Imageboards vs. Textboards

I'm going to go with textboards, even though there isn't a single good english one.

Might as well ask here: what's the purpose of /jp/?
I was there when it was started but I never had any interest in anime shit anyways.
It says "otaku culture" but I also heard it was started as a place to post "touhou."
I'd directly ask /jp/ what they're about but supposedly their self-moderation is so strong I'd rather not waste my time posting meta-material.
