Hard drive recovery

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-25 15:05 ID:c3aj4Nvk

My hard drive wont spin for reasons unknown to me so I figure that its finished and not going to work anymore. I would like to know if its possible to recover the data on it and if so how can I do it?

Sometimes the drive is stuck.  As long as you're sure that the drive is otherwise dead, try each of the following steps, with testing of the drive between each step:

1. Take the drive in hand and spin it back and forth vigorously in the plane of the drive and platters.  This will use the inertia of the platters to move them independently of the casing.

2. Put the drive in a plastic bag, suck out the air fairly well, and put it in the freezer for a couple of days.  Take it out and leave it in the bag while it warms up to room temp.

3. Open the drive to expose the platters.  Carefully move the spindle in order to move the platters without touching them directly.  Replace the cover after you're done.  PREPARATION:  Make sure your hands are washed and AIR DRIED (do NOT use a towel) after rolling up your sleeves.  Hold the drive on its side to minimize the chance of a piece of dust (even a liquid droplet from your breath) landing and sticking to the platters.

If you end up going through each of these steps and the drive still doesn't spin up, then it's dead.

Youre a jackass.
Besides, I want to recover the data on it, I already know its dead.

I'm a jackass, eh?  Good luck recovering your data.  /logout

yes it is possible. go to a data recovery specialist. they cost from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand.

Even a retarded inbred monkey with its brain in its ass would have realized their help is not wanted here from all the 'REDCREAM IS A GIGANTIC FAGGOT' posts. Please don't feel an urge to /login again.

ORLY?  In that case, I'm sticking around.  A few chanfags with excessive time in their hands does not constitute an army, a majority, even a significant minority.  It's just a couple of chanfags.  No biggie.

Also, "retarded inbred monkeys" don't have WILLPOWER, which is a concept that I'm sure you're fairly ignorant of.

If the data is not worth thousands of $$$, don't bother.

If so, >>6

Apparently I'm important enough to tell all of that to.  Please, continue your exposition.

Yea I looked at a few sites and the lowest price I saw was $500, which is ridiculous. Why does it cost so damn much? All they need to do is replace the circuit board to get the power working again.

Important isn't the right word, its just by using a name you have made yourself a target because you are so easy to spot.... its not like we give a shit about any other aspect of your 'life' other than for us to laugh at. Even people you offer help to would rather you just GTFO and let them suffer with their problem than actually have to talk to you or associate with you. Maybe only weirdos post on 4chan, but it takes a truly sad pathetic loser to get an ego trip from being insulted here, or maybe you are just so desperate for the company that you can't let go.

Who cares.

Who cares?  Apparently, you do.  Please, continue explaining all this to me in even more detail.

Good job on acting like you are the only one 'enjoying' this... mind you I suppose you have to try and put on a brave face and not show your true feelings about losing your dignity here, it has to suck being forced back to anonymity by a bunch of 4chan freaks, especially after such a valiant effort at defending yourself. You seem to enjoy helping people here, I wonder how much fun it could be knowing that noone wants it.

There is a programme available from http://www.grc.com called SpinRite.  I think it costs about $90, but it is effective.  It may take a while, but as long as the drive isn’t clicking, it should completely recover the drive.

Really?  That's fairly interesting.  However, I feel that I've missed a few nuances in what you've said.  Could you go into a little more detail?  I fell that I'm learning under your tutelage.  Thanks.

I've used SpinRite in the 1990s and found it to be a useful tool.  However, if the drive is not accessible in the first place, what will SR do for you?  It still requires the drive to be spinning, right?  I mean, SR doesn't have drive-spinup capability, does it?

That reminds me:  We're talking about IDE or SATA, right?  It's possible to set a SCSI controller to not spinup a drive.  Just covering my bases, here.
