The logic of historians everywhere, not just mine, say: France invaded England, defeated the Anglo-Saxons (which spoke germanic language), William the Conqueror proceeded to turn everything into french so everyone who was anyone spoke french. While everyone was speaking french the commonfolk would still speak their old anglo-saxon language and eventually they put anglo-saxon (germanic) language right into french and came up with ENGLISH.
