Imageboards vs. Textboards

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-02 22:27 ID:NW577fjE

I'm going to go with textboards, even though there isn't a single good english one.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-03 0:28 ID:hyPtkLWz

Considering English textboards are mostly dead... yeah.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-03 7:49 ID:hyUvnGbR

I'm going to go with USENET instead.

textboards please.

text. as most people post crap images anyway.

Barely even decent, just because the 3 users there may be more eloquent than the masses we have here and as such by comparison make 4-ch SEEM like a good textboard, but in reality its a dead hole where the same 3 guys scare off every random visitor with their mittens faggotry.

At least it's not full of spam and trolls like the 4chan's textboards. Perhaps it's just you who is afraid to post on 4-ch.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-08 3:07 ID:tq56Qnnf

>>9
Not full of spam and trolls? Uh, about as useless as half of those threads there are, I'd say yes there is spam, not as much no, but thats just whats left from where the moderators discerned what spam they liked and what spam they hated, furthermore, I'm afraid to post on 4-ch because I'm afraid I'll be completely wasting my fucking time because no one EVER FUCKING GOES THERE.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-08 6:38 ID:SpE24Ny6

With this amount of traffic and the shitty interface, textboards fail.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-10 10:04 ID:CYr5Hxcj

Seriously, we need to promote and support the 2ch-style anonymous textboards :

Textboards have a lot of potential to do things that imageboards can't, but at the end of the day there's still about 20 people here and half of them are spamming.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-11 22:39 ID:faRY80Oy

>>10
And that's the fucking problem, people don't post because they're waiting for everyone else to suddenly post and the textboard is as active as /b/. If you posted then it'd make a fucking difference.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-12 2:21 ID:6xCCbwCt

I find myself seeing a post I made 2 days ago once in awhile, so image boards. I only come here when I'm banned from an image board and have no where else to go.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-14 23:04 ID:3RYmBlwE

>>14
Nobody wants to put effort into a post that nobody's going to read. On the other hand, an active board will have so much shit being posted that it will drown out and meaningful content.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-15 1:18 ID:jr8G1e5z

>>16
It's a matter of finding a balance, isn't it? However text boards are less suceptible to that drowning effect than imageboards since they offer much more permanence.

And yeah, it does require more activity from each user when the userbase is small.

Of course I think that maybe some of the problem stems from the fact that a lot of the people that at least have some pseudo-interest in textboards have spent most of their time - in regards to forums - using registration and the like. I think that the fact that the people posting are so used to having their name attached to the post they get worried about a possible backlash if their post isn't very good.

Of course, another issue is that maybe most of these people are the type of people that essentially have /b/ the way it is - the people that just lurk. Most of the image boards have a lot of people that lurk and not as many people that actually come out and post some good stuff. I don't know why that is. Personally, I never post on the image boards because I don't have much to contribute. I have much more to contribute in an arena like this (the text board) because text is something that is generated by the user, as opposed to most of the time being something that is found and uploaded.

>And yeah, it does require more activity from each user when the userbase is small.

Basically a perfect way to put it. I probably should try to contribute more to the textboards, because it would be nice to see them actually succeed as opposed to being about 1000 pages of "LOL COCKS" and spam like that. Maybe if more people posted the moderators might pay some more attention.

I'm not welcome there, my posts all get deleted and every thread I contribute to ends peacefully, and besides, motherfuck those stupid mittens loving faggots.

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-15 16:01 ID:W+jAUZ3u

That brings up some interesting topics. The whole point of an anonymous board is to get rid of the circle jerking you see in a regular forum. On the opposite end of the scale is the Something Awful forums. There, the posts generally have a high quality, with a lot of thought put in, but absolutely no one will take you seriously unless you registered half a decade ago and have been posting every day sucking your seniors' dicks.

Here, we don't have that problem, but there's all the desu-fags who really aren't interested in creating quality- they're just interested in ruining it for everyone else. They're the same kind of people who team-kill in online games, and they're with us to stay.

Meanwhile, a lot of people seem to be doing their best to get 4chan shut down. "Hey guys, let's DDoS a website! Let's harass some kid we won't like! Let's commit egregious copyright violations in seeming contempt for the original author/artist!" They seem to be trying, and eventually they will succeed.

Anonymity is a failure; it just doesn't scale socially. If a small community forms, how is it supposed to defend itself from glaringly obvious fucktards?

Named forums aren't that hot either, but they scale somewhat better. There's a reason why some interesting discourse goes on in large moderated newsgroups, but not large unmoderated ones.

How often does this lesson have to be repeated before people figure it out? "Eternal September" anyone?

It's interesting that you should mention SA. Reading it today, I agree that the posts are generally high quality, but I also think that a lot of the irreverent zaniness of its earlier days has been suffocated. In some ways, I think 4chan has some of the qualities SA had back then.

SA gave birth to numerous photoshop memes as All Your Base, tourist guy, and image macros in general. They used to be a major hub for filesharing. For a long time, they were considered the "center" of internet comedy. Then gradually they started charging for registration, and the rules for banning got more stringent. Periodically they have also closed it from viewing by unregistered users. This undeniably raised the quality of posts. The raised barriers to entry made them a walled-off community of sorts, isolating themselves more and more from the rest of the internet. However, I think this snuffed out the "spark" responsible for some of their most well-known work. I can't remember the last time they were the source of a popular fad.

Meanwhile 4chan with all its shit combos, failed gets, and catchphrase parrotting, is pumping out stuff like rickroll(RIP). I'd also like to say Chocolate Rain, but it's impossible to know if that would have become popular regardless of 4chan finding it.

So raising the bar can increase quality, but raise it too far or too broadly and you risk stifling creativity. I think a good balance is sticking to the illegal stuff as they are now and also spam. Spam including both advertisements and mass repeats of copypasta.

Agreed.

Honestly, though, I just wish that everywhere (with the exception of /b/) that the moderation would achieve levels at least better than what they are at now (lolz dn't ban me). I too post at SA (who doesn't, its like the illuminati), and see that the moderation level is high, which is why when I do post over there, I definitely try to think about what I am going to post and make sure that I do my best to an extent.

Of course, it does take a lot more people actually trying than lurking, too.

This place isn't all that different from SA. Sure, they may use bigger words and all that shit, but generally they tend to be somewhat stuck up and dicks. I've seen great threads on 4chan and other imageboards that were better or more interesting than half of the shit I've found on SA. And without the need for "omg i may get banne, let me make sure i suck cock or pander to their opinions in my post!"

And, to be honest, I've still found some smart and cool motherfuckers on 4chan and had great threads discussing pretty much everything. You get a few "hurr durr desu desu" faggots, but you just ignore them and eventually they really do go away. It's the retards who go "troll!" or respond to them AT ALL that fuck shit up.

Fags go there. It's all boring bullshit and the mods are all dicks.

Name: Anonymous 2011-12-13 12:25

Might as well ask here: what's the purpose of /jp/?
I was there when it was started but I never had any interest in anime shit anyways.
It says "otaku culture" but I also heard it was started as a place to post "touhou."
I'd directly ask /jp/ what they're about but supposedly their self-moderation is so strong I'd rather not waste my time posting meta-material.

I don't think you know what weeaboo means.
