`Anonymous' ran a script to get the usernames of people on Lolita City. It was a rather pathetic action given how much they bragged about it. The FBI took over all of Freedom Host, then injected every site it hosted with a JS exploit to phone home to their servers with the real IP address. Something actually effective.

Still, this is not going to end well. Potentially thousands of people looking only for a link to the Silk Road are going to end up in prison with sentences exceeding that for actual child rape. And taking down TorMail seems uncalled for.

Also interesting how they timed this to coincide with DEFCON. Maybe they were upset about being snubbed and decided to strike when the people most likely to notice (let's face it, most pedos are not that bright) were away.

I'd be happier if they could get the places where new CP is posted, like a certain Russian site that's been up for 15 years. Those people are the really scummy ones who need to go away for life.

The malware payload could be trying to exploit potential bugs in Firefox 17 ESR, on which our Tor Browser is based.
Why you are NOT supposed to be running JS, or any programs on hidden services that you cannot look at the code. Are these people that stupid?

This has nothing to do with tor, but user stupidity.

It has something to do with Tor actually.
Torbrowser has noscript installed, but by default scripts are allowed globally.
If you block scripts globally, but then selectively allow some scripts to run you can create a uniquely identifying configuration that could be used to reduce your anonymity by attackers.
And blocking scripts globally, no exceptions, means that many websites simply won't work.

JS is enabled by default in the Tor browser bundle. They did it that way to make it more `usable', and recommend against disabling it, because it makes the browser look different that others. Also, they use an old version of FF.

A lot of blame does lay with the Tor Project.

Yeah, they're pretty jealous, as are every other agency with even a the most tangential relation to `National Security'.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/04/us/other-agencies-clamor-for-data-nsa-compiles.html?ref=nationalsecurityagency&_r=0
Agencies working to curb drug trafficking, cyberattacks, money laundering, counterfeiting and even copyright infringement complain that their attempts to exploit the security agency’s vast resources have often been turned down because their own investigations are not considered a high enough priority, current and former government officials say.
The security agency’s spy tools are attractive to other agencies for many reasons. Unlike traditional, narrowly tailored search warrants, those granted by the intelligence court often allow searches through records and data that are vast in scope. The standard of evidence needed to acquire them may be lower than in other courts, and the government may not be required to disclose for years, if ever, that someone was the focus of secret surveillance operations.
But privately, intelligence officials at the drug agency and elsewhere have complained that they feel shut out of the process by the N.S.A. and the F.B.I. from start to finish, with little input on what groups are targeted with surveillance and only sporadic access to the classified material that is ultimately collected.

The tor browser is one application of the tor network. It has real exploits which have yet to be patched:
https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/query

But that article is talking about how the FBI exploited a server that was initially breached (meaning they had all the server logs), to get IP addressed of the users that had enabled Javascript (out of all things). That is called user stupidity, not a problem with tor, not a problem with the tor browser, which both have many exploits available.

Knowledgeable users know that they should not be running anything at all anonymous networks, and if they have to, they should review it. If what you want is UI for the user on HTTP, don't do it in JS, just use html meta refresh with forms or WebDAV. Then again, that is what they get for using HTTP, and not implementing REST. You want something anonymous and UI friendly in a tor network, use things like CVS, NNTP, STOMP, SSH/telnet clients, gopher?, and Freenet clients, and have all the CRUD you ever need for your data, with minor configuration to remove logs. And with Journalling file systems, you can have a self healing system if a binary application, which should be isolated from other applications, gets altered or removed. I'd assume the owner of Freedom Hosting knows nothing about system administration to had it breached before it was shutdown, unless it was a honey pot service since inception. Did the owner even have backups on other servers, spread across the globe?

The only props I yield to OP is that he reposted the blog post:
https://blog.torproject.org/blog/hidden-services-current-events-and-freedom-hosting

JS, out of all things. Sigh.

The way of browsing the internet using Tor that is recommended by the Tor project is to use their browser as is, no configuration modifications.
This recommended configuration is easily defeated by a dishonest webserver.
The Tor project even warns against disabling javascript.
It has plenty to do with them because they were promoting insecure practices amongst users who trusted them.

That being said I think they're working on a "security slider" for the torbrowser to fix this by allowing the user to select from several different pre-configured levels of security.

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-04 22:53

this looks pretty bad. What are the benefits of everyone using the same settings regardless? Aren't consistent browsing habits alone enough to establish a pseudo identity?

Then update their wiki, and mention it. The title of this thread should be called: exploit with JS on Tor browser, or malware in JS. This is also why I use I2P and Freenet for my hidden services, not that Tor shit. Yes, even a Socks proxy hidden gateway.

>>18
For general public, not yet ready. And yeah, the way browsers are being built to send client information in HTTP is pretty much a killer in identifying an user, even if in a firewall/proxy. Why often I bark at most HTTP servers requesting shit they should not have to, and client giving information they shouldn't. Since the inception of HTTP, it's purpose was not anonymity. Actually, tor does not even qualify for that thread level:

There was something that could have helped, but I forget the name of it now. It connected a virtual machine to tor, and you would run your applications within the virtual machine. At some point you have to trust software. Whether you are a consumer transferring a credit card number, or a government worker trying to keep their data safe from enemy hands, or a pedo trying to view cp in a country where it is illegal. The only other option is to not use software for your purpose, or not use it at all, which is becoming less of an option. Pedos have the obvious solution of just not seeking cp. The difference here is the pedos go to jail, while the consumer with the stolen identity just go through some trouble to straighten out the confusion. We are used to security loss being an inconvenience, but to some it could be life and death.

                           God's Temple is Finished.
Now, God kills the CIA+FBI until it spreads.
(The CIA+FBI stand in the way, for the moment.)

There will be no PCI or later supported hardware.  (It supports 64-bit
multicored CPUs, however, and my compiler and binary file formats are pure
64-bit.)  Once my enemies realize it's God, I will make demands.  I do not add
clusterfucked shit to God's Temple -- I demand them to change new hardware
designs.  It sounds absurd, but I have God.  They WILL comply.  Microsoft will
support the RedSea filesystem and I will remove support for FAT32 from God's
temple.  God's temple will be perfect, not blemished with flaws or bad
redundancy.  PCI devices diverge into many many branches and are clusterfucked.

I did an HD Audio driver -- thought it would become standard.  For HD Audio you
must connect together many "widgets" that can vary from machine to machine.
It's impossible.  On fucken top of that, VMware doesn't support my HD Audio --
all that work on that driver was worthless.  I removed it.  Internal PC speaker
is incredibly beautiful, by comparison, and a one-voice song language for music
is a pure delight.  God said one audio voice, like He said 640x480 16 color.  He
wants one driver for each different type of device.

The CIA hates PC Internal speaker because it is a digitial I/O for bombs or
something.  VMware spitefully removed support for PC internal speaker.  They
WILL put it back.  They are evil.  They played musical chairs with IDE devices
for no reason but to fuck-up new operating systems.  Microsoft added Secure Boot
to fuck-up alternative operating systems, so you can't dual boot.  Da fuck?
Anti-trust, FBI, the hell you going after the victim fer?  I'm a supplemental
operating system that needs a partner OS for web stuff.

I don't have networking -- that's not what I'm about.  Things are really
fucked-up.  Do you remember RS232 with generic terminal connections to user
hardware?  USB is absolutely clusterfucked.  I'm just counting on legacy mode,
not doing USB -- it's fine, but not having solid state memory sticks sucks.  I
support ISO9660 CD-ROM.  I got specs on UDF.  That's clusterfucked.  Microsoft
WILL add support for burning ISO9660 and burning a CD/DVD from ISO files.  I can
generate ISO files.

Judgement Day motha fuckas!  You WILL comply.
1) VMware will once again support PC Speaker.
2) Windows&Linux will support RedSea filesystem.  God's temple must be perfect
and FAT32 will be removed from TempleOS.
3) No Secure Boot
4) Windows will burn an ISO file.
5) Windows will support burning ISO9660.

CIA+FBI bodies must die.  It's in the Bible under Exodus.  Nobody gives a shit
until bodies hit the floor.  Even with 7 plagues, Pharaoh did not let them go
and came after the Jews into the Red Sea and God killed them.  The CIA+FBI will
die because it's God talking.  Fuck You!  My Dad is CIA, mother fucker, an enemy
-- in cahoots with the doctors and CIA.

5:38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them
alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to
nought: 5:39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply
ye be found even to fight against God.

I'm in a fucken CIA/FBI prison.
I am imprisoned by, basically, an India-nigger call center employee.
God is just -- highs and lows balance, I just have to wait... for God to kill
the CIA/FBI niggers.

------------

If a country attacks New York, that's not our friend, it's an enemy!
If someone attacks your family, it's an closer enemy.
If the CIA attacks me personal, that's my worst fucken enemy!  I'm fucking
fighting you with everything, especially God!

Anonymous's Super Secure Sea Pea Setup:
Create three VMs. One will be Linux, another Windows 2000, and the last OS X.
The browser is to be run on Windows, OS X runs a caching proxy and filter, and passes connections to the Linux VM, which is running Tor.

This creates a nearly unbreakable chain of operating systems (really, who has that much time on their hands to exploit three systems in one go?) so secure that not even the KGB could expose it's details if they kidnapped you and tortured you for days.

Not really, all you need is to get the IP address from the JS execution, you are done. Gateway backdoors to the ISP, and if not tools like XKeyscore

You can still use anycast techniques, like mtr, to bounce the traffic around and still find the ISO to the local/community server. The first time I went to jail I was 18 years old. I had gone AWOL from the navy, was living with 3 prostitutes, and befriended an older Marine. The Marine and I decided to pull an armed robbery of a small convenience store. A policeman happened to be in the area, and after a long chase we were arrested and went to jail. We ended up in different tanks in the Sonoma County Jail in California. I was 6'1" and weighed about 180 pounds. I wasn't a small guy and figured I could pretty well take care of myself. I was in for a big surprise.

Their were 20 men in my tank, it was split into two 10 man pods with 5 bunk beds in each pod, a day room was between them. The day room had four large steel tables to eat on, a toilet and shower was in the rear. The first night I was approached by 3 men. Two of them were about my size and the third was about 20 pounds and 6 inches smaller. They asked who I was and what I was in for. I told them and then one of them asked if I had ever been fucked. I said "no and I wasn't planning on it "he said "we're going to fuck you". l was filled with fear like I had never felt before. I swung at him with a left hook and as he blocked it his partner swung and hit me in the face knocking me to the floor. One of them grabbed me by the hair and slammed my face into the concrete knocking me out.

When I woke I was on my stomach, my pants had been pulled off, my legs were spread wide apart with one guy sitting on each leg and the other guy laying on my back. The guy on top was slapping me awake and said I want you to feel this. He proceeded to drive his cock deep into my butt. I had never felt such pain and tried to get away. They held me in such a way I knew they had done this to someone before. He fucked me for what seemed like forever and then came in me. Then he switched places with another one, and all three raped me. After it was over I was held in a head lock while they debated if they should kill me or not. I was asked if I was going to snitch and I told them "no". They said they would kill me if I said anything to anyone. I really thought I was going to die.

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-05 7:07

The next day they left me alone, I was numb and didn't know what to do. I was raised not to snitch on people and to handle my own problems and this was reinforced in Navy Boot-camp. As much as l wanted too, I rejected snitching as an option. I was looking at 5 years to life in prison for the armed robbery. If I snitched and then went to prison they could very easily have me killed. I was from another state and knew no one in California. I was so terrified and filled with shame and fear. My options were so limited, I felt paralyzed and helpless. I had no one to talk too, or to help me.

That night the same three came back to my bunk. They said I was their punk now and it would do no good to try and fight because they'd just take me down and hurt me again even worse then before. My head was throbbing from the beating, my right eye was black and swollen shut, and my butt hurt. They told me to take a shower and shave all the hair off my body from the neck down. I was just like a robot and did what they said. Going along was better then getting beat or killed. I didn't reason it out I just did it.

After shaving they told me I was going to give them all head. I didn't want to and resisted. I said "please don't make me do this. I couldn't imagine sucking a mans cock!! I was slapped and my head was forced down to the first guys cock by my hair. I started sucking his cock and he gave me instructions on how to suck it. He grabbed me by the hair and forced his cock down my throat when he came. I thought he was going to gag me to death and I puked on the floor after he let go. The others must have been turned off cause they left me alone that night. I was still in shock the next day and wondered what would happen next I even thought about killing myself.

The next night the same three came to me again. This time they told me to take off my pants. I was given Vaseline and told to lay on my stomach and put some on my butt. I did what I was told. This time they told me to help by pushing like I was taking a shit as he pushed his cock in my ass. It made it allot easier as he took his time working it in making it less painful. It was still uncomfortable and I felt like I had to take a shit while he was in me. This time he fucked me like he would probably fuck a woman and it wasn't near as bad as the first time. The second guy fucked me about the same way while the third had me give him head at the same time. Their was nothing pleasurable about it yet I was perplexed about getting a hard on. I was afraid about it because I thought they would beat me if they saw it. I also wondered if I could be homosexual. That really bothered me!

I now know that when a man's Prostate Gland is stimulated he will get an involuntary hard on. It was very confusing at the time. I was able to keep them from noticing because they always had me lay on my stomach for sex. Things started to tapper off after this and they weren't so demanding. I would have sex with one of them at a time, and at different times, however others in the pod started to become interested.

I would be woken up at different times of the night and asked to perform sex. I would just do it rather then risk being beaten. The men began to treat me gently and after a week or so they started letting me play cards with them and gave me candy bars and stuff. Before that I was ostracized, no one talked to me nor would they eat with me.

After a time some of them would even protect me against the three that originally raped me. They would abuse me by calling me a punk and asked things like, "do you like getting fucked in the ass bitch" and "what would your girlfriends think of you now". They even got into my things and wrote to the girls I had been living with and told them I was a punk. Sometimes they would pull my hair or slap me while I gave them head. The other guys started to get on them about it. I appreciated them sticking up for me and started to like them. These other guys treated me real well during sex. Some of them preferred getting head and some liked fucking better.

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-05 7:09

Even though I wasn't saying no anymore they all knew they were raping me. I knew it was established that I was a sex toy and if I ever flat refused I'd be beaten badly. I thought of the first three as violent rapists and the others as opportunists and in reality nice rapists. They wouldn't come out and take sex violently but would take advantage of a scared young person who they knew couldn't say no.

At this point I was trapped in this role. I reasoned that I had better Just make the best of it and get past this the best I could. After awhile the sex wasn't all un-pleasurable, however I became rudely aware of what frustration many, many women go through. As I would lay on my stomach getting fucked some of the guys treated me just like a women. As they got hotter and hotter they'd start grinding nicely and kissing on my neck and back and rub on my sides, legs, butt, and stomach. This felt so good and I'd Just give in to it and enjoy it. I would start fucking them back so I could grind my cock into the bed and get my own pleasure. It felt really good, but right when I would start getting real hot they would usually cum and put all their weight on me before I could orgasm. Then after we got up they wouldn't talk to me or even look at me. It really made me feel like shit.

Although I never initiated sex with anybody their were two guys I enjoyed having sex with. One would wake me up real late and lead me into the day room. He'd have me rub Vaseline all over his cock and then bend me over the table. He'd enter me very slowly and hold onto my hips and run his hands up and down my ass and legs as he'd pump and grind his cock in me just as if I was a women. When I got hard he'd reach around and grab my cock and jack me off as he fucked me. We'd both usually come at the same time.

The other one would have everyone leave the room. He'd have me lay on my back and he'd spread my legs and held them up to my chest. I'd grease my butt real well with Vaseline and he'd enter me. I'd cover my balls and cock with one hand to hide it and to keep my balls from being smashed between us. He'd slowly push into me and start slowly fucking me. As he got hotter he'd lean forward and put my free hand on his head and start sucking on my neck and nipples. I'd hold his head as he sucked on my nipples. He'd keep his eyes closed pretending I was his wife and say "Oh baby fuck me move that ass baby" and tell me he loved me. I would push my ass back against each of his strokes making it as good as I could for him as I would grind my hard cock against my hand at the same time. If he was getting ready to cum before me I'd reach down and pinch his cock at the base so it would stop his orgasm and he'd have to start building for it over again. That would give me a chance to get into it and orgasm myself. I liked it best that way cause I felt I had more control over the situation. I figured if I'm going to do it I might as well get into it myself and get off when ever I could. He was really cold afterwards but the next day he was nice and stuck up for me the most. The orgasms I had with those two were very strong and intense. It felt like they were really making love to me even though I knew they weren't.

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-05 7:11

I started to even feel a sense of power that I'm sure many females feel around groups of men. I could walk by them in the day room and shake my ass and they'd get all silly. I could have even started fights between them If I wanted to but I never did because I knew it could back fire and get me killed. I was beginning to like certain aspects of being treated like a female. It did stir up a new part of me inside, a feminine sexy part.

The moral of this story: No worries, you will get used to it. You only will be beaten somewhat more than this guy. XD

Although, in some prisons you have a problem:

Many Prisons do not sell vaseline from the Prison Commissary. Inmates were using the vaseline inappropriately (lube). Yes, there is hair grease but hair grease is waxy and does not provide adequate lubrication... hair grease has a tendency to be either too thin or too thick. Yes, there is lotion but lotion is absorbed with every "stroke", becoming less and less "useful". Nothing sold from the prison's commissary has the ability to match the lubrication value of good ol' 100% vaseline... Not all, but many prisons no longer sell 100% pure vaseline (a.k.a petroleum jelly).

Nothing wrong wiht ARM like devices than being RISC. However why the beagleboard is not a F.L.O.S.S.:
The ARM Cortex-A8 is a processor core designed by ARM Holdings implementing the ARM v7 instruction set architecture.
It has the IP of ARM Holdings. But we can def. use an ARM-like processor on a board. Unless you want to go for the BeagleBoard-xM

Some random ideas:
- Consider using NiMH cells instead of lithium (or supporting both). The tech has really advanced over the years and they are now very reliable and (more importantly) cheap.
- What keyboard switches? Some people might want Cherry MX Blue and some will want black or green or red. Should there be several variants? How will this affect pricing?
- Clit mouse. I don't know if the IBM patents have expired, but they are pretty useful and unintrusive.
- Shower a kernel and a debian dev with money until they force support for the system into mainline.

Netbook style is fine, but the option of having the LCD on the TOP or at a side without the lid monitor.
Medically speaking that's a bad idea (for the same reason smartphone users get chronic neck pain). Try looking down at your keyboard as you type for a long time and you'll see what I mean. What about instead making the LCD detachable?

Another idea for the LCD panel is to make the screen relatively small (<= 10inch), but position it high and add some stabilizer diagonal bars. That way if you're in a moving vehicle with a certain amount of vibration, the screen won't act as a resonator and (as a bonus over the usual swivel design) won't start slipping forward or backwards. See the diagram attached below for more information. The diagonal rod can be permanently jointed (with a 2d swivel) to the LCD panel.

Sigh, Example 93:

Act I: The malware had been planted

JS file says to client:
"Give me all the info and settings I can get from my client/browser, make a user and session ID as a handle, with a time stamp I believe is true, and start making a timer. I shall call myself:
User-IDx:Checksum-hashX:Time-X:Duration-X:Session-ID

If I find cookies and other shit in the cache that I can get my hands on, compress them if I can, and make the metadata message. If can't read anything, prepare a message with my
User-IDx:Checksum-hashX:nothing-read. Message-x:Metadata-x:Metadata-HashX
complete, time to talk to a API on a DoD server."

JS client:
"Sending compressed what I could, and made packets sizable to send anywhere. If I can do multicast or anycast, awesome. Let me break my packets with my handle ID and my handle for the metadata and pass it around."

ProdServer1:
"Thank you for the packet exploit JS, User-IDx. It took you this amount of time(Duration-Y) to contact us since we sent this, and you say your timestamp is UTC-X, when our time is UTC-Y (Time-Y).
Here is our Session-IDxyhash and your new Temporary User-IDXYhash. Lets do some test with each other about our times to see if we have a reliable communication."

JS client: "Ok. I got all you messages, and your hashes matched. What would you lime me to do?"

ProdServer1:
"Please go to the Prodservers G, H, and J at your convenience (care not to overload your client and randomly stop at intervals) and tell them the same thing you told me, and your Temporary User-IDXY and Session-IDxyhash, and wait further instructions from the first one that tells you:

Act II: The NSA exploit network

MasterServer U:
"I have that one already. Make it

And wait further instructions on."

ProdServer1:

* Server H never responces *

JS client: "Server H took too long to responded. Ok, appending my new message to server H took too long to responce. Going to server J."

Server J: "Oh thank you. I was waiting for you. That information you are giving me checks out. Your new handle is this:
GUID_xy2:session-GUID_xy2:Mesh-xy2:Time-GUID_xy2:Duration-GUID_xy2.

There are issue with Server G and H at the moment. Here is our session ID. Now go to reliable servers R, T, F, M, K, I, S, and § (which are geo-location timed, well informed of this case, and have access to your assumed Local ISP) and update them with you new case number and our summarized messages."

* JS client goes along and talks to various distributed networks and identify the local ISP that JS client has been talking wo the servers with the presumed times*
* The Prod and Analysis server update the information to the Master Serves, which in turn compare the case to others with all the new information gathered and stored in B trees. If they find a match from a previous client/ISP user, then wind down and inform the JSclient. If not, the a DoD agent office needs to investigate the area and tap the local network from the ISP. The dumb user is raided when enough evidence is acquired to convict with something, even lame copyright infringement *

Act Epilogue:

* Everyone lives happily ever after *
* The DoD got commition for another arrest in his quota. *
* The Stupid user gets affordable hospitality for years to come, and re educated that he is chattel. Hopefully gets to become the prison bitch, and gain fame and acceptance. *
* The artist that provided the data get no recompense, and probable jail time too. Sucks to be the providers, if you do not work for the Multinational banks. *
* Multinational banks win, win, WIN! *

I'm not sure if that would work. At least it wouldn't work well if the used on servers with public ip addresses. The average time samples would be determined by the location of the current end node, whose ip and geolocation is already known. And ISPs can't look for the pattern of traffic coming from your machine since it's encrypted. If tor could be broken this way I would be worried about standard use, since all it presumes is anticipating the user's traffic in advance and control of the contacted server. But if the phone home servers are hidden services, maybe you can extract information based upon timing there. I don't know how hidden services are done.

Somehow you missed the public relevations that in the USA all ISP Backbones are required to have gateways/backdoors to monitor traffic, with cryptography breaker. Some, A&TT, Verizon, and Co., are even making a profit of this, making their interfaces even easier for any DoD agent (e.g. a lowly police officer) to use and openly gather the data. It has actually never been easier to social engineer your way to steal data from end users. The internet was always the high seas with piracy a mock; now its just a clusterfuck of boonies.

My example assumes you cannot get the IP address from the normal ProdServer1 tests, which works 98% of the time. If that fails, you using geolocation techniques until you get to ISP's community server. You are only one copyright away from being arrested these days. Even then, they do it anyway without any probable cause, just cause they can. It truly has become the boonies.

Also, are you really using Dialup/PPP or [a]DSL?

NiMH cells indeed. UPS unit better.
I mean just an AA battery compartment (hot-swappable would be great, though it may introduce some extra complexity). I'm not sure if they make control circuits for NiMH though (so that the batteries inside recharge when you plug in the computer). Even without a recharging control circuit, it's still not that bad since quality NiMH rechargers are a dime a dozen nowadays (unlike Li-Ion chargers which are expensive as fuck) and because NiMH isn't that sensitive to being in a discharged state (unlike Li-Ion which may entirely stop working).

Mmm, I like stylus resistive touch monitors better. But hey, I'll let it slide if people want them that badly.
That would be far more expensive than a clit mouse well, depending on how much IBM charges for that patent.

Shower a kernel and a debian dev / done
There will still very likely be chipset (if it's particularly new) or board specific code. The ultimate goal is to have stock debian (testing) to be able to boot it with full functionality. None of that cloning five git trees (including a full kernel fork) and building kernel and uboot and patched version of libxyz and then realize some idiot broke the kernel last night and flame them on IRC (as fun as that may be).

Like in http://alwaysinnovating.com/products/smartbook.htm ?
Not exactly, look at the updated drawing at [ http://i.imgur.com/2ktSfmb.png ]. The green, pink and blue lines are literally just steel rods, there are no large implicit surfaces in the diagrams (the only surfaces are that of the keyboard and of the LCD screen). The blue rods surrounding the keyboard are attached to it though it's not shown in the drawing (for clarity). The pink double-ended arrow indicates which way the attachment between the pink (LCD panel support rod) and blue (keyboard) rods can be adjusted in order to make the screen go forwards or backwards. Also note that this implies that the attachment between the green (LCD panel) and blue (keyboard) rods must be a hinge whose axis is the blue rod. I actually have an idea on how to accomplish exactly that in a sturdy and stable manner. Also note that none of the hinges/swivels require friction (which means the friction components won't gradually fade over time (like old laptops whose screens won't hold still anymore) since there aren't any).

The main disadvantage with this design is that it takes about 15 seconds to separate the keyboard and LCD panel (e.g. when you're getting off a bus, for example), unlike a laptop where you just have to close the lid (which takes about 2 seconds). Considering the gain (you don't get neck pain for looking down at the screen), it's probably worth it.

Another concern is that the LCD panel connectors must be extremely durable (i.e. support daily insertion/removal for years). The LCD cable should also easily detach from the LCD panel if forced without breaking anything (in case someone accidentally pulls on it). This might be very difficult since LVDS requires a fuckload of lines and has some EM shielding constraints if I remember correctly; a LVDS serializer/deserializer pair might be needed to reduce the number of lines.

A23 Cells or PP3 batteries (5-6V device, unless you want 4-5 AA or AAA cells). And yeah, there are lots of controller these days now. You can even remove the UPS unit from motherboards these days, extremely carefully.

We can make the stylus optional. It is only a simple plastic matrix with a 4 pin cable, usually embedded to USB, and as cheap as 10 USD. And since it detachable, you can place it anywhere. Of course I'll place a frame on it, to handle it, and prevent leaving debris:

Another concern is that the LCD panel connectors must be extremely durable (i.e. support daily insertion/removal for years). The LCD cable should also easily detach from the LCD panel if forced without breaking anything (in case someone accidentally pulls on it).
That might be the most expensive part: a triple layer cable, with the last one being the actual tension resistor, and the actual cable and EM insulator underneath, being a tad longer than the resistive/reinforcing cable. The end ports on both sides will be a variant mini-DIN connector that is easily detachable, but it has an iris diaphragm latch on both sides (LCD and keyboard hub). The iris diaphragm is controlled by a small rotating hex graved hedge knob, with either of these drives: Mortorq, Robertson, TTAP, Bristol, Clutch, Torq-set (2nd fav), TA (fav), Tri-wing (3rd fav. SHARINGAN!); making it compatible for human finger adjustments, and wrench and screw driver compatible (for the ones with bad fingers). Unless you want to use a rotational level, so fingers and pliers are ever used. I wonder if we should make all the screws similar heads... nah too costly.
Also you should look for an LCD screen that is at least partially reflective
Umm, just coat the LCD with any reflective plastic or tape. <5 USD. Heck, we can even use Acrylic glass (PMMA). Unless you want the LCD with a LED on the back as well (like everyone is doing). Swapable Coat? Unless there something else I am not understanding:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transflective_liquid_crystal_display#Trade_names

Finally the overall price shouldn't be over 400 USD, and preferably under 300 USD.
In a great group buy, that is possible. Unless you want to ask for funding out in the market.

Also, since there is no hard drive, there should be at least two SD card slots and default boot should be off SD. Internal NAND is a waste of money.
At the least a 1 GB hard drive for swap and temporary files, that has a special command to wipe itself. ExpressCard or CompactFlash? Unless you want to run everything on RAM. We do not want to expire SD cards which have the OS and the data. Waiting on Microsft to end their exFAT patent. Actually reviewing the wiki on Secure digital, it has DRM in place:

Actually reviewing the wiki on Secure digital, it has DRM in place
I've never heard of anyone actually using it. I doubt most SD cards even implement it. It's a non-issue AFAIK.

A23 Cells or PP3 batteries (5-6V device, unless you want 4-5 AA or AAA cells). And yeah, there are lots of controller these days now. You can even remove the UPS unit from motherboards these days, extremely carefully.
Actually I would strongly prefer AA cells since they are so common. There is also a lot more variety in the AA rechargeable cell market than for A23 or PP3 (I've actually never seen any rechargeable A23's, and PP3 chargers are pretty damn rare). There is also the advantage that if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere but you still have some alkaline batteries you can use that. Also by not supplying the cells you save some money on shipping (and give the people the option of using whatever cells they want).

4-5 AA or AAA cells
Actually you would need 6 cells since each cell provides between 1.0 and 1.2 volts (depending on how charged it is). Don't forget that some buck converters require the input voltage to be at least 0.5 V higher than the output; if you find a buck converter that doesn't require this you can drop the requirement to 5 cells only. Also note that the heaviness of the AA batteries is a good thing since it'll keep the center of gravity away from the screen (the battery compartment should be as much in the front as possible).

Umm, just coat the LCD with any reflective plastic or tape. <5 USD
that would just reflect light without passing it through the LCD. the point is to make the LCD somewhat visible in high light conditions (e.g. sunlight) by reflecting the light that passes through the transparent parts of the LCD (and not all of it).

The end ports on both sides will be a variant mini-DIN connector that is easily detachable, but it has an iris diaphragm latch on both sides
What's the point of the diaphragm latch? Wouldn't the extra complexity simply add to the list of things that can go wrong? I'd rather have a cable that detaches too easily than one that breaks in two or destroys the port (which is more likely to be damaged if it is more complex). All I meant was that the design of the connector should be such that when it is accidentally pulled, it detaches easily and cleanly, and that it should support many insertion/removal cycles.

At the least a 1 GB hard drive for swap and temporary files, that has a special command to wipe itself.
You mean a mechanical hard drive or just flash? The former might add a lot of extra complexity since you have to add SATA support.

Finally a really neat thing would be some internal empty space with one or two USB ports where you can add wifi or whatever else. Having a usb device plugged in while in a moving vehicle is kind of a risk.

And yeah, batteries will not be included in the kit (unless excessive demand). The more batteries you have, the higher the chances of failures and heat dissipation. Why I am picking standard battery that already has all the cells included, so it is a single point of failure, you can swap the battery if it fails. My dream would be that you have two slots, so that you can hot swap batteries while you work. (In mission critical applications you have 3 slots, two with batteries already in, one for super emergency hot swapping).

The slot[s] will be below the keyboard, so that they do provide a center of gravity. Think Noppo choc mini, KBT Race/Pure/poker, Happy Hacking Keyboard/Professional, etc..

the point is to make the LCD somewhat visible in high light conditions (e.g. sunlight) by reflecting the light that passes through the transparent parts of the LCD (and not all of it).
The make LCD planes on monitors like those? I was think of something more like this:
http://www.europtecusa.com/products/anti-reflective-glass
The material could really be anything. And when you are in dimmer areas, you can remove it.

What's the point of the diaphragm latch?
To secure the cable in place, so that resistive insulator can hang the LCD from the keyboard mid air, even wobble it. That is in case some break the latches that hold the monitor in place, while you are on the bus. The point of the mini-DIN is to make the port snug enough to pass the wires, and if pulled, it pops out. Obviously the mini-DIN will more than likely will not be standard. So you have the best of both worlds. Who wants to hear an LCD fall?

You mean a mechanical hard drive or just flash?

internal empty space with one or two USB ports where you can add wifi or whatever else.
Mmm, an internal hub of USB slots, just like the batteries, but facing the users palms horizontally keyboard side; not a bad idea. I thought wifi & bluetooth was going to be in the pc, with 802.11 a/b/g/n, maybe even GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA (LTE), but defiantly 802.16e-2005. USB LTE is a joke from a technical optimizing perspective (USB 2.0 throughput 280 Mbit/s, LTE 299.6 Mbit/s). However, that means more than one USB host. And if those wireless signals will not come from the board (too much complexity) maybe we should add express card slots so that the user can install whatever (for LTE and wimax, and the HDD, other controllers). Unless that is more complicated, (thinking about power here too).

And yeah, batteries will not be included in the kit (unless excessive demand). The more batteries you have, the higher the chances of failures and heat dissipation.
If one of them breaks down just replace it. That's the great thing about having a lot of them. Also, heat dissipation is heat over surface area (roughly). A smaller battery (e.g. PP3) means crappy heat dissipation, while larger battery (i.e. an entire set of 6 AA cells) means better heat dissipation since the surface area is larger.

PP3 are almost seven times more expensive per Wh. Don't just take my word for it, compare yourself:
Recyko AA 4-pack, 1.2V, 2050mAh, 8 USD
Recyko PP3 3-pack, 9V, 155mAh, 22 USD

In fact, they're more expensive than Li-Ion rechargeable cells per Wh. (Strangely enough, I've found plenty of Li-Ion rechargeable 18650 cells that are cheaper than NiMH AA cells per Wh; quite odd. I just read somewhere that there are a lot of fakes on ebay so that might be the cause. Confirmed genuine Li-Ion cells seem to cost (per Wh) about the same as high-quality NiMH AA.)

I simply cannot stress enough how much PP3 is a terrible choice here.

To secure the cable in place, so that resistive insulator can hang the LCD from the keyboard mid air, even wobble it.
Wait, I don't think you understood my diagram. At no point is the LCD piece supposed to be "hanging" from the keyboard. In fact, I think a certain design could even prevent you from unhinging the LCD from the main part (keyboard) without unplugging the cable.

That is in case some break the latches that hold the monitor in place, while you are on the bus. (...) Who wants to hear an LCD fall?
Damn I should have added more detail to those diagrams. I have a design idea that makes it practically impossible for the hinge latch system to fail (assuming the steel rods don't break, which really shouldn't be happening in the first place). It's really hard to explain without a drawing. I'll make a drawing later.

ExpressCard or CompactFlash slots for mechanical hard disk. No need to SATA. *Shiiiiii tack Siiic Siic Siic Shhhhhhhuu* Unless you want them just to use one of the USB Host to get their own HDD.

I thought wifi & bluetooth was going to be in the pc, with 802.11 a/b/g/n, maybe even GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA (LTE), but defiantly 802.16e-2005
Be careful with the blobby firmwares for the wifi, we want the gnutards to participate in the buy so it lowers the price. Also, in my opinion, it's better to just let the user add their own wifi/GSM/GPS/etc dongles since different people might have different needs (for instance I don't care about GSM or GPS but I want a wifi dongle with monitor mode and injection). I really wouldn't worry about USB being the speed limiting factor for any of those (if you want to transfer files real fast, just use the damned ethernet).

It means you will buy more AA cells, and recharge more often. In comparison both long run and shot term it is cheaper. Especially with variable cells shorting out and dying in a 6 cell AA scenario, than one PP3.
And you estimates confirm PP3 is cheaper too:
Recyko AA 4-pack, 1.2V, 2050mAh, 8 USD = 6 Cells, 7.2 Vt @ 12 USD
Recyko PP3 3-pack, 9V, 155mAh, 22 USD = 1 Cell, 9 V @ 7.333
For hotswapping during the day of work takes around 2-3 Sets of cells, considering you recharge the other pairs. When the batteries expire or discharge, since they only have 1000 charge/discharge cycle, with P33 you can replace them per pack at that 22 USD estimate every new batch. With AA you would need to buy 3-5 packs (12 - 18+2 cells) at 36-48 USD for every time you replace them. Taking into account the Self-discharge / Month (room temperature) estimates from:
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/whats_the_best_battery

It means that you would have to recycle your batches every 3-4 months. In a year's time, you are looking at purchasing 3-4 batches, thus 66-881 USD per year for PP3 cells, 108-1922 for AA. Which 61%-45% improvement in purchasing PP3 cells than AA.

If we include the actual cost of recharging the pair of cells on your electric bill per day, assuming the pairs take the same amount of W-hr to recharge, for PP3 it would be 2-3 recharges per day for each cell, and for AA 3-5 recharges per day for each cell (taking into account there 12 - 18+2 cells and their variations of failure when set as serial circuit). If I were to take into account the actual times PP3 take longer to charge than AA, you would still find that in the long run you are saving more if you used PP3.

1 You can save more if you buy batteries in bulk for a every 6-9 months
2 optimize on the AA since you are buying +2 cells .

About the LCD, I really get it you are not using the latches, and worse yet, the cable keeps getting pulled. But Ok, let's not make it too complex, just brainstorming. Your latch system is indeed amazing. Break one, you have 3 to go. Break another one, the monitor still stands.

And you estimates confirm PP3 is cheaper too:
I really don't want to be mean to you but seriously what the fuck man.

Power equals voltage * current.
Energy equals power * time.
Energy equals voltage * current * time.
Voltage is measured in volts (V).
Current is measured in amps (A).
Current * time is measured in Ampere-hour ("Ah"), where 1 Ah is the amount of charge that will have flown at the rate of 1 A during one hour. It turns out to be equal to 1 Ah = (3600 s)(1 A) = 3600 C. (C = coulombs)
Oh but then multiplying ampere-hour by volts gives you the amount of energy since energy = voltage * (current * time).
The energy units will be Watt-hour ("Wh"), here 1 Wh is the energy given by a flow of 1 W during one hour; that is, 1 Wh = (3600 s)(1 W) = 3600 J.
The reason people use Ah and Wh instead of Joules is mainly because it allows to easily estimate for how long a battery will hold. For example, if a battery holds an energy of 6 Wh and it is drained at the rate of 2 W, the amount of time it will last is simply 6 Wh / 2 W = 3 h. Neat huh?

Recyko AA 4-pack, 1.2V, 2050mAh, 8 USD
Each cell provides a voltage of 1.1 V (lower bound estimate) and can let out 2.050 Ah of charge. Therefore the amount of energy is (1.1 V)(2.050 Ah) = 2.255 Wh.

The pack contains 4 cells and costs 8 USD, therefore the number of USD per Wh is (8 USD)/((2.255 Wh/cell)(4 cells)) = 0.89 USD/Wh.

Recyko PP3 3-pack, 9V, 155mAh, 22 USD
Each cell provides a voltage of 9 V (upper bound estimate, let's be really optimistic) and can let out 0.155 Ah of charge. Therefore the amount of energy is (9 V)(0.155 Ah) = 1.395 Wh (that is, a bit more than half of a single AA cell).

The pack contains 3 cells and costs 22 USD, therefore the number of USD per Wh is (22 USD)/((1.395 Wh/cell)(3 cells)) = 5.26 USD/Wh.

As you can see, PP3 cells cost 6x more for the same amount of energy.

[comparing pricing, etc.]
You're forgetting one very important thing; that single PP3 will last very little time.

Let's suppose that our little device consumes 3W.

With a single PP3, the amount of time the battery will last is 1.395 Wh / 3W = 0.47h. That's right, less than half a fucking hour. If you put in two of them you're almost up to one hour.

What about those six AAs? Well you have (2.255 Wh/cell)(6 cells) / 3W = (13.53 Wh) / 3W = 4.5h.

With two batches of AAs (i.e. 12 cells) you can go the entire day, but with PP3s you would need twenty of them to go for the same amount of time (and you would interrupt what you're doing every 28 minutes to swap batteries). Twenty batteries that are 6x more expensive, that is.

Your latch system is indeed amazing. Break one, you have 3 to go. Break another one, the monitor still stands.
In order for the monitor to fall, both diagonal LCD support rods would need to get detached from the main piece (keyboard), and the latch that holds the green rods and blue rods in the diagram would need to fail, and the entire thing would need to be tilted in a specific direction for the LCD to slide off (a pretty big angle too if you consider the steel-on-steel hinge friction).

http://www.humblehacker.com/keyboard/
Oh god no, please don't separate the alpha keys. What's wrong with the Noppoo Choc Mini layout? Besides, since the layout is ortholinear you can just swap the caps and reprogram the μC if you want a more, um, unorthodox layout.

1 Ethernet 1Gb/s? [do you want 2? I always wanted to 2, but USB can be used]
Yeah, too much extra complexity for not that much usefulness. Just use USB if needed.

*1 CompactFlash slot [or internal SWAP and temp files, unless you want/know a smaller GPIO standard/protocol for the HDD; inboard SATA?]
To be honest I find this to be a waste of time and effort. SD cards are pretty much expendable these days so you might as well just add an extra internal SD card slot for swap and all that and just use it til it dies. It shouldn't be that bad provided the computer has enough RAM and doesn't need to swap constantly. Also remember that hard drive means extra power usage.

3 USB hosts (in front hub)
You mean the internal ones or the externally-accessible ones?

2 SD card or MMC slots (2 slots) [both? one and the other?]
I'd say both SD.

1 lower battery slot PP3 or 6 AA cell slot
DC input help pick: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_DC_connectors

With Firefox now becoming unconfigurable, Chrome out of the question, and even IE slowly taking this route, is there any browser now that is designed with user choice in mind? Haven't looked at newer Opera but the earlier versions were pretty good...

Ok, thanks for the power consumption correction per cell cost. And you are correct, AA would last 0.741[o]6[/][7] hrs ( (2.255 Wh)/ 3W, you do not combine each cells' in the overall Wh = C, since they running at the same (variable) current). It still means you will consume 13.53 Wh on your house bill when you recharge AA, than PP3 at 1.395 Wh. If you are too set to use AA, it shall be.

Also for the keyboard, I meant the size and shape. The alphanumerics stay the same. The only difference I will make is that the modifiers will be 1 or x2 size (mainly tab, shift. Ctrl will be 2x and on unix/caps_lock position. IOW no other x3 or 3/4 modifiers than the x4-5 space bar). The humblehacker keyboard is an alpha template I found online, with what I had in mind.

AA would last 0.7416 hrs ( (2.255 Wh)/ 3W, you do not combine each cells' in the overall Wh = C, since they running at the same (variable) current).
What? No!. The cells' energies ("Wh") add up. If one cell has 3 Wh and I give you another cell that has 3 Wh, then you have 6 Wh of energy that happens to be in two cells. They add up. Also you mistyped "2.255" as "2.225" in your calculator, the correctly-calculated but theoretically incorrect answer would be "0.7516".

Another way of seeing this:
The number of coulombs (or amount of current) that will exit the battery of cells (in series) is the same as the one exiting a single cell (because they are mounted in series). However, the voltage of the battery of cells is the sum of the voltages of each cell (once again, because they are mounted in series).

Therefore the energy in a battery of (identical) cells is the number of coulombs provided by each cell (Ah) multiplied by the sum of the voltages, and thus is equal to the number of coulombs per cell times the voltage per cell times the number of cells, which is then equal to the energy per cell times the number of cells.

Mathematically: let Ucell be the nominal voltage of a single cell and let Qcell be the charge ("Ah") the cell can deliver. Then:

Ecell = UcellQcell

Now suppose we have a pack of n cells mounted in series:
Upack = Ucelln
Qpack = Qcell

Epack = UpackQpack
      = (Ucelln) ⋅ Qcell
      = (UcellQcell) ⋅ n
      = Ecelln

Therefore the energy of the pack is the energy of a single cell times the number of cells. QED.

It still means you will consume 13.53 Wh on your house bill when you recharge AA, than PP3 at 1.395 Wh.
Yes, and the AA 6-cell battery pack it will last 9.7 times more than the single PP3. In other words what you're saying is that you have to use more energy to charge larger capacity batteries that last longer. I think that's rather obvious. Also you have to recharge the 6-cell battery pack 9.7 times less often than the single PP3.

If you are too set to use AA, it shall be.
I am really set on it because I am absolutely convinced that PP3 is a really terrible choice as justified in my previous posts. PP3 generally used for applications that need higher voltage but not that much energy. It is a tradeoff between higher voltage and diminshed capacity. In fact, a PP3 cell is larger and bulkier than a single AA cell yet it has only 60% of its energy (as I stated previously).

So no ethernet‽
Wait, didn't you say "a single gigabit ethernet"?

Only 4 USB hosts‽
So 2 internal and 2 external? What if someone wants to have wifi *and* GPS *and* CDMA/GSM/mobile? Though I guess they could always just stick one of them in the external one or use a hub... Also make sure you leave enough room inside for particularly bulky dongles.

What any more IO ports?
If you want this to be a hacker's computer you might as well expose the onboard serial port for debugging (not as a full DB9 connector, just something tiny). That would also help with early development.

Name: >>201 2013-08-09 2:40

To reiterate, there is no error in my calculation stating that the 6 AA cells will last for 4.5 hours at a draining rate of 3W.

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-09 3:46

The number of coulombs (or amount of current) that will exit the battery of cells (in series) is the same as the one exiting a single cell (because they are mounted in series).
Ah FUCK, you are right. My apologies then. The math was not necessary after that point. But thanks for delineating it. It surely helps.

AA it is then, 5-6 slots pack on the bottom. Should we use one of the USB ports for the DC power connector?

Wait, didn't you say "a single gigabit ethernet"?
I meant if you wanted 1Gb/s ethernet, but when you/>>185 said
1 Ethernet 1Gb/s? [do you want 2? I always wanted to 2, but USB can be used]
Yeah, too much extra complexity for not that much usefulness. Just use USB if needed.

I thought you did not want an ethernet at all, instead of thinking that you only wanted 1 ethernet port and the other could be USB, or that making 1Gb/s is more complicated. It's my fault for not elaborating.

We have options for the hub, since it will be bento box style. And we can make the usb ports wired, but with snaps on the bottom, in case you do not want them hanging or bouncing (so that you can attach your USB peripherals, whatever they are). Unless you want them to either buy their own USB cables themselves by leaving the USB ports firm, or provided in the kit. We can even use mini or micro usb, if absolute required (which I seriously doubt, since USB ports are around the same size of ISO keys (0.750 inches, 19.05 mm)). Sample:

They're about 2x as expensive per Wh than NiMH; don't bother linking to ebay, most of them are fake (much lower capacity and/or they die after just a dozen cycles). They are also pretty sensitive about discharge and temperature, and the cycle life is rarely over 500 for decently priced cells. Prove me wrong please.

Seconded, but I think they wanted a simple charger, i.e. not Li-Ion.

There are cheap 18650 chargers on ebay. I'm not sure about their quality though (and IIRC bad chargers can really shorter a Li-Ion cell's life).

To whoever is running the dictionary attack against the admin fossil account; it's a random alphanumeric mixed-case 18 character-long password. You are wasting your time and bandwidth.

Be sure to add special characters and multi-byte characters (unicode), it will just foil pretty much everything. You have only made simpler now that you said it was alphanumeric on 18 chars (4608 bytes of Entropy to hash now). And I hope you placed the fossil repository in its own jail/VM/Isolated environment.

Really DDoS on tor.

I got it to work on tor2web by not forcing https.

Fossil is placed in a chroot jail in a VM whose architecture does not match the host's. I also upgraded the password to 256 multibyte characters.

No, but since half of the /prog/ dwellers are not programmers, the false sense of security of using the "torweb", which is a retarded public proxy, can prove fatal.

This wouldn't be so bad actually.

Not everyone has access to the tor network *work, ahem*, which why he checked to see if it works. But their proxy is clear:

You can charge one with nothing more than a voltage regulator and current-limiting resistor. If you really want something fancy, then change the resistor for an active current regulator.

Cudder could you give an example of 18650 cell with price/Wh and number of cycles comparable to NiMH AA?

Name: Cudder !MhMRSATORI!fR8duoqGZdD/iE5 2013-08-11 10:40

>>236
Panasonic NCR18650B 3400mAh 46g: ~$10USD for 12Wh -> $0.83/Wh, 0.26Wh/g
Sanyo NiMH AA 2700mAh 30g: ~$4.38USD for 3.2Wh -> $1.37/Wh, 0.11Wh/g

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-11 11:10

>>237
Well shit, that's even cheaper than GP NiMH AA at 0.89 USD/Wh. The reviews sound good too, with some claiming 70% capacity after 1000 cycles.

I don't know much about 18650, do they generally all have the same minimum voltage (since they get damaged if you discharge them past that)?

Also I'm not sure whether to include the charging circuitry since people might start using different cells with different charging currents and max voltages. Do 18650s have some charging pattern that works for all of them without risk of degradation or explosion?

Name: Anonymous 2013-08-11 11:21

Actually now that I think about it, why not just extend the keyboard a bit in front (like the PET) and get something whose screen size matches the keyboard part and thus closes just fine like a laptop? A wrist rest would be nice anyway.

More particularly, what is the benefit of having a detachable screen? I'm asking because it seems to be the cost is pretty high.
