The problem isn't so much the ideologies themselves, but the fact that people can abuse them easily. It is much harder to commit most of the atrocities attributed to religion, communism, "human rights", etc in the absence of some sort of ideological framework.
Flexibility is important, but is antithetical to fundamentalism.
