most efficient language

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 7:52

always wondered, what language do you multi lingual people think is the most efficient in speech or written?

excluding english

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 8:46

Ruby. And if anyone says Java I'll cut your throat!!!

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 11:40

spanish and latin maybe?

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 11:55

Supposedly it's Esperanto.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 12:56

interesting
it probably depends on what your native language is? obviously english is more efficient to me
so spanish/latin/esperanto is either the most logical? clear? to the point? when you speak or write it?

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 13:00

Oh, if you mean to learn... I wouldn't learn Esperanto. That's more a hobby than a language. I dunno, I guess Spanish? German is lexically closer to English than any other language, so maybe German.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 13:08

>>8 i wasn't thinking of learning but that's a good idea.
i'm just always curious about different languages: what language do you think in? how easy is it to convey points? (this post) there's also the question of literal translations which i don't understand

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 13:29

>>9
Oh- well, I think in English. I speak English natively. I know Chinese, Japanese, and German, though. Any language is easy if you're willing to invest the time.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 13:39

Esperanto is old, several better languages have been created since then.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 13:49

Oh really? I didn't know that. What are they called? I'm curious.

thanks for your replies.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 16:56

No problem. I would think French would also be pretty easy to learn for a native English speaker- Quite a bit of English originates from French.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 18:06

>>12
Can't remember, I'm not very interested in this topic.  Check Wikipedia (OK, I'll do it), um, start here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constructed_language

French. Ridiculously limited vocabulary, and strict
composition in speech--all regulated by the country's
Academy. If you don't speak right, you'll be considered
a backwards hick--or worse, an Amerikkkan!

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-12 23:03

Lojban

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-13 1:10

J'ADORE LE FRANCAIS

at least it's kind of conventional with conjugations. english isn't so structured it seems, which is all right for me because i go by intuition, but if i were a martian i'd probably learn french instead of english

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-13 11:07

Why are people talking about which language is the easiest to learn in a thread about the most efficient language?

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-13 13:05

>>19
I dunno, lol. There is no "most efficient" language, because if it's still around today, it obviously works for the people who speak it. If you mean efficiency to learn, or efficient in the sense a lot of people speak it, then it would vary.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-13 17:45

English is basically a dialect of French, with more words and an anglo-saxon touch.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-13 18:37

>>21
I hope you're kidding. English comes from the Germanic family, French comes from the Romantic family. They have little to do with each other, besides some shared words.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-13 19:52

>>22
You, sir, are a fucking moron.

I suggest you catch up on the history of England. Remember when the French invaded England? English is a combination of French and the old Anglo-Saxon language. French was spoken by the Royal Court for year until they began speaking English because it became an acceptable language.

Shit, I'm not even European and I know this shit.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-13 21:23

But thats neither spoken nor written.

guyz, english is a french and german hybrid. end of argument.

so how do you mean efficient? able to express the most in the least words/fastest? that would probably be chinese. or with the least number of phonemes? that might be japanese or hawaiian. or with the least amount of grammatical 'decoration'? that might be just the casual/slang of any language. or do you just mean most consystent? that would probably be a conlang like loglan or lojban.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-13 23:27

Yeah, I remember it. I was fucking there. Fuckwit. Everyone who could remember it has been dead for centuries.
And by your fucking retard logic, I could say English is an Anglo-Saxon/Chinese hybrid, because ketchup comes from Chinese.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-14 0:36

english is an asian language. no, really.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-14 1:17

>>27
Wow, you fucking fail hardcore. The logic of historians everywhere, not just mine, say: France invaded England, defeated the Anglo-Saxons (which spoke germanic language), William the Conqueror proceeded to turn everything into french so everyone who was anyone spoke french. While everyone was speaking french the commonfolk would still speak their old anglo-saxon language and eventually they put anglo-saxon (germanic) language right into french and came up with ENGLISH.

Stop trying to make retarded ass analogies, I'm backing up my shit, you're doing nothing but speak of KETCHUP and CHINKS!

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-14 5:51

Ido, for example.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-14 15:16 (sage)

>>29
You said "basically a dialect of French" which is fucking wrong. 28% of English vocabulary comes from French, but 28% also comes from Latin, and 25% comes from Germanic. So why isn't English a dialect of Latin or German?
Fucking failure.
And it is classified as a Germanic language. You can throw as much history as you want at it, it's still etymologically a fucking Germanic language.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-14 18:27 (sage)

Cite your sources whenever you give out percentagse, you moron, then come tell me what is or what isn't. Your argument is void until you cite numbers.

english is efficient in that its vocabulary often uses many less syllables than other languages. something like half of english text is composed of one syllables words. compare this to any romance language.

The most efficient computer language, BAR NONE, is Forth.
That much is definitive.  As far as human languages, that is very difficult to say.  It would depend greatly on the metric used, the context of person speaking it, his culture, etc.

That which is more efficient for written language might not be so in spoken language, and vice versa.  And are we talking most efficient to learn, or most efficient to use once learnt?  Or some kind of sum or average of the two?  And use in written or spoken form?)  Efficient in its forms and rules?  Its spelling and pronunciation?  Its terseness?

At any rate, I don't know that a (human communication) language's "efficiency" is actually that important.  Sure it needs a reasonable degree of efficiency--but isn't expressivity more important?  Being able to express the concepts and ideas you want/need to express, the emotions and feelings you want/need to express, and get across to another human being just what's going on in your head.  At least so it seems to me.

This is a moronic question. No language is more logical or useful than any other, and therefore surely not any more or less efficient than any other. Each takes on the vocabulary it needs. One language may not have terminology for something, but it would not be difficult to develop it if the need arose. As for grammar, what seems logical to us will have everything to do with what we grew up with and what we know. Therefore, that's not much of a measure for how efficient or logical something is or isn't. Seriously, basic linguistics should be taught in schools. People believe so much shit about language.

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-11 18:34

I loled at the guy that said that english is basically a french dialect..... the grammar (which is basically the structure of a language) has nothing to do with french.. some words came from french, yea, but it still very unrelated.

Im from brazil, we speak portuguese here (brazilian portuguese actually), and a considerable ammount of words in this language came from ARABIC!! same with spanish.. but both language are latin languages and they have nothing to do with arabic

More than just some words. Wikipedia says it ranges from 28% to 41%.

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-15 20:43

English is actually a very efficient language, because it doesn't have any complicated declension, conjugation, grammatical cases, dual number and all those baroque featues. That makes it also suitable for machine processing.

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-15 23:09

German took the most deprecated portions of Latin and the Germanic languages. Any language that still has engendered nouns is immediately out of the running. And anything with more than two cases/declinations. While I have only studied Modern English, Old English, German, Frisian, and Spanish, I wouldn't be one to choose the most efficient. Out of those choices, however, it would have to be Modern English. Two cases, no engendered nouns, then again we have over 9000 tenses.

Perhaps Dutch or Afrikaans?

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-16 3:15

Russian is pretty efficient, despite a diabolically complicated grammar. Few words are wasted.

Don't change these.
