What's the point of conservatism?

If one tries to keep everything the same how can there be any improvement?

As in, they oppose rapid change.  Moderate conservatives tend to be more accepting, yet still critical of change, and typically support only slow and moderate movements toward change. 

Of course, depending on what /kind/ of change it is, and whether or not it actually works or would be beneficial or not, well.. the conservative in question may or may not support it at all based on that.
