Why do people buy LCD monitors?

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-25 6:51

What's so fun about massive ghosting, distorting colors depending on what angle you look at the monitor, a single crappy resolution, dead pixels, etc.?

Why don't people just buy excellent CRTs?

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-25 7:09

the fun thing is that todays lcds are much better than your antique distorted dreamworld opinion.
get a good, fast one (around $400 for 19") and don't even have ghosting while playing fast FPS, can lounge in every position in your chair and still get the same colors, and not have dead pixels (or a maximum of 1 or 2 which i personally don't even notice in everyday use)
plus lcds have a generally much sharper picture and are SUPERIOR in almost every aspect, ya rly.

I, for one, have never seen a LCD like that, and I have seen quite a lot of LCDs in my days.

Because people is stupid. It's the same reason why they like Vista or Apple stuff. OMG IT LOOKS LIKE STAR TREK!

The resolution is fine, the colors/contrast/angles are great too, you just have to watch the panel types. TN panels are for gaming, basically they're fast, but have worse color/contrast/angle compared to *VA panels. The characteristics are vice versa for those.
Also, LCDs don't look like a huge, bulky piece of shit.

massive ghosting
Strange, I must be immune to these effects...

distorting colors depending on what angle you look at the monitor
I rather prefer to watch it from straight ahead. How about you?

a single crappy resolution
1600x1200 on a 15" is crappy? Wow, the standards sure are high now!

dead pixels
I've had this screen for about three years. No dead pixels.

Why don't people just buy excellent CRTs?
Let's see now:
1. LCDs weigh less
2. LCDs take up less space
3. A good LCD is extremely nice to watch photos taken with a digital camera on.
4. LCDs emit less radiation (might be an issue to some)
5. LCDs look better. Seriosly. Ever looked at a CRT from the side? ZOMG FRIDGE!

1,2,3,4,5: By your powers combined, I am win!

They take less room which is important when considering an office deployment, power consumption, they arn't hideous unlike CRT they don't break your back moving them unlike CRT, so on so forth. old CRT is old however if you have lots of space and never need to move it, go ahead buy your 22" CRT tablebreaker.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-25 13:06

my 22" crt monitor weighs over 130lbs

They have different strengths.  CRT's strengths are in image quality.  LCD's strengths are not, other than whatever is a quality of being a digital display (discrete pixel access and screen geometry) - but then it shares those qualities with other digital display technologies that look better than LCD.

LCD is auto-fail unless you need thin/light/cheap.  Don't get me wrong, though - lots of people need thin/light/cheap and don't give a shit about image quality.

CRTs have been known to arrive on shelves at speeds in excess of 70MPH.

welcome back, Anonymous. It's been awhile

I'm not a gamer and at 40 my eyesight had degraded fom 20/15 with unreal night vision to needing specs.
I loved my huge hernia making CRT's till I read a good LCD offered sharper type and was easier on the eyes. Bought a good Viewsonic and never looked back.
Many of you use CRT's with gamer videocards so the color you *could have realized* with a Matrox video card is traded for gaming priorities.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-25 16:47

Large LCDs, I think, are much better for hacking on code.

I was blinded in one eye 24 years ago. Eyestrain gets to be a factor as time goes on. My new high contrast LCD enables me to work far longer without a break than did my 22" CRT.

With modern lcds, you only notice the effects of ghosting when it involves moving contrasting colours. Examples include scrolling a webpage or something like pong. You only notice it when you're ACTIVELY LOOKING for it. You DO NOT notice scrolling in 3D games - and my LCD has 21ms response time.

The biggest argument I accept against LCD is colour reproduction. In that case, I'd just dual screen a primary LCD and a secondary CRT to do colour work. If you're playing a game or watching a movie, it doesn't matter at all.

I don't play games, much, what really matters is scrolling webpages, I want to be able to read as I scroll.  Every millisecond lost is a distaster.

What the fuck you stupid faggot, I'm not trolling.  I got really infuriated at some retard on some message board asking about ghosting and latencies for the five millionth time, so I decided to start a constructive discussion on the pros and cons of LCDs.

Of course, these asshats with differing opinions (what the hell are they doing on my Internet anyway?) came along and destroyed it all, I hate you!

PROTIP: World4ch is News for Trolls, Stuff with flaimbait.

By all means, post what is on your mind but do not expect every reply to be meaningful. The beauty of anonymous posting is that people will post everything that is on their minds. This is good because the quality of the discussion is dependant upon the quality of each individual post and not the reputation of the poster. Every post is judged by its own merit and not by the reputation of the poster.

So there are a number of 'lulz' posts. Most will disregard it and discuss what is worth discussing. So just chill when posting to World4ch. Why don't you join us and troll for noobs. Also

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-29 2:03

Ive also been liek ZOMG, LCD IS CRAP LOLOL but then i bought one because absolutely nobody sells crts anymore(except for crappy 3 year old ones) and wow, wtf is with those colours? Theyre excellent. I wanted to buy a crt because everyone told me colours on lcd look bad but hell, no, that lcd has better colours than any other monitor ive seen in my life. Of course, only due to x-black screen or however that technique is called. The reflections arent much of an issue though, as long as light comes from the side, not the front.
I also didnt notice any ghosting. The angle is the only disadvantage it has. Bright colours invert at a certain angle. A very light grey on a white screen becomes white on a light grey screen.

in before tl;dr.

I have a CRT at home and I use LCDs at school.   I can't tell much difference, and I don't notice ghosting there either

A $25 22" CRT on craigslist can be hard to pass up though, especially when electricity is pennis/kwH

enjoy playing games not at native resolution blurry as shit. ever tried playing starcraft on an lcd? rofl, what a joke

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-02 6:00

what are you talking about? I have a 19 inch lcd with native res of 1280/1024. I play games at 640/480, 800/600, 1024/768 and 1280/1024 and they all look fine to me. I play red alert 1 at 800/600 and it looks fine to me. I play red alert 2 at 1024/768 and it looks fine to me.

I wanted to buy an LCD. I had a very good dell 19" CRT but it was too heavy to move around and I was sick of it. I got a Samusng Syncmaster 205BW beacuse it has HDCP and was a decent price, about £240. 1680x1050 with my 8800GTS is perfect. I've also had no dead pixels.

I bought a Sony SDM-HS95P @ Fry's. It was a store model and it was on display for about 7 months. I'm sure it has been "on" for more than 500+ hours!!  O_o
Anyways, I'm really surprised that there is only one dead pixel. I cant really tell unless the screen goes black. Which is almost never. I don't hate CTR it's just that college dorms are small and i needed to get a LCD because of the space.

Don't change these.
