a couple of years ago I reformatted an old computer and installed DOS and win98 on seperate drives then put an old soundblaster card in for sound. for that exact purpose.
Just look in your local paper or garage sale for computers which are really cheap and compare their stats to the ones that were recommended for the game when it was released.

qemu + ms-dos 6.0 (grab the source code here: http://dis.4chan.org/read/prog/1160938869)

sound is fine, you can change it and shit to something else if you  dont like your current setting
increase the speed (makes more cpu usage but games play smooth as anything)

default i think is like 3000? put it to about 10000

I change dosbox to be 8000+ frameskip 3 on my duron 800. It runs most dos action games at that setting very well

i would use a virtual machine. Microsoft Virtual Machine 2k4 is available free from their website, so you could install dos (or even some flavors of linux, like redhat) on it. but for M$ haters, theres many, many virtual machine programs out there.

or you could spend like 20-50 bucks on ebay. your choice.
a golden-age gaming machine would probobly have a 333-500mhz processor, 128mb of ram, and a 8gb hard drive. video card that supports DirectX 5 is a plus, but not 100% required. google Grim Fandangos system requirements and you'll probobly get a good idea of what you need if you x1.5 those specs.

Okay, sure. i put it in your local junkyard, a la animal crossing. go there now, you'll find it if you look hard enough. course, >>11, you better hurry as someone else can take it too.

Just make a dos partition and dual boot. No need to use a crappy old seperate pc.
I have never had any trouble running games in dosbox. I think you need to give it another try.

Heh I got my old p1 set up with DOS 6.22, with a TNT2 (they have Ballsy support for VESA 2.0 which is what all the DOS games were written in) and some dodgy ESS soundcard.

It works oh so well, and the only SINGLE FUCKING GAME THAT DOESNT WORK OUT OF ALL OF THEM, is Tyrian

*cries*

Zdoom or jdoom. You can thank me later.

Do people seriously still use emulators?

It's less time consuming to pay retail and allow these corporations to decide the controller layout instead.

He told a joke. My head exploded into confetti because laughter wasn't enough to express my feelings that are now spilling like blood all over my under-aged children who wanted to know why daddy won't wake up. You might say "Who was phone"? But don't be silly. Cell phone users are too dumb to find this website.
