As to answer your question, there's numerous imageboard software out there, but I'll try to compound it all into the most popular.

Futallaby - (http://www.1chan.net/futallaby/) It is a PHP script based on Futaba's script. (MySQL version) It is pretty much just a basic, English translated version. I would NOT recommend using this because it's horridly ancient. (Unless you're knowledgeable enough in PHP and MySQL to screw around with it. 4chan's script is based off of this script, but that's closed source and team 4chan won't release their version.)

Wakaba - (http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/web/wakaba_kareha.html) Is a perl script that is "strictly modelled" after Futaba and the Futallaby scripts. (Wakaba is considered to be Futallaby's replacement)

Documentation Wiki, help on installing, etc.

Support textboard
(http://wakaba.c3.cx/sup/)

Kusaba - Kusaba was once an imageboard script originally written for 7chan, but then was released to the public for anyone who wanted to start a 4chan look-alike. It is discontinued and no longer available from the original site. Forks of the script exist and are being actively maintained.

Kusaba 1.0.4 (Original script, last version)
http://www.megachan.net/chan-scene/kusaba-is-dead-here-are-the-installation-files/

Serissa - (http://www.serissa.org/) is a fork of Kusaba, first used by 7chan to update their aging Kusaba software and used by many smaller *chan sites. It is a popular fork and is actively maintained.

Kusaba X - (http://www.kusabax.org/) Is a Kusaba fork maintained by a fellow named Harrison. Aims to be "less crappy" than the original Kusaba script or its other forks.

Kusaba-2 - (http://code.google.com/p/kusaba-2/) Is yet another Kusaba fork maintained by Operator Chan. (http://operatorchan.org/) As far as I know it's horribly incomplete (even for a Kusaba based script) and I wouldn't recommend it.

PyIB - (http://code.google.com/p/pyib-standalone/) PyIB is a imageboard script written in python. It is maintained by the same person who wrote the original Kusaba script. Incomplete and buggy, would not recommend.

Thorn - (http://sovietrussia.org/code/src/thorn-11b9.tar.bz2) Thorn is no longer developed, would not recommend it.

Drydock - (http://code.573chan.org/site/page.php) is based off of the now defunct Thorn script. Looks promising, and appears to bring a lot of new features to imageboards, but is incomplete. Would not recommend.

My personal opinion? I would stay away from anything that has to do with Kusaba, unless you're not totally serious in running an imageboard. Wakaba seems to be your best bet. If you know enough about PHP and MySQL, why not modify Futallaby? Drydock will probably make for a pretty awesome script when it's complete. PyIB will probably end up being a very fast script once completed.

So in tl;dr - I'd recommend Wakaba, but modify Futallaby if you can. While you're using those check out Drydock and/or PyIB as they may become more of an alternative.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Fucking use Wakaba, NO EXCEPTIONS. It is the best thing out there right now. Only reason I would use Futallaby is if you don't want/or can't use Perl, Futallaby is PHP so almost every free webhost let's you. But seriously, fucking use Wakaba if you can.

Also, if you end up using Futallaby, google futallaby plus or futaba plus, I forget. Futallaby is strictly modeled after YE OLDE futaba, ie. you can't reply with images.

Kusaba is only if you want to make yet another cancerous 4chan clone website.

I really just want to make a board for history and history related discussions.

Use Kareha. Seriously. Textboards are more appropriate. I believe you can also post images on Kareha (it's probably an option in config or something I've seen it on the wakaba support textboard), but the main purpose of kareha is to serve as a text board platform.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-23 6:21

>>10
Nevermind, I am a moron. Kareha is just a different kind of beast. Wakaba is an image board that uses mysql. Kareha is a message/image board that doesn't. But yeah, you should totally give Kareha a try. You can use it as a message board with the option of being able to up images. Look nice too.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-23 7:18

With support for both Perl and PHP, it's probably one of the better free hosts out there.  Good no matter what popular imageboard script you use (I personally use Kareha).  Note that you have to set up a CGI wrapper (a very simple task) to run CGI scripts (such as the Perl scripts that make up Wakaba and Kareha).

Name: !f9WPPjunkU 2009-01-28 4:17

I'll dissent from everyone else and recommend Kusaba.  Easy to install, easy to modify (now), easy to add another board, and some pretty useful admin features.  Of course, everyone else and their brother runs Kusaba currently.

PROTIPS:
1.  Make your own stylesheet and don't go with the defaults, unless you want to be horribly generic.
2.  Don't try to clone an existing imageboard.
3.  Don't make too many fucking boards.
4.  Change the damn front page.
5.  Don't spam your imageboad everywhere (See img.pushthenet.com)
6.  Get listed on the overchan.

Like I said in >>14, I recommend nxserve.
http://nxserve.net/
Has everything you'll likely ever need: Perl support (provided you can follow the simple instructions to set up a CGI wrapper), generally god uptime (occasionally down, but up often enough for a small imageboard), and even a support forum if you have problems or questions.  The bandwidth and server space are pretty good too.

why do you need/want to make an imageboard?

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-12 12:45

I'd also have to recommend Wakaba. With little Perl knowledge many of Yotsuba small UI features can be added in.

Also, It's the most stable image board out there.
You can use Kareha, as well. And yes, Kareha 3 can be switched to imageboard mode, rather than textboard mode, making it very similar to Wakaba, sans the SQL.

Go with Wakaba. It's a breeze to set up and it sounds like it's just what you need/want.

There are two different types of<a href="http://www.wholesale-bridesmaiddress.com/">wholesale bridesmaid Dress</a>  you can buy, they are called  the <a href="http://www.wholesale-bridesmaiddress.com/">Bridesmaid Dresses</a> and

This is a common to think <a href="http://www.bridal-weddingdresses.com/column-wedding-dress_c13">column wedding dress</a> but it is not true,  if you can’t find the<a href="http://www.bridal-weddingdresses.com/strapless-wedding-dresses_c14">strapless wedding dresses</a>you are looking for but you find a  <a href="http://www.bridal-weddingdresses.com/tea-length-wedding-dresses_c15">tea length wedding dresses</a> one which you would like customized, ask the<a href="http://www.bridal-weddingdresses.com/spring-wedding-dresses_c16"> spring wedding dresses</a> tailor and see if s/he  can do <a href="http://www.bridal-weddingdresses.com/summer-wedding-dresses_c17">summer wedding dresses</a> for you. still using futaba/wakaba

kusaba x is working and goes if you want an image board. But you should at least know a last bit of PHP OR WANT TO LEARN CODING because you will probably need to tweak some shit. you will want to create a good menu (and not the fucking frameset) and you will want to change the style in order not to use the boring default style, so you will want to work with CSS(3!) and HTML and also the template engine.

If you are not speaking PHP or any used scripting language fluent, you will not want to write your own (if you do, you probably wouldn't ask here).

I am using kusaba x for a year now and I am constantly working at it, tweaking the code. The chan has been started as an experiment for me wanting to try out some stuff and also covering a niche that was uncovered in all the *chans.

Also you will want to think about what boards to create (depending on your niche). I started with creating 20 boards and remove/merge them still since then, because people take a look my chan and turn never coming back again because they don't understand my fucked up way of categorizing topics. So start with less boards and then add a new one once enough people beg for having it.

This thread is 6 years old. pretty sure the people talking about kusaba are dead. Assuming you haven't died yet, what's your chan's name?

kusaba x
But it's fucking horrible and Trevor should have never coded it to begin with. Also, the idea of creating an entire imageboard site complete with boards that have been done to death is ridiculous; the network effect of the larger sites will ensure that yours won't ever get traffic beyond a light threshold at best, and will probably end up deserted and then finally killed when the host cuts off service due to a flurry of CP posts.

There was a guy by the name of spoot that worked on a modification of Futallaby, but the site (http://saguaroimgboard.co.cc/) seems to be down. I don't understand why people go through the trouble to set up a website only to abandon it later. You could maybe try the e-mail address (spoot@saguaroimgboard.co.cc), that's about as close to a sane "modern" version of Futallaby as you can get without the trouble of doing it yourself.

Anything is better than Kusaba. Tinyboard is still coded by an asshole, though.

I've been playing around with futaba.php for a few hours trying to allow files in replies but couldn't get anything. Any of you know how I would get this to work.

Disregard this. I found a way.

Don't change these.
