SICP lectures fansub project

Name: HAHAHaruhi !6mHaRuhies 2009-05-24 23:28

Remember the now-defunct SICP Subtitles project (sicptitles.org)? We're REviving it!

Anyone is welcome to join the project and help with transcribing, editing, and typesetting. We currently have lecture 1a transcribed and ready to edit, and someone has so far already completed 15% of lecture 1b.

We'll be reencoding to 640x480, it doesn't look too bad upscaled and you can actually read the text on the slides that way. Does anyone know whether the .mpg or .avi raws is the better quality?

When someone does the encode. Any tips from experienced fansubbers here?

What questions do you have? It's not like the source video is that good, so if it were me, I'd just use the original sources to avoid losing more quality(if I were to re-encode, i'd get rid of that dotcrawl/rainbowing in the source if possible), mux in the SRT and make a nicely typeset ASS track too, and mux that info a MKV.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-31 20:04

And since this is /prog/, you could just distribute a do-it-yourself program which muxes the video for the user from the .ass/.srt/*fonts* and original video (which can be downloaded from MIT).
If you do karaoke (any point?), there's plenty of nice ways to make readable and nicely looking one while avoiding hardsubbing.

timecop does not qualify as experience.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-31 21:00

timecop hates MKV, try again.

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-01 9:11

timecop is a fucking OCD-ridden lunatic. Last time I checked he used a modified version of AVI-Mux GUI that puts "Windows Movie Maker 2.0" or some shit as the writing application for trolling (for bonus points, other than that, he used AMG's default settings for AVI files, which are incompatible-as-fuck - that is intentional though).

Plus, he used one of these Frankenstein VFW builds of x264 with enormously shitty settings (not optimal for encoding speed, decoding speed, or quality - some of them were obviously the broken defaults that said VFW builds ship with).

I didn't even hatch the ep because quality in general was utter shit (and they only do shit series to begin with).

tl;dr: dattesucks

>>101
I don't think there's any signs to typeset, but you could at least chose a decent style for the subs.

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-02 5:36

Are you telling you /prog/tards videoed ``The Sussman'' doing his lectures?

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-01 2:33

At least we can now claim that /prog/ has gone the farthest in terms of subbing the SICP lectures.

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-01 7:52

Thanks mate. Just in case anyone's wondering, it took me 10 months to read and complete the exercises the first time and 2 months to complete it the second.

I enjoy my SICP the way I enjoy my Touhous: by collecting memorabilia, not by partaking into the original activity.

Oh noes... secondary SICP fans in my /prog/... More likely than I'd think...
"secondary" touhou "fan" here, but I have read my SICP

Well yesterday was easy
You learned all the rules of programming
In lisp
almost all of them and so at this point
you're now all certified programmers
however, i started to reserve uh
these sorta tiny little bit of steps
do you still believe it's possible
that this might be programming in basic or pascal
in a different sort of syntax
today not even, or you can no longer support that belief
what we're going to today is going to completelyh smash thiat
so let's start up by writing a few programs on the blackboard that have alot of common with each other
what were going to do is try to make some abstratctions that are not easy to make in most languages
to start with some very simple ones that you can write in most languages
suppose i want to write the mathermatical expression that adds up a bunch of integers
so if i want to write down the sum of i = a to be from i
now you know that's an easy thing to compute
and you have a form for and i'm (not) interested in math
but i'm writing a program that adds up those integers
and that's rather easy to do
(write down program)
if i had an easy case that i know an answer to write it down
i'm going to make a subproblem that's an easier problem
(end writing down program)
now at this point
