A very old blog post by Shoko Ikeda (from 2004)

I have no special topic to tell you today, so I will tell you about my job.

Could you imagine what a "sakuga-kantoku" do?
Sakuga-kantoku is usually translated as "model director" or "director of models" in English .
But, "sakuga" originally means "drawing pictures" in English, therefore they became being called "animation director" recently.

When people hear "drawing animation", most of them would imagine the pictures. But, in this industry, "drawing animation" means "making characters acting".
People usually seem to think that an animation director's job is "correcting characters' faces (and bodies and so on)". But, what he/she exactly does is "correcting the quality of animation pictures".

Recently, when we make a TV series, we often appoint somebody to a post of the chief animation director, who correct the character models through every episode of it.
I think that fan of animation seem to want for us to be careful about "faces" of characters these days.
What do you think about such a situation ?

If you read this diary, you may think that I dislike my job, which is only making characters" faces similar to the original. But, I truly like my job. It is my pleasure because it is so enjoyable.

Recently, our key animators' skill has been really getting improved and I don't have to correct their pictures not so much like before.
(This is what I wanted to tell you in this diary!)
