How do I learn Linux

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-28 20:22

For one who has never touched Linux, how do you learn and how long does it take to become comfortable?

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-28 20:42

Just install it. It's not some exotic thing you have to study for. Just install it and use it.

i suggest first trying out some live cd distributions.  knoppix is a good one.  these run completely in ram off the cd, and will help you get a feel for the operating system and choose which distribution to install when you get to that point.  also, there are numerous places on the internet to help you along, with varying degrees of newb-friendliness.

It depends. Like any system, it will take several years for you to be a whiz, zipping around doing stuff.

Many people probably learned it the same way (like I did); by installing over and over and practicing all the time. You'll find new things you want to do and you'll figure them out.

Hardware support can be frustrating, but in general, it's as good as the coders can get with the limited information available.

While it's a simple answer, >>2 is right. Just install it and play around. Break your machine. Reinstall.

>Many people probably learned it the same way (like I did); by installing over and over and practicing all the time. You'll find new things you want to do and you'll figure them out.

I've used it since 98, and I basically agree with this, except I'd mention the additional step of reading HOWTOS, FAQS and googling.

You'll fuck shit up, and you'll put it back together again; I had fun with this for a few years and now I can go months without thinking about what OS I use.

It's not that hard, but it is frustrating at times and you do have to read shit. Hell, if you grab knoppix and confine yourself to KDE you may not, on the other hand.

I've heard gaming sucks on Linux. The answer, from what I've read is to get a dual-boot system to use Windows to run games. How easy is this to do?

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-29 4:39

>>9
Gaming sucks on Linux because:
- How do I ran Quake 3? There are almost no games.
- There's mediocre driver support from nVidia which is outstanding by Linux standards, and like no support from ATi.
- Linux generally sucks for sound, and don't get me started on the flaky drivers.
- Linux isn't exactly the best for gaming for a number of reasons and I don't know if performance will be that great.
- I don't know if they can use the newest GPU features with OpenGL from Linux, maybe they can, maybe not.
- Everything is a mess and you have to hack your way to do everything. Gamers can't do this, so companies won't bother.

Your troll would have worked better if you hadn't used Quake 3 as an example of a game that isn't available for Linux. PROTIP: everything that id churns out gets ported to Linux, and eventually released under the GPL.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-29 7:33 (sage)

>>11
(I think he meant that Quake 3 is the only game available)

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-29 7:41 (sage)

>>12
(Then it still doesn't work well because there are also Quake 1 2 and 4, Doom 1 2 and 3, Unreal Tournament 1, 2003, 2004, Neverwinter Nights, Tribes 2, Alpha Centauri, RTCW... the list goes on.)

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-29 7:45

>>13
All those games suck though, except Quake and Quake II.

The only hope is Wine (Cedega is evil, like Red Hate), and I can't get much performance out of it.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-29 7:49

>>11
It IS available for Linux, I used it because asking how do I run Quake 3 is a meme in Slashdot which means everyone's still playing Quake 3 in the absence of other games.

>>13
Wow, you've managed to list a dozen games across a decade! You're getting close to what's released for Win32 in a month!

Um, They are fucking harder than windows, and Linux is waaaaay more convoluted than what was done with OS X, believe that.

I hate windows to death but I know that it is far easier to use than Linux is. Walking into UNIX without some knowledge is asking for some trouble. One wrong command line or one necessary file out of place, say goodbye to a working os and hello to a re-install. I should know, I use a UNIX based OS.

Using Linux, or any UNIX based OS, without knowledge is like walking through a minefield without a mine detector. With knowledge, a user can own unparalleled.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-01 0:02

>>1
if you really want to learn linux, i recommend lfs  (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org).  if you can get it working, you'll know pretty much everything you'll ever /need/ to know, and be able to figure out the rest easily enough.  if you can't get it working, you'll get the opportunity to try it all over again.  fun!

of course, this assumes you have the patience to catalogue all your hardware, follow lots of instructions and compile everything from source.  if you can't stomach anything without shiny menus and someone else to do all the work, just pick a distro and install it.  they're all pretty much the same when you're just starting out.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-01 0:10

>>43
They're only harder if you're incompetant. Also, I should know as well, because I use a UNIX-based OS. I doubt this user is going for a fucking command line OS or some shit anyway, they'll probably end up with SUSe OSS or something.

I'm comfortable on many popular OS'es, tho there's still some I want to try out like Irix. Dang SGI machines are sooo expensive...

Last I checked, lack of knowledge=incompetent. Notice, all I said was that the guy needs some knowledge before going into Linux

Definition of Incompetent:

incompetent |inˈkämpətənt; i ng-| adjective not having or showing the necessary skills to do something successfully

Just FYI...

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-02 0:50

>the guy needs some knowledge before going into Linux

Not really. Everyone I know who uses Linux (including myself) just installed it and figured things out as they went. You'd be surprised how little you really need to touch the command line when you aren't trying to do obscure things.

You CAN learn that way, it's just not efficient to do so. I mean, I don't even really need GUI if I know the command lines. Playing around with it just builds a dependacy on GUI by itself.
