Point in traditional GUI applications today.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 17:55

HTML5 Canvas, JS with jit, even WebGL exists usable and across the board. For lagging users there can be some wrapper containing webkit.

Discuss.

What.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 18:11

JS with jit, getting jiggy with it.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 18:30

The web is shit. Javascript is shit. Object-orientation is shit.

Let it all die.

You just described 85% of computer programming. We can't let 85% of it die.

Fuck off back to Hacker News and go make cloud apps for iPhones there.

Look at this kid, he probably doesn't know what a kernel is.

So we can finally claw our way back to 1994 state of the art UI and speed? NO THANK YOU!

Learn how to use a compiler, go native. Static typing is so easy.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 20:19

Then we wouldn't have anything.

First time I actually bothered to watch this. Zed A. Shaw is actually a pretty cool guy. It's nice to have someone be frank like this.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 22:11

Wow this is pretty good.

I had always thought Zed was a fucking faggot.

fucking bizarre

He is a fucking faggot, but an entertaining and largely correct one.

you aren't a computer scientists until you know at least 4 definitions for kernel.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 22:59

you probably used the mouse to invoke a javascript to reference my OP which makes you a hypocrite. :)

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-22 23:40

>>15
How so? I had a mouse in 1989 and I came late to that particular party.

Anyway, why would I reach for a mouse when >>1 is so easy to type? When I reached the text area just now by typing f, 1, 8?

LAYERS OF THIN CLIENTS.

GUYS WHAT IF INSTEAD OF PILING SHIT ON TOP OF EACH OTHER, WE USE THE EXISTING ``LOWER LEVEL'' TECHNOLOGIES BUT MAKE THEM SIMPLE AND EASY TO USE?!?!?!

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-23 1:12

>>17
lol shit

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-23 1:12

There's not even a point in using GUIs. Use ncurses. It works, the clients love it because less mouse reaching, and it's cross platform.

Please stop inventing GUIs.

My customers will be thrilled when I tell them we're switching our 3D modelling app to ncurses.  Good idea.

What a complete waste of time.  And that guy claims to "teach programming."  I feel sorry for his students.  I guess it makes sense -- he spends half of his time rambling on about how awful it is to be a programmer and spends the the other half churning out awful programmers.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-23 3:11

>>13
That would be my take too. We can have one guy who spends all his time pointing at things that everyone agrees could be done better. Maybe one time in 100 things will actually change.

I know that most of mainstream computing has consisted of people making things up as they went or reacting to things that were never intended to really catch on, but that sense is doubly profound when I look at the web.  Maybe it's just because I'm less caught up in it that makes me more critical, but, really - text markup and a switchblade kit scripting language are what runs the world now? This is the best we could do?

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-23 3:29

Well of course not for video/graphic/cad software you twat. I'm talking about the other 90% of all software category.

Text markup is a good idea and javascript works though it also leaves more to be desired. It's probably not the best that humanity could do but it works relatively well and is relatively entrenched into the world.

I just wish there was some better technology for applications that need Internet connectivity. Perhaps the Android platform is that platform that the world needs to use instead of the technology that is collectively known as web 2.0.

Yeah because a program with GUI complexity in the class of Maya, 3D Studio, AutoCAD etc is totally going to be usable when reimplemented as an HTML form with a canvas tag.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-23 6:53

Complains about web front-end programming, offers no solutions.

Name: Anonymous 2012-10-23 7:27

>complex software written in js
>error-prone
>runs like shit
>eats as much ram as jvm
>gc can't take it
>even worse portability problems
>rebirth of native, massive anti-js crusade even larger than today

No you weren't.  You said there was no reason to use a GUI.  It's too late for you to backpedal now.  I've already begun the port of our software and if the customers don't like it, you are going to have to answer to them.  Please post your contact information to this thread.

Fuck you I only answer to myself.

It will happen. And graphics hardware companies will invent technologies like CanvasBoostTM which is guaranteed to make your WebGL/<canvas> experience twenty times smoother!

He means the bold post numbers beside each post, which call the quote() function, not the fragment links.

The idea of a machine language for the Web's virtual machine makes my nipples hard. A shame it would never happen.

Don't change these.
