof, it's re-inforced by it. My faith was derived from my own flexibile understandings, :P*. Flexible because all creation is flexible and influenced by the course of change whether it's for the best or worst of either oppossing elements. So, all my job is to do is to consistently re-inforce my faith by challenging my faith (putting it to the test) and guess what? Everytime I do it's consistently re-inforced, re-affirmed, and re-constituted. How do you think belief gets its' start? From within. :) Simply use your senses, wait for the opportunities and potentials, once you begin to see similarities and parodies you will begin to want to re-inforce your own faith because it feels good to have it and you want it to grow like a little tree or baby inside of you. If you understand what faith is from my perspective you will understand that the meaning can be molded to be acceptable or not. Thusly, everything in life is a re-inforcement of faith no matter the position. Secondly, everything that doesn't exist already exists in its natural state, but has yet to be uncovered. Take for instance laws made by the hand of man. They go completely against the laws of nature. Everything is privilege including birth and death, the only right is the right of survival by any means necessary. Please, anyone, if you wish to challenge my faith, be my guest, offer me anything you wish, text-book definitions, history, science, math, poetry, you name it, I'll turn it to my advantage. So, remember kids, keep your friends close and keep your enemies closer. For how much closer could a true enemy be then inside your very skull, behind the glazed-over cow-toed eyes of zombie-minded blind-acceptance. Faith isn't blind, justice is blind. But don't take me at my word, look for yourself. Faith is about believing then seeing. Hence, the quarter trick. Believe in what thou whilt for thou art of all the image(s) of God. If you want blind faith, than take me at my final words. "BELIEF COMES FROM WITHIN, IT MUST COME FIRST, WITHOUT IT, ONLY DUST REMAINS."

All you require are within these words, can you read words? Ah...I see you can. Good. Now, how about listening to a person talk until you finally begin to see a change in your own perspective. Ah, but you don't want anything like that, am I right? No, you don't want to see from another person's point of view, you want others to see from your point of view. *pffhshihshih* :P*
Of course you are right, no such BEING exists such as God...oh wait...you keep asking for proof of him, but you are already saying he's there when you ask for evidence of him...*pffhshihshih* :P*

Christianity is, in general, as evil or stupid as the person following it. You can do terrible things in the name of both Atheism and Christianity. The religious leader sends his people into battle because he thinks God commanded it, the Stalins and Maos of the world do the same because they see their people as nothing more than meaty fuel to be ground up to feed the machinery of The State. In both cases, the people are equally dead.
Atheists, you can despise a Falwell or the gay funeral protesting guy, but you've known Christians who did it right. Famous ones like Martin Luther King Jr., or just common ones you've run across who seem to have an inexaustible well of generosity and good cheer. You know how many charities have crosses on their logo.
And as far as replying to the original topic, and whether it is or is not a good religion for civilization, I'd say it's a good religion for the initial fostering of a civilization, and after a point it must be discarded. [Woo, run-on sentences]
It provides a social structure and order that's good for the strength of a group of people.

I tend to agree with your statements except the final one about discarding. It's a point that many people miss, any religion is meant to be as flexible, changable, adaptable, unifiable as the peoples and times that currently inhabit the planet. If it's not, than only prolonged death remains. You can observe it anywhere, shoot, even Scientology is no exception to that rule. If you put yourself in the shoes of a business man and see a business just sitting there, would you invest in it? No. Why? No profits and gains. But, if you spruce it up, change a few things, adapt it to the people or community (via location) to suit them, to make it personal for them, then and only then does it make sense to continue on with the service, and that's really what religion is, it's a civil service meant to inspire hope and to initiate, unify, integrate, communicate, cooperate, and define one simple beginning so we all have a point of origin. Cause as you know, those who do not know or care about their past, are doomed to repeat it. Then again, such is the human condition, sleep, work, eat, sex, repeat. C'mon, let's liven it up with a little religion, why not.
I hate science vs religion battles,

The only thing that I won't change my mind on is that I need and want both, so, both have to work for me. What would be a better faith than that? The faith of turning everything to your advantageous gain. THE END, GOOD BUY!
Americans and most Westerners don't know shit about Islam other than, "A guy named Muhammad made a bunch of stuff up, invaded the entire Arab peninsula, forced people to convert, and taught that you get 72 virgins."

Actually what is so wrong isn't the actual act of intercourse or molestation itself. What is wrong is the disrespectful act in and of itself performed upon an unaware creature such as a child or mentally handi-capable person. The person performing the act does not take into account the child's age nor relative state of awareness. It could be argued that it is because they actually do take into account both previously said that they do the act that they do. But realistically, it has a lot more to do with "getting the fix" of their own memories by reconstitution and completion of said deed. With that said, because they don't take this into account from a respectful POV and then perform such an act, they are in a sense disrespecting themselves just as they themselves were disrespected proving yet again, even humans can behave like animals being that our very genetics are built upon similar sets of growth, usage, and operational similarities. It is our differences of appearance, action, thoughts and a great many aspects that are to this day being discovered through communication and cooperation and respect (self-respect). And of course, leave it up to women to cum up with the best way to inspire the male human race to perform self-respectful actions through temptation of sexually rewarded privileges.

Ok in 2007 I was like you yes I'm young in wisdom but I understand and will defend God. I came too faith through Jesus at a very hurtful place in my life where Satan was trying to kill me but I didn't know it until the end. I even had a Demon in me this evil kept me feeling so bad that I wanted to kill-myself, the first time a christian prayed for me he prayed through Jesus "of course" and that evil left me strate away, but I didn't know it until afew days later,, its a feeling that I can't tell you you have too go through it your self.
Jesus, + Bible is very real. Now that I'm Christian and have been doing things for our Lord Jesus I have had 3 or 4 attacks from Satan my last one was 2 months ago and was the most believing for a nonchristian out of them all.
Hi All... well i can see here that you are all GREATLY CONFUSED... for starters Religion simply means a way of life... for me i follow Jesus Christ (Christ is a name that set him apart from all the other people called Jesus at that time... it simply means - Messiah or Anointed one) in regards to faith and grace. Yes Jesus died on the cross so that it wouldnt be by anything we did that would save us from eternal death (separation from God) but it would be by his love and MERCY that he would come down and become HUMAN to take our place. if that isnt amazing to you then i dont know what else to say other than JAMES 2:14-26
14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
20You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[d]? 21Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,"[e] and he was called God's friend. 24You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.
25In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
FAITH WITHOUT DEEDS IS DEAD.... Faith was explained to me in a great way... TRUST IN ACTION... if you dont follow the example of Christ's life and you call yourself a "christian" then you need to look at your life and start being serious and not just take on the "name" of Christianity... for it says in MATTHEW 7.21-23
21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
ALSO the simple fact that following Jesus means stepping out of your compfort zone and living the way he did... in MARK 8:34-38
34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever wants to save his life[c] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 37Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."
we must deny our sinful nature and stive to live like Jesus did... it is a Faith based "religion" however we must strive to live like Jesus and therefor Good "deeds" or "works" are a obvious consequence to that action..
I pray that you will all find Jesus like i did as he changed my life. It isnt easy i have to say... every day is a struggle in this world but i hold onto his Promise in 1 JOHN 2.25
"And he (Jesus) Himself has promised us this: eternal life"
Keep searching guys and you will find him... some good books are the case for Christ by lee strobel... look into it :)

Actually, oil is formed from algae/sunlight/hydrocarbons, being squashed and boiled for a few million years.
It's basically liquified sunlight.

Actually, all fossil fuels are the remnants of dead biological material like animals and plants...after they decompose and are trapped the biological material becomes black with decay...so, basically, if your mom were to have been trapped in a geo-pocket for a few centuries or so we would drill into that pocket, suck out her remains, refine her till she is highly combustible and put her to use in our automobiles so she can go to heaven as carbon dioxide which is poisoning the air we breathe...so, next time you see your mom, thank her for global warming for me.

Truly a remarkable man. Yeah, it took me a while to figure out what Jesus was really doing up there on that wooden stick dangling like a rag doll all torn to shreds like yesterday's newspaper.
1) If you are accused, take that accusation upon yourself and recover from it as you would for now and for all time; the expression of this will be made apparent to the accuser and he will turn away in shame and fear and in doing so will seek safety, escape, and hide to his own death OR he will see this as hope for his own salvation.
2) If you accuse, take upon yourself what you have accused and recover from it as you would for now and for all time; the expression of this will be made apparent to yourself and others as a sign that you can change yourself for the better as well so may they by their own choice.
3) If another is accused, say unto the accuser that you too have partaken in this misdeed and deserve equal repercussions. In this the accuser is given a choice to judge or forgive as well as yourself and the accused as you have also saved their face. The accused will see hope in this and may apply it in their own lives as well if that is their choice.
All of these things are possible, and they are the true teachings of Jesus Christ. It is a means by which to ACT WILLINGLY and BY CHOICE to provide CHOICE to the accuser, the accused, and the judged in order to better the practitioner.
Afterall, we are sinners mind you.

yeah, my point is, "it's pointless to make a point."
And I'm a liar and hypocrite, your belief is your choice; have a nice day.

oh, btw, Christianity isn't the worst religion.
The religion that supports ignorant mob mentality is the menace to progress in any civilization. Like the sands of the Colosseum.
Integrity, courage, bravery, honor, and interal-truth are by far the greatest virtues that mankind could have bestowed upon our awareness. Those that support ignorance as a choice should look at the original choice which ignorance supports, "to not be."
"To be or not to be; that is the question." -William Shakespeare
To be, to move, to survive, to mature, to reproduce, to evolve, to transcend, to ascend.
Btw, anyone ever wonder why we have "descendants" as opposed to "transcendants"? I've always wondered why our children are labeled as the ones falling deeper into an abyss or something...it's weird. What does /sci/ think?

Time progresses forward because there is a singularity at the end of time, and we are being pulled towards it.
