How to teach yourself programming?

Name: Anonymous 2014-02-17 23:44

Hey everyone. First time posting here. I am after pursuing a career in programming and I want to start by learning Java.
What do you reckon it's the best way to go, considering I'm still 2 years away from Uni. Books, tutos, online stuff?
I also want to learn PHP, C++ and MySQL in the future.
Thank you all very much.

Start with Codeacademy. All languages are pretty much the same, and this will help you get started learning a language without having to download an IDE or some shit, and each exercise is interactive so you get immediate feedback. Choose a language on the site and stick with it to the end of the course.

Please pursue a more respectable career, and study and practice Lisp in your spare time.

How to teach yourself programming?
1. read SICP
2. write a Scheme interpreter
3. write a Scheme compiler
4. write a Lisp OS
5. write a symbolic AI system, capable of reasoning using an SQL database
6. write a fuzzy-logic AI system, capable of face recognition

after that you should know pretty much everything. Apply for a job at Microsoft Research.

Thenewboston is horrible for people just starting out. His videos keep you motivated, but they dont teach you jack shit. Honestly, I was in your shoes about 6 years ago. My best advice, is to not start with Java. It is a complex language that is hard to learn if your just starting out, its even harder to master. It is a great language though. Even if you dont want to use it ever, learn VB. There is tons of material out there to help you through, and its very easy to learn the concepts of programming. If you arent into VB, try python.

Thenewboston has an awesome C tutorial. Trust me goy, use void main() and spam your code with system ("PAUSE"); and getch();

Is this the bad comedy thread? If so, then get this: My girlfriend asked me to poop on her chest.
So that night, I dumped her

Lol @15. Welcome to planet earth, you must be from outer space! Unless your a theoretical genius, java is a hard language to learn if your a(n) absolute beginner. When I say learn the language I mean actually learn it, not just the syntactical side of things. Its very easy to learn and memorize syntax, actually learning how to apply what you know efficiently and effortlessly, is not an easy task for us humans. My underlying point was, ANYONE can learn java and make shitty programs. I simply  stated my opinion, which I am entitled too, that if he wants to pursue a career in programming and he has never done anything related to programming before was to start with an easy language.

TL;DR - You're a douchebag. The bad comedy: The better half of you slid down your mothers throat.

^ ^ That opinion is not the only one, google search Programming languages to learn for beginners, Java stands out as a tough language to learn. So ++#peoplewhoagreewiththatopinion
