That's the underlying idea behind real conservatism. It's pretty obvious that this isn't the way it's practiced today, much less ever.

Conservatism today deals mostly with the claimed preservation of so called "old fashioned values," which they describe as a throwback to the days of the agrarian communities of the South from the late 1800s. It's an idea that many can rally behind, because it has nothing to do with politics, and all to do with more salient issues within the Southern states and the Midwest communities. Some see a promise of a society more governed by religion, while others see a chance to allay what they believe to be a threat posed by minorities and immigrants in the U.S. (or any other country).

Today's conservatism is mainly a front to push other political ideologies that rarely ever align with the political ideologies of either true conservatism or liberalism. It would be more associated with the term "right wing" which does not mean the same as conservatism.

There are a lot of different brands of Conservatism.  As far as I can tell, today's scene contains three major sects:

1.  Fiscal conservatives - These guys believe in a trim government that spends as little as possible in order to maintain security and order.  Fiscal conservatives are extremely rare in politics and should in no way be confused with either Republicans or Democrats.
2.  Social conservatives - What most people associate with "Conservativism" today.  Social conservatives are concerned with  maintaining social mores and values.  Most of them aren't crazy, just conservative.  Your average American (Republic or Democrat) is a social conservative, even if they don't wish to associate themselves with that label.
3.  Neo conservatives - These are the conservatives in power.  Crazy evil fuckheads who manipulate social conservatives into voting them into power so they can step all over fiscal conservatives and liberals and, well, just about everyone in America.  Closest thing to fascists we have in this country right now.

As in, they oppose rapid change.  Moderate conservatives tend to be more accepting, yet still critical of change, and typically support only slow and moderate movements toward change. 

Of course, depending on what /kind/ of change it is, and whether or not it actually works or would be beneficial or not, well.. the conservative in question may or may not support it at all based on that.
