don't start with gentoo, that's something that gentoo people only say. best advice, dive right in, have a normal win machine or whatever you are used to near by for googling internet problems, once your networking is working(if it doesn't work out of the box) only use the linux for 6 months
That's about the learning curve. After that you will see random .Xauthority errors and still no how to instantly fix them and shit. Pretty cool

linux is free software. This means:
1. you can use it for any purpose
2. redistribute the software
3. make changes to the software
4. publish the changes that you made.
you are allowed to sell free software for any price.
an example of free software being sold is audacity http://audacity.sf.net - the audio editing software.
Windows software is proprietry. It doesn't even allow the first freedom of free software. When you get a copy of an OEM version of windows, that licence is only valid for the computer it came on. Windows vista will require drm. you are not even allowed to make major hardware changes to your computer without letting microsoft know about it.
Books are great, you may find the internet to be a sometimes frusterating source of information when it comes to these things.
The best way of course is to also just through yourself into it, grab a distribution and get going. If you know how to partition a hardrive, you can probably figure it out from there.
Years ago I started with Debian, it still remains my favorite. A lot of people have a problem with the installer (probably because there are so many options), but I've always thought it was the best I'd ever used. If you get confused with debian, don't be afraid to just choose the default options, you can learn them later.

Yeah debian based distros are taking the hell over. Gentoo is going to die down to just a few select nerds who have sooo much time that they can sit and wait for a program to emerge and build from source to not see a preformance difference. When I want/need a program, I expect it now, not in 15 minutes, not in a half hour, not in a freaking DAY as the case may be.
Emerge doesn't actually teach you anything other than "emerge vim" oh wow guys, I learned everything there is about that...
yeah right no different than apt-get. Some users will claim performance differences, and I'm sure Gentoo is a little bit faster when benchmarked, but is that barely there increase in speed worth not having your multimedia keys perfectly configured out of the box like they now often are with distros like Ubuntu, etc? Fuck, you could at least switch from gentoo to Arch and install i686 packages. There I am pretty confident that the home user won't see the diff between his packages built with emerge and the 686 ones from the Arch repos.

don't use gentoo for the minimal speed increase you can get, use it for portage.

Nothings stopping you with debian from downloading the source packages and compiling them anyway. With most apps you can download and compile the source off apt-get and still enjoy all the benefits

That's true, but debian runs on practically everything doesn't it

I'm tired of Debian "dev" packages, and packages compiled with faggot flags, I'm also tired for having to run a debian command to compile a kernel on Debian for nothing, I'm also tired of having to compile things in modules just for Debian to blowjob them F**K Debian

Sourcemage usr?
pity they had to fork, i liked the original name better.
and, hey OP, if you want to learn linux with minimal distro-bias, go with a more barebones distro like Slackware. it was pretty much THE vanilla linux flavor back when i used it. i think that's still the case.
