EXORCISING THE PIMPLEFACED SHITLORDS

Name: Anonymous 2012-06-24 15:13

This board is fucking infested with mysoginist, racist, ableist  neckbeards. You middle-class white male idiots (the idiot property is independent of the other properties, before you get your balls in a twist.)

I'm a middle-class able-bodied white male too, but that doesn't mean I can't look around me and plainly see how my life is easier than racialized people, females, those of a lower economic status, or disabled people.

Holy FUCK you are some sheltered morons, who have so much privilege to nutrition and education, but APPARENTLY YOU HAVEN'T USED ANY OF THAT PRIVILEGE, BECAUSE YOUR CRITICAL-THINKING ABILITIES ARE FUCKING ATROPHIED.

Why aren't we discussing programming, god damnit. Go back to /r9k/

I dont know what youre blubbering about. The idea that some people have 'privilege' is just slave mentality that american blacks have held on to. They have never been able to adjust to being given their freedom, they continue to live in a dependent relationship on whites. They try to justify this relationship by saying that somehow whites have 'privilege'. The whole idea is childish and should be ignored. If blacks want to demand equal rights and fight discrimination, then that is a realistic concept. But they dont.

Again, you are bringing a persecution complex into this. This isn't about you. Privilege is an abstraction that describes patterns in society. That is all. I'm sorry that you are afraid of other people being able to analyze society.

>>41

It's funny that you both recommend the concept of privilege be ignored. But it makes sense. Those with power fear losing it. Knowledge is power. Therefore, those with power will discourage acquisition of knowledge.

Again, you are bringing a persecution complex into this.
Would you like me to make a statistical study over what percentage of people will interpret ,,privilege'' as blaming them personally?  I bet it's going to be most of them.

Privilege is an abstraction that describes patterns in society. That is all.
Why is it useful?  I've pointed out why I think it's a harmful abstraction, please point out why you think it's a good (therefore useful) abstraction.  I fail to see how studying privilege (as opposed to actual discrimination) is useful.

I'm sorry that you are afraid of other people being able to analyze society.
No, I'm afraid more and more people will misinterpret privilege and wage a war on the ,,privileged'' to ,,even things out''.  Idiotic things like restrictions on freedom of expression, so-called ,,affirmative action'', and eventually discrimination against the perceived ,,privileged'' are what I fear.  I know human stupidity has no boundaries, and this is why I fear.

Well, they are kind of dumb. You can't blame people for being privileged. For one thing, it can't be controlled, and even then there is nothing to be blamed for. You can be blamed for reinforcing the system that grants yourself privilege and excludes others. And you can be blamed for being ignorant of your own privilege. Many people use the fallacy, it was easy for me, so it must be for you, without realizing their own privilege.

Any abstraction is useful in analyzing the phenomena they describe. It is useful as an individual to simply be aware of how the world works. I suppose you would question the usefulness of physics if it happened to be controversial enough for you to take offense from it.

It is up to the individual what they want to take away from studying privilege. But all I hear from you is that you have power and you fear losing it. This isn't an argument, and has no bearing on the theory itself. I guess you are saying the theory is well founded, but it should not be studied because you find it to be dangerous. If that is the case, you may as well burn books.

And please sage because this is not programming related.

You can be blamed for reinforcing the system that grants yourself privilege and excludes others.
That's called discrimination.  I fail to foresee a situation in which one is reinforcing the system that grants one privilege and excludes others while not acting in a discriminatory manner.

And you can be blamed for being ignorant of your own privilege.
Nobody is stupid enough not to realize someone else is having a harder time than them (strictly using the definition of privilege, this is what it boils down to).

Many people use the fallacy, it was easy for me, so it must be for you, without realizing their own privilege.
I'm sure there's ways of explaining such an obvious fallacy without uttering the word ,,privilege''.

Any abstraction is useful in analyzing the phenomena they describe. It is useful as an individual to simply be aware of how the world works. I suppose you would question the usefulness of physics if it happened to be controversial enough for you to take offense from it.
You still didn't answer my request to point out why the notion of privilege is useful.  Give a non-bullshit (this excludes shit like ,,oh my, someone just posted a discriminatory joke on IRC, off with their fucking head!'') example where ,,privilege'' is required to explain why something is unjust but where discrimination is not involved.

But all I hear from you is that you have power and you fear losing it.
Correct, I have the power to make anus and discriminatory jokes on anonymous message boards in an environment where almost? everyone knows that I am indeed joking.  I would hate it if, for the sake of ,,countering cisgender heterosexual white male privilege'', feminists were out to shut down such a safe haven for non-politically-correct amusement.  Did I mention that I am a rude individual (at least on the Internet, where nobody knows you're a dog) and hate everything political correctness stands for (crypto-anarchists tend to hate censorship, even when self-imposed)?  Whenever I feel cold in winter, I just go to the incident list page on geekfeminism and my blood boils instantly (complaining about a FOSS document that uses ,,he'' too much instead of just editing it yourself so it uses ,,one'' or ,,they''? fuck you and die).

If that is the case, you may as well burn books.
I'll be content with just warning stickers saying that absolute freedom of speech is the most important right, and that the right not to be offended does not exist.

And please sage because this is not programming related.
Fine.

On a related note; I find privilege checklists to be a retarded meme.  See [ http://dis.4chan.org/read/prog/1339288465/57 ].

I agree and feel the same way about all of your responses, so I'll just respond to a few of them:

Nobody is stupid enough not to realize someone else is having a harder time than them (strictly using the definition of privilege, this is what it boils down to).
you would be surprised. People can be very idealistic, on all sides of the spectrum for that matter.

I'm sure there's ways of explaining such an obvious fallacy without uttering the word ,,privilege''.
yeah I'm sure there is, and it wouldn't have as much bagage, but the concept is still relevant.

You still didn't answer my request to point out why the notion of privilege is useful.
Basically, it is all in this: It is useful as an individual to simply be aware of how the world works. The first step in facing something is to simply know and understand what you are facing.

Are you >>33,36,42,46?  If yes, are you also >>1-turd (I doubt it since >>1-turd seems to be either a troll or a misguided piece of shit that doesn't understand humour)?

yeah I'm sure there is, and it wouldn't have as much bagage, but the concept is still relevant.
Okay, maybe it's me who has baggage; I've seen/read far too many examples of dismissing someone's logical arguments and points of view because they come from a ,,privileged source'' (okay I've definitely been reading too much geekfeminism wiki bullshit).  Telling someone that their life is easier than a certain category of people and implying that that causes incapacity in one's forming of a valid argument is just another form of ad hominem.  If you think you have a logical point to make, make it, don't just blurt out ,,check your privilege'' in the hope they'll suddenly become enlightened and go away.

Basically, it is all in this: It is useful as an individual to simply be aware of how the world works. The first step in facing something is to simply know and understand what you are facing.
So it's just about realizing that this world is shit and we all get oppressed in some way or another, some more and some less?  Hrmpf.  I suppose it might have just been me having a hang-up on the word ,,privilege'' itself.

Telling someone that their life is easier than a certain category of people and implying that that causes incapacity in one's forming of a valid argument is just another form of ad hominem.

Indeed. I'm not the wypmp spammer, although I thought it was funny.

So it's just about realizing that this world is shit and we all get oppressed in some way or another, some more and some less?

Yea, pretty much. It's just an analysis of how society works. And it can be useful to be aware of. Consider a teacher teaching students that come from various backgrounds. Students that grew up in different cities with different levels of income will have been at primary schools with varying quality. Students that have had less access to resources in their past may be less prepared than students that went to schools in better neighborhoods. If the teacher doesn't understand this varying privilege amongst the students, the teacher may attribute the underprivileged student's relatively poor performance to the fault of the student, ie, motivation or intelligence. When if the teacher had more awareness of the student's past, the student's level of progress may actually be impressive in retrospect. But the teacher wont be able to make this evaluation without awareness of the student's past and understanding that not all schools are equal. And likewise, the underprivileged student may attribute their relatively slower progress to lack of talent or ability, when in reality, the student may be exposed to concepts that the others have been already working with for a number of years.

The type of stuff you see on geek feminism does exist though. There are people that do argue those things. The philosophy behind it is basically that discrimination, racism, sexism, ect, used to be completely acceptable in the past. And despite the progress made, there are still remnants of these things in our culture, and that their use should be publicly recognized and exposed. Some (most) would go further to say that it should be censored and banned. I think public recognition is enough.

I thought it was irritating, more than the jew spam (which itself is fairly hard to beat).

Bah, the education system needs an overhaul anyway, stuff like this being part of the reason.  It's hard to assign grades if you don't have standardized testing, but I suppose you could use the delta between tests throughout the year to determine the amount of growth and then grade based on that.  Or something like that.  I'd rather leave education reform to child psychologists.

The type of stuff you see on geek feminism does exist though. There are people that do argue those things.
I don't always agree that what they perceive as sexist is actually sexist, and whenever that happens, my blood boils.  See:
http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Acme::Playmate_talk
http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Debian_IRC_sexism
http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Linux_Journal_blowjob_ad
In the case of the Debian IRC incident, I do agree that the official Debian IRC channel should be inclusive to everyone (it's just technical talk about a computer project after all) and that a separate unmoderated ##debian-offtopic channel should be used for off-colour and discriminatory jokes, and idle chat.  In fact, this should be the case for almost every official IRC channel.

Some (most) would go further to say that it should be censored and banned.
And this is why I want to fuck them in the ass with a rake.  I cannot stress enough how idiotic this is.  Seriously, free speech is what allowed us to get this far.  It is fundamental for me to know that I can make any kind of violent, discriminatory or political joke without any fear of repercussions.

What is your stance on pornography?  Mine is that the only war to be fought there is for ensuring equitable pay (as well as health services, etc.) for the involved females (which should be, needless to say, consenting).  I strongly believe in a ,,right to pornography'', and that banning it is an affront to the right to do-whatever-the-fuck-you-want-as-long-as-you're-not-hurting-anyone (this goes both for the viewers and the producers).
