How do I learn Linux

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-28 20:22

For one who has never touched Linux, how do you learn and how long does it take to become comfortable?

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-28 20:42

Just install it. It's not some exotic thing you have to study for. Just install it and use it.

i suggest first trying out some live cd distributions.  knoppix is a good one.  these run completely in ram off the cd, and will help you get a feel for the operating system and choose which distribution to install when you get to that point.  also, there are numerous places on the internet to help you along, with varying degrees of newb-friendliness.

It depends. Like any system, it will take several years for you to be a whiz, zipping around doing stuff.

Many people probably learned it the same way (like I did); by installing over and over and practicing all the time. You'll find new things you want to do and you'll figure them out.

Hardware support can be frustrating, but in general, it's as good as the coders can get with the limited information available.

While it's a simple answer, >>2 is right. Just install it and play around. Break your machine. Reinstall.

I lol'd thanks to your big sense of humour, good sir.

I've used it since 98, and I basically agree with this, except I'd mention the additional step of reading HOWTOS, FAQS and googling.

You'll fuck shit up, and you'll put it back together again; I had fun with this for a few years and now I can go months without thinking about what OS I use.

It's not that hard, but it is frustrating at times and you do have to read shit. Hell, if you grab knoppix and confine yourself to KDE you may not, on the other hand.

write your own distro.

I've heard gaming sucks on Linux. The answer, from what I've read is to get a dual-boot system to use Windows to run games. How easy is this to do?

Gaming sucks on Linux because:
- How do I ran Quake 3? There are almost no games.
- There's mediocre driver support from nVidia which is outstanding by Linux standards, and like no support from ATi.
- Linux generally sucks for sound, and don't get me started on the flaky drivers.
- Linux isn't exactly the best for gaming for a number of reasons and I don't know if performance will be that great.
- I don't know if they can use the newest GPU features with OpenGL from Linux, maybe they can, maybe not.
- Everything is a mess and you have to hack your way to do everything. Gamers can't do this, so companies won't bother.

Your troll would have worked better if you hadn't used Quake 3 as an example of a game that isn't available for Linux. PROTIP: everything that id churns out gets ported to Linux, and eventually released under the GPL.

(I think he meant that Quake 3 is the only game available)

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-29 7:41 (sage)

>>12
(Then it still doesn't work well because there are also Quake 1 2 and 4, Doom 1 2 and 3, Unreal Tournament 1, 2003, 2004, Neverwinter Nights, Tribes 2, Alpha Centauri, RTCW... the list goes on.)

All those games suck though, except Quake and Quake II.

The only hope is Wine (Cedega is evil, like Red Hate), and I can't get much performance out of it.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-29 7:49

It IS available for Linux, I used it because asking how do I run Quake 3 is a meme in Slashdot which means everyone's still playing Quake 3 in the absence of other games.

>>13
Wow, you've managed to list a dozen games across a decade! You're getting close to what's released for Win32 in a month!

Way to discredit yourself by knowing Slashdot memes.

learning Linux is foolishness. Linux is the old way, B-TRON is the way that is modern, deep and reliable. With B-TRON the learning is not, you just know.

B-TRON is modern
B-TRON is simple
B-TRON is superiority to dead OSes

It looks like it's still pretty beta, but if it's anything like the R5 that I tried out a year or two ago, it'll be awesome.

Built on FreeBSD; play with the included KDE as long as you want, but when you want to explore further, there's a Real Unix Descendent underneath.

Is this a good or a bad thing?

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-30 5:56

He probably means, it's better than Linux since there are no fanboys.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-30 5:58

>>25
either, depends on your point of view.
>>26
>it's better than Linux since there are no fanboys

not a state of affairs I expect to last for long, I'm afraid. ;_;

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-30 6:02

There are BSD fanboys. They're the ones who always show up in any Linux related topic to troll about Linux geeks not having girlfriends.

Um, Unix based systems, especially some flavors of Linux, are NOT just plug and play. If you don't know what you are doing, You are in trouble.

's still the best way to learn linux.  screw something up horribly.  get into trouble as a result.  don't do it again.  repeat as necessary.
