Nintendo on top with rev?

Name: Top_Cat 2006-03-07 20:22

okay, don't just go shrugging this off with meatless anti-nintendo sentiments, the most supremely flawed logic i've ever seen came in the form of:
"the only way you can have any positive expectations of nintendo is to be a nintendo fanboy"

okay, so looking objectively at what the system has to offer makes me a fanboy, and it's NOT fanboyish to think that anything coming from nintendo will fail?

okay, here's what i see rev having going for itself.

1. the biggie: lower price point.

granted the price hasn't been announced, but it's being estimated at about $200 even if it's a bit higher at 250, you could get TWO of them for the cost of one xbox currently.

granted being $50 dollars less, didn't help the 64 or cube much, but here we're probably looking at a price difference of a couple hundred dollars. definitely signifigant.

i'm not good with names, but i remember somone big from nintendo talking about nintendo being a secondary system also bought by those who already have other systems, it's probably going to be priced to do so.

2. the controller.
if you havent taken a look look at it so far, go to nintendo.com and read the articles on it.

this is a big thing in two ways.

1. it doesn't scare non-gamers as much. this mean we get more NEW gamers buying it than probably the other two systems combined (especially with that price difference.

2. new contol method.
let's take an FPS, and throw it on this controller. let's see what i can think up here:

first it would be very good foor camera control, probably as precise as a mouse. the vertical angle of the controller. for turning horizontally, it'd probably be difficult to keep turning the contoller in circles as you run around, so just have it where the screen scrolls as you point it left or right, turn it further, faster scrolling, probably with some adjustable no-scroll wiggle room so you can make precise shots.

now, it doesn't just detect angle but movement as well. take your screen scroll and apply it top moving your character. move the controller forward, or towards the TV to to move foraward. further forward, faster movement, and just move the controller sideways to strafe.

don't forget vertical movement! lower the controller to crouch, move it up to jump. oh, and the controller even picks up rotation. need to change weapons? twist the controller to switch guns.

see what i've done here? the motion controller acts as 2 andalog sticks, and about 4 buttons, two of them can even be pressure sensitive, not not all 4. now that i've used up all the motion control, what more do we need? oh right, shooting and an action button. B and A respectively. and look at that! we even have a whole D-pad left over! this could have control options  to be used for weapon changes or movement if you just can't use motion control for them. all that, and we didn't even have to attach the nunchuck.

3. potential for 3rd party support.
IMO, this is the only reason nintendo's behind ANYONE. i don't think it's sony or microsoft nintendo's competeing with, but the third party developers making all the great games on those platforms.

this depends on sales almost entirely. i'm sure the first ting a developer worries about is how many copies they can sell, meaning they want the system with the most sales, and thus, the most potential customers. and if nintendo can get sales that bring third party developers back to thier aid, there really isn't anything i can think of that could stop them from ruling the industry again.

rev could move, it's (almost certainly) much lower price, and controller that's new and exciting to current gamers, and approachable looking and intuitive for the ininitiated. so far, there isn't much i can see that would prevent it from flying off shelves. if it achives that, third party support is almost a given.

i should be finishing up, maybe i'll speak of the competition in another post. later!

Nintendo on top

Name: Top_Cat 2006-03-10 11:49

Well, not many comments at all. makes me tink people are staying away from this one either for it being too long, or assumed as a troll.

let's look at what the other consoles have so far and why i think those advantages aren't signifigant enough to leave rev in the same position as the gamecube.

1. more graphical power.
first of all, the me point out that, to my knowledge, there is NO PRECEDENT AT ALL in all of videogame history of a more expensive and powerful console whinning out in sales for that reason. hell, the 64 and gamcube were less expensive AND more powerful, and it didn't help much against the playstations they were competing with. and then we have all the attempted copetition fo the game boy.

even if there were much to day it DOES count to be the most powerful in a set, the difference is far less noticeable with today's graphics. this set just started this gen,
but of the demonstrations are any indicator, most of what we're getting is small details that you can only even see when the camera is zoomed way in. your hardcore nitpick may go nuts, but not too ma y people are going to be able to tell from the gameplay.

2. HD? see point 1
okay, first off, let me point out that there's a neglected middle layer called ED, or enhanced defenition, which is already in gamecube, and will probably be in the rev. ED is essentially progressive scan if i remember right, and draws the whole screeen 60 times a second rather than 60 halves of the screen.
this means the image probably looks a lot smoother.
HD is higher resolution output, meaning a sharper picture.
have a 64 or playstation 1 kicking around? turn it on and check out your graphics. now look away and turn the sharpness down. those old graphics look better don't they? the poor sharpness blurs out the rough edges. HD as far as i can tell, is just a way of putting your TV back agead of the game system. this coming gen looks to be one step ahead of current standard TV's, which are probably going to be good enough to show all the detail, but just behind enough for the jaggies to be smoothed out.

how good things will ACTUALLY look aside, i think this gen will be selling HD more than HD sells this gen. meaning, p[eople won't be getting this gen's systems because of HD, people will be getting HD because of this gen's sytems. if you still don't understand, i'm saying more people will want HDTV AFTER they get thier next gen systems, rather than wanting the new systems for thier HDTV.

3. third party support.
okay, this is all sony has, and they've been doing well on it.
but if they lose it, ore even if the devs supply nintendo with equal amount of goodness, sony won't be the exclusive home to the majority of good games, and there will be no reason to get a ps3 over anything else.

as i stated first post, nintendo will probably be priced to sell, AND they have the exciting new controller going for them, they will probably make decent market penetration, and with good sales comes good third party support.

It's because it's an old topic and everyone has already gone through the situation with themselves and not the anonymous assholes of 4chan since first hearing about the thing and made up their minds on how it will go and why. I guess there's a level of (sometimes massively) varying degree of consideration for the matter but those who have taken it seriously without their coveted fanboy cap (hi videogame development staffs) usually come to the same conclusion. The system will most likely be the best home console ever, I mean, ever since ex halken (hey, is it odd or what, before he had left them to run nintendo their games were good, oh, though all of their releases done past melee (thanks melee) were done without sakurai so...) lead Iwata came in charge he's only been scoring hard, well, spare the micro, don't know why he put out that thing. I'm having a hard time placing it into words, but it deals with whats wrong with the cub, really the platforms are so similar, and who has been doing it pretty much the entire time since the 80's? Why the guys who've been at nintendo since the 80s! Maybe they've lost a little creative passion for the snes based graphical enhancement platforms? Maybe they wan't something new and fresh that can make them as excited about making vidoegames and making them more creatively like they were inspired with by the nes and snes hardware, or maybe even 64 depending on who you are, but again, a lot of these guys stop making videogames. Some like dear old sakurai get really disappointed by gaming and certain games (sequels if I remember correctly, oh, why hello melle, you were a shitty game indeed, I'd be pissed too if I were responsible for that pile of garbage) but I just feel sorry for him that due to fanboy blindness the game is somehow held as something playable and not just a big sloppy throw together of 3d fanservice, they managed to convince him to do a third with them. Oh but wait, the revolution console is where it is! I think he's going back and may be coming out with this version to correct the gameplay mistakes of the last one, while bringing out some heavy guns on playable features that the system we're focusing on provides. I won't go into those detail yet, but he is an example, over the course of recent time 3rd party members have been shitting themselves about the thing, and about now they have it, maybe they're playing games they're making right now and having fun or taking it to new levels in multiplay ability. Oh, did I mention the financial sucess of the ds established userbase, you know, developers really like money, I wonder, how many of these OG ds users(+60~400k DSL) we have today plan on getting the console already? No more extra money for connection cables, hate wands? Hate the game's wandplay? Boot up your double screened badass and download the consoles broadcast over the wifi, if the developer is any sort of decent or great one, you will be greeted with control in the same game with your 12 butotn+touchsense wireless pad, prefereably with two screens of information that would most likely only be beneficial for you to see, since you're not waving a wand around (or, for the first years, at a screen) but you'll probably see whatever you're playing as on the ds seen on the main screen, that is if you go into the view of it in the game and of course depends entirely on the game, but the ABILITY for gameplay applications that are there are very very exciting to those who like videogames, those who like making videogames and those who want to make videogames in the future. Would you rather make a game on the same dual analog stick 6/however many buttons on each side format, 2/4 players at most sparing online, or one where you can pit a set of 4 wandos to point around on a screen of activity that may or may not be able to be manipulated by anyone nearby with a powered on ds on download and play? Something like up to 16 I believe, oh and THEN there's internet on that, what sounds like the bigger gameplay experience? Which do you wish people did more coding for? Oh you want just 2 or 4 players only huh? Yeah it was pretty rad on the NES and the SNES and the 4 on the 64 was shit tons of fun, but they've been done before, we all had fun with it, but the kids instead of staying with the systems that had done it right already, buy whatever fixes up the graphics and does the exact same goddamn thing, but you know what? It really doesn't matter what the kids in america think when they see VIDEOgames instead of videoGAMES, it matters what the developers think, and most of these guys reside in japan, not in ughmerica. So while, the xbox620 and pzzxxx will get the same games on a nearly possibility exhausted playing format with prettier ability, the japanese will pump out some of the sickest gameplay in (if all goes well) a max of 20 player amount on one console without including internet, all wirelessly. Oh wait nevermind, nintendo is bankrupt, they're totally going out of business hard, really failing at videogames (laughing since those who "are doing videogames" are on 3rd generation clones of the system Nintendo made 15 fucking years ago) Oh and I'm breaking my sudden sarcasm for a second here, you said somewhere the n64 sold bad, it didn't sell bad at all, while the psx may have beaten it in sales here, and may have in japan (here's me doubting that in japan) it sold something like 60 mill units, has some of the best games ever made in existance for it and oh, the chinese still buy the thing, it's just a system in a controller now, but those dudes sure do love their sick ass graphics and must not care at all about gameplay huh? Uh oh! No one knows what china is about, if there are any chinese who read this board (doubt it, probably too busy playing their iQues) let us know what you think about higher res 3d, and all the extra programming that has to go in when you decide and include x thousand many more polygons and detection fields than before and whether or not it should be done instead of spending more time on game design, thanks.

Sorry, don't have a return key, how fucking hard is it to read linearly?

Name: Top_Cat 2006-03-11 2:42

seriously hard to read, but i did. tough i'm not entirely sure on what all is and isn't sarcasm. (if it wasn't sarcasm, what's so bad about melee? it had all the 64 version did, and then some.)

and that's a good point, most people probably already had thier projections already.

as for my comments on 64, i was mostly pointing out how better graphics don't sell systems like so many people think they do. i mean, it had about TWICE the processor power, but that didn't seem to matter at all.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-11 3:29

Melee, added totally statues, destroyed the gameplay by nerfing good characters, and making ass backwards physics, looked prettier. I had fun everytime I played the 64 version, I have never ever enjoyed playing Melee. I've been playing videogames since nes and 5 and whatever nths of an inch flppies (wish I still had them, and a drive, some good shit is on that format)

Not only twice the bits per cycle, but on much faster loading cartridges, like I said, it sold like mad. Only people who didn't have think of it negatively (people only owning psxes), everyone who has ever touched it has loved it.

My main point is this gc=xbox=ps2 (slight graphical differences, same format) == bored ass developers who have been doing it since 68165 and 6a05
Revolution console = new format (4 3dmotion wands+16 dses) == really excited developers who already have been focusing on doing new things since the advent of the DS, and also looking to continue on the financial success of the DS with a home console that can have connection between the two.

People developing on rev are looking at nothing but POSSIBILITY in game design.
People developing on xbox2nd and snescd the third are looking at a POSSIBLY exhausted medium for bringing a game to, and have to work really fucking hard to make their game unlike anything that has already been done on that format before (and already done better years ago by nintendo)

You wanted the projection right? I don't see the revolution console having the possibility to fail at this point, nes, snes, sms, genesis, maybe even pce10 (please please nintendo, nec's making something on that console right? give us the pc10 releases) onto your sd card off of the internet, into your favorite sd to gba adaptor and enjoyed in beautiful 256x192 completely portably, and onto your pc for further storage when you need sd room. Maybe ninty will even find a way to sly out an n64 emulator to make it playable by the ds, if they do the future will rock soooooo fucking hard, but of course they'd have to be super badasses to pull it off, I wouldn't doubt them since they made the original hardware (n64) and know it better than anyone else, but the accomplishment would make me piss my pants.

Melee is a great game, and it makes me shake my head when people bring tourneytard words like "nerf" to it.

First off, all that matters after the newness of the system wears off is the games.  That's it.  In order to get that third party support, they have to get that home penetration.  In order to get that home penetration, they need two things:  major advertising, and a kickass launch.

Advertising's not hard:  just spend the money.  Nintendo's got cash to spare, so it's time to "prime the pump" as it were.

Kickass launch is harder, because let's face it, Nintendo's launches have, aside from a Mario title, fucking sucked.  If they were any shade of smart, they'd come out with both franchise barrels blazing.  At launch, on day 1, have Mario, Smash, Starfox, Metroid and hell, why not Kirby or a Pokemon game all ready to go.  Start the show off by kicking the fucking door down and throwing in a grenade.  Don't start with like one good game like Mario, and 5 assorted garbage games like Waverace and Luigi's mansion.

There'll be time for that shit later, because here's the thing:  The casual players Nintendo wants aren't going to be getting it opening day.  They aren't going to get it for a while.  That means Nintendo's got time to deal with them later, let the advertising sink in.  Launch is the only time you pretty much have the undivided attention of the hardcore, so don't waste that opportunity with shit like Nintendogs II.  There'll be time for that later.

Once you get the home instertion, get third party support by any means neccesary.  You want to avoid another GCN at all costs.  You don't want all these new players you're going to get to start off by being burned by your company, do you?  Because that's what the Cube was, a huge burn.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-11 12:48

Nintendo has had an unfortunate tendency to rely on 1st party and close 2nd party companies, even if they suck (Acclaim, Midway).  Meanwhile, Sony and MS get all the "new, innovative, independent" third parties that made the NES days great.  Sure they still have strong 1st and 2nd party titles as well, but Nintendo seems sorely lacking in that area with its last few consoles.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-11 17:44 (sage)

hey, nigger >11, melee is not a great game, it is not even a good fucking game, learn what a videogame is, learn what a well executed videogame is. useless "collectibles" and higher res graphics with a destruction of a previously balanced system of GAMEPLAY. Do stop assuming because you missed the 64 completely that this "melee" hold even two shits against the monstrous gameplay wind that is super smash brothers. You're completely fucking wrong, saying melee is a great game is proof you do not know what a videogame is, I highly suggest you stop playing them, because when you demand shitty uninspired sequels, you piss off Masahiro Sakurai, a lot.

Name: Top_Cat 2006-03-12 0:07

okay, seriously, you have got to get the stick out of your ass when it comes to melee. you're giving me the impression that you were very attached to owing with ness, and now that he isn't broken anymore, you'll have nothing to do with the game.

melee feels a lot smoother and faster. and i have trouble enjoying the first game anymore because of how much slower and jerky it feels.

>>11
they've been pretty secretive, but it seems they dropped a hint at maybe metroid prime 3 at launch.

and come to think of it, hasn't it been relatively quiet from nintendo in general? we've got zelda coming, and that's all as far as games it seems lately. think they may be preparing for that strong launch?

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-12 1:07

>>14
actually ness wasn't that great in the 64 version, not sure what you're getting at, poor kid got stomped all over the place

the game is unbalanced, play of the game has become broken, the 64 got it correct the first time, why the second? or rather, why the shitty second?

fox furry twins, luigi, fire emblem twins, oh and how bad kirby got the shaft, its good to see pikachu and samus toned down but link, young link, and zelda are the pits of that fucking strainwreck, the only good character they added in was game & watch.

I don't care what is "faster" I only care about the fact that when I come in hitting a guy, I'm not the one getting damage from a tiny ass limb that somehow hit my fiercely portruding one and stopped my attack, or better yet grabs me? yeah, I automatically stopped all my motion, graphic being on theirs until the fucker pushed z, and there's me walking away from the cub, disappointed as always, off to play better games. And everyone else I know is so totally about that game, they can really agree with your point that melee is somehow anywhere near as good, fun, and repeatedly playable as super smash brothers. There are at least 17 full 4 player games of melee going on in my area at any given time! I can't walk out in the streets without hearing about the latest sitting of melee and how so incredibly enjoyable it was. Something I'd never seen happen with the 64 smash brothers and games like goldeneye, as obviously they suck so much and werent done correctly then so of course we have to make a new platform and try it again, fucking lol.

Get. The. Fuck. Out.
I play in alot of Melee tournaments.  I'm not any GOOD, but I have fun.  Who fucking cares about fucking hit priorities in smash brothers?  You pick a character, you fuck around with your friends or some players, throw some items, have a good time.  No one ever says the words "unbalanced" or "tiers", no one fucking cares that much.

Here's the difference:  I sit down with a bunch of friends and have a blast with a party/fighting game hybrid that looks great and has tons of different things to do.  You complain about tourneytard bullshit, take the game way too seriously, and probably get called a gigantic faggot the second you get out of earshot.  Get the fuck out of a good thread.  Make your own whiny bullshit Smash thread.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-12 23:24 (sage)

Yet, I'm not the one who goes to any tournaments for videogames, but you do, for a shit game. Do I care what retards say about me and too scared to say in front of me, where the caring level doesn't really change that much, unless I'm not doing something better.
Its not about priorities, you hit people in the game and just about everytime you can just grab out of it, its annoying. I don't know where you come from (though I imagine you're making it up, oh wait, college kids probably love the shit, now that I think about it, dumb ass adults still going to school because they don't know shit themselves, right. remember the part where I said I don't care what such people think, it's quite fucking true, otherwise, I wouldn't post, I'd let you live with the blissful ass idea of yours that melee is playable)

Not going anywhere until you understand it fails, no one plays it nearly as much as the predecessor, there's a fucking reason for that. Maybe if you'd just realize it's shit and stop trying to defend tha fallacy of it being a damn game this could be a revolution console discussion thread instead, but even then, things already discussed by people who don't play melee, they only play games that are good, and by being disappointed with these hack ass new releases, have had ample time to take into consideration the machine, so even the thread topic is worthless so really the only important matter that has to be adressed is this, as you have so obviously demonstrated by responding with the classic gtfo line every post instead of trying to continue the op's discussion, and either accepting that melee sucks, or keep to yourself that you and 3 retarded college people just love to sit around the cub for some reason. It's something you have to understand, there was no need for the goddamn gamecube and all the owners are ever so pissed about the lack of titles, oh but wait melee is supposed to be this totally awesome game with shittons of replayability like smash brothers huh? Oh don't you think you shitheads would be satisfied with it, being so damn great and all, because smash brothers IS great, and you say melee is better. Fucking whining about no titles and you didn't maybe wonder they had their fun with the "zomg3d" platform during their last system? I mean, really it was only made because sony and microsoft had made however much more powerful systems, and the easily swayed by numbers consumer falls in line, like they are ever so predicted to do so by the guys making the money, and with the obvious predictability of man in regards to videogames comes the lack of necessity for creativity. Every other day on the imageboard "why the hell do video game suck these days?" and then people, I don't even know what they're about bring in "man its the same" but I guess it is because they must not have used the ability of taste definition and research to find the numbers of programs that were made before, or really it's just because they do not have the capacity in them to appreciate them, not high res or enough bit depth, aspects of the formulas of the gameplay design, not fitting the mold lines that are set in stone today by so many developers going over and over and over it with their versions of the program through the years. In essence it is the matter of the sequel itself that causes this, for any all games and variants from outside development teams, and then people complain about them being the same, well gee maybe if you didn't demand the same and being a bunch of money dropping dominoes maybe there wouldn't be so little deviation or exploration in the world of digitally interactive entertainment? or rather, the focus of the direction being making it as enjoyable as possible over ALL instead of as the same as the last one possible (oh with plenty extras thrown in of course, that always makes up for 0 gameplay, yeah i was just absolutely fucking psyched to get all the coins i'd need for those trophies)

Name: Top_Cat 2006-03-12 23:46

okay, i'm sure you're aware of how a good game can be lost on those who play it with the wrong attitude. variety and balance oppose each other, and melee has a lot of variety. it would have taken a long ass time to balance that game. personally i like it for the chaotic nature of the variety of characters and items, probably along with everyone else who likes it. plus the appeal of matching the different characters against each other. so lay off those that like melee, or you're no better than those who berate games that go outside the box and thier fans.

segwaying back on topic, it looks like nintendo's kicking these hard-formed ideas of what is and isn't a videogame the hell out of thier minds. brain training, nintendogs, electroplanton, animal crossing, seems like they're getting more and more games out that some people are reluctant to even CALL videogames.

tl;dr

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-13 7:49

Yes, god forbid it takes more than a few lines to get a (correct) point across. Whatever is easiest to comprehend is what I support, fuck if it is correct or taken deeper into consideration than most by one who has vast experience in the field. Oh well, you still don't know what videogames are since it is ever so hard to read a single array which is what all text is no matter how many page breaks you put in the shit. Guess it is just a lost cause considering you as an individual, but the lurkers who love to read will get the benefit, while you play/dont play (but claim to still play shitty) games just because they were released.

Yeah, they're swaying from the idea of the videogame, but only brain training, electroplankton, and daigasso have been quality releases. While it is totally different, ugh at animal crossing, not a good direction, its like the simple in a way precurser to the dog game. Deleting the competition in the game but still keeping the interactivity...it's an interesting approach but not a very pleasant one any way you go through it. At least with eletroplankton and daigasso you're making music, and at least with brain training you may or may not be learning something, ac and dogs are quite pointless, but I guess those who love pointlessness without challenge will be sure to enjoy it.So long as they resume their current paused status on producing enjoyable titles, I'll have no problem but since the incarnation of the idea of this interactive needlessness they've been faltering hard, and thus, such releases will get quite a distasteful treatment from myself, and those who are much like myself, you know, been playing videogames most if not all of their lives, expect gameplay over stupid collecting and text reading, and will never be happy with the companies or the people buying the games that do not fufill this goal until the matter of gameplay becomes represented by SOMEONE inhouse at the first party.

So now, everyone is looking to this new system to correct the obvious err of the cub, in that 0 gameplay was provided for it. Iwata in preparation, dissolves and rearranges the development groups instated by the teams themselves and yamauchi back when they were formed. To me this seems like an act of preparation at a level that wasnt quite taken when they went and did the cub, solely to compete with higher processing and graphical powers that were brought out needlessly and competed with needlessly and unreadily as so demonstrated by the titles put out for the system, and the lack of gameplay related creative genius inside that previous systems released had demonstrated back when the development groups were still excited about 3d, back when it was still new and not just higher res.

Really it's quite obvious Nintendo is sitting on top of their game with this rev, but it's not until it is released, and what all these differently made up teams come up with will we be able to see the effects of this fact, as such there really isn't much of a point in speculating it at all so, quit fucking talking, quit ending discussion, dumbly qualified negligence, and all of the above.
