SICP lectures fansub project

Name: HAHAHaruhi !6mHaRuhies 2009-05-24 23:28

Remember the now-defunct SICP Subtitles project (sicptitles.org)? We're REviving it!

Anyone is welcome to join the project and help with transcribing, editing, and typesetting. We currently have lecture 1a transcribed and ready to edit, and someone has so far already completed 15% of lecture 1b.

We'll be reencoding to 640x480, it doesn't look too bad upscaled and you can actually read the text on the slides that way. Does anyone know whether the .mpg or .avi raws is the better quality?

If all goes well, someone should dub the Abelson and Sussman into speaking Japanese.

Then we release torrents of them onto the usual anime trackers and watch what happens. We might even get some unsuspecting weaboos interested in SICP!

please don't post such fucking bullshit

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-27 15:46

So, let me get this straight.

You upscaled the video to improve the legibility of the subtitles?

That would mean that your playback system renders the subtitles at the video resolution, then scales the whole thing up, right?

If so, your playback system is insanely broken, and you should fix it rather than spoonfed the rest of the world with broken workarounds.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-27 15:52

Also, I hope you're not even considering permanently hardsubbing the subtitles, then encoding the whole mess to XviD and releasing that piece of shit to the world.

That's not the image you wish to give about SICP worshipers.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-29 3:31

>>38
I'll request that you comply with the fansubbing industry standards, briefly explained in >>30 by another /prog/rider.
On the issue of upscaling:
I've only seen the avi/divx3 320x240/mp3(48khz mono 64kbps) encode of the lectures, but you should get the mpeg2 one and compare the quality. Overall, the video exhibits many issues due to it being an old capture, many issues might be hard to fix without nuking the rest of the video entirely(what's left of it), but if you're re-encoding, you might as well try a bit(don't try if you have no idea what you're doing). It's possible for the client to resize locally and get subtitles rendered at a higher resolution, but it's not exactly doable without user intervention. Given the theme of /prog/, it might be appropriate to code a patch for ffdshow and mplayer which allows it to read embedded settings stream from mkv and use them, it might be smarter than upscaling, and is a feature some fansubbers might have wanted, but never got around to implementing it.

On the issue of subtitle format:
Using ASS would be easier on the eyes than SRT, as long as you choose a (dialogue) good font(and embed it in the mkv).

On the issue of audio format:
It's already bad enough, leave it as it is.

I wish they would consider REMASTERING the SICP lectures, but it might not be possible at all if the only recordings are some VHS tapes.

Name: Anonymous 2009-05-29 4:45

I think we should all sponsor a remake of the SICP lectures as a 26-episodes anime. Animation by Shaft, so that we do not need to front more than $10.000 per /prog/rider, with Masako Nozawa as Harold Abelson, Norio Wakamoto as Gerald Jay Sussman, and Aya Hirano as Julie Sussman.

What questions do you have? It's not like the source video is that good, so if it were me, I'd just use the original sources to avoid losing more quality(if I were to re-encode, i'd get rid of that dotcrawl/rainbowing in the source if possible), mux in the SRT and make a nicely typeset ASS track too, and mux that info a MKV.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-31 20:04

And since this is /prog/, you could just distribute a do-it-yourself program which muxes the video for the user from the .ass/.srt/*fonts* and original video (which can be downloaded from MIT).
If you do karaoke (any point?), there's plenty of nice ways to make readable and nicely looking one while avoiding hardsubbing.

timecop is a fucking OCD-ridden lunatic. Last time I checked he used a modified version of AVI-Mux GUI that puts "Windows Movie Maker 2.0" or some shit as the writing application for trolling (for bonus points, other than that, he used AMG's default settings for AVI files, which are incompatible-as-fuck - that is intentional though).

Plus, he used one of these Frankenstein VFW builds of x264 with enormously shitty settings (not optimal for encoding speed, decoding speed, or quality - some of them were obviously the broken defaults that said VFW builds ship with).

I didn't even hatch the ep because quality in general was utter shit (and they only do shit series to begin with).

tl;dr: dattesucks

that this might be programming in basic or pascal
in a different sort of syntax
today not even, or you can no longer support that belief
what we're going to today is going to completelyh smash thiat
so let's start up by writing a few programs on the blackboard that have alot of common with each other
what were going to do is try to make some abstratctions that are not easy to make in most languages
to start with some very simple ones that you can write in most languages
suppose i want to write the mathermatical expression that adds up a bunch of integers
so if i want to write down the sum of i = a to be from i
now you know that's an easy thing to compute
and you have a form for and i'm (not) interested in math
but i'm writing a program that adds up those integers
and that's rather easy to do
(write down program)
if i had an easy case that i know an answer to write it down
i'm going to make a subproblem that's an easier problem
(end writing down program)
now at this point

Yesterday,
All my lambdas seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
