PP3 then:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PP3_battery = Nine-volt battery
IEC name:  6HR61 (NiMH)
ANSI/NEDA name:  7.2H5 (NiMH)
Citation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_battery_sizes#Non-round_batteries

And yeah, batteries will not be included in the kit (unless excessive demand). The more batteries you have, the higher the chances of failures and heat dissipation. Why I am picking standard battery that already has all the cells included, so it is a single point of failure, you can swap the battery if it fails. My dream would be that you have two slots, so that you can hot swap batteries while you work. (In mission critical applications you have 3 slots, two with batteries already in, one for super emergency hot swapping).

The slot[s] will be below the keyboard, so that they do provide a center of gravity. Think Noppo choc mini, KBT Race/Pure/poker, Happy Hacking Keyboard/Professional, etc..

the point is to make the LCD somewhat visible in high light conditions (e.g. sunlight) by reflecting the light that passes through the transparent parts of the LCD (and not all of it).
The make LCD planes on monitors like those? I was think of something more like this:

The material could really be anything. And when you are in dimmer areas, you can remove it.

What's the point of the diaphragm latch?
To secure the cable in place, so that resistive insulator can hang the LCD from the keyboard mid air, even wobble it. That is in case some break the latches that hold the monitor in place, while you are on the bus. The point of the mini-DIN is to make the port snug enough to pass the wires, and if pulled, it pops out. Obviously the mini-DIN will more than likely will not be standard. So you have the best of both worlds. Who wants to hear an LCD fall?

You mean a mechanical hard drive or just flash?
ExpressCard or CompactFlash slots for mechanical hard disk. No need to SATA. *Shiiiiii tack Siiic Siic Siic Shhhhhhhuu*
Unless you want them just to use one of the USB Host to get their own HDD.

internal empty space with one or two USB ports where you can add wifi or whatever else.
Mmm, an internal hub of USB slots, just like the batteries, but facing the users palms horizontally keyboard side; not a bad idea. I thought wifi & bluetooth was going to be in the pc, with 802.11 a/b/g/n, maybe even GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSPA (LTE), but defiantly 802.16e-2005. USB LTE is a joke from a technical optimizing perspective (USB 2.0 throughput 280 Mbit/s, LTE 299.6 Mbit/s). However, that means more than one USB host. And if those wireless signals will not come from the board (too much complexity) maybe we should add express card slots so that the user can install whatever (for LTE and wimax, and the HDD, other controllers). Unless that is more complicated, (thinking about power here too).

PS
WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TOLD ME ABOUT ZigBee. THIS SHOULD HAVE THE NORM ON MOBILE DEVICES, WITH THE OTHER BANDS. WTAF. NOW DASH7 IS OPEN?!?
