Indie actually means "independent rock", which is alternative music without a major label. It doesn't mean it's always a certain 'way' (like Industrial, or something)
Choosing artists/bands by their 'genre' is the worst way to explore music.

Some indie bands/artists that come to my mind: Minus The Bear, Rocky Votolato, Russian Circles. I think P.O.S is still on an indie label. He's touring with Gym Class Heroes (it seems they are all over the radio now) or something.
Hmm...I have to say Indie is getting pretty popular...but not enough to be stupid. As long as shitty bands like Fall Out Boy are on the top, Indie is still safe from the mass of angsty teenage cunts and hoes.

indie just means that you weren't formed by sucking the cocks of mtv, talent shows, and the like. you just played music at your house and did whatever.
It used to mean that, but these days it's different, and what's called "indie" now isn't remotely similar to what it meant, say, a decade ago.
These days it doesn't necessarily matter what kind of label you're on, or even what kind of sound you have, so long as it falls outside the mainstream. Animal Collective sounds nothing like, say, Xiu Xiu, but I've seen both get lumped under "indie".
The point is, the term's meaningless now. It's like "alternative". It may have meant something a while back, but these days it's a catch-all description.
Also, being on an indie doesn't mean you don't get professional producers. Some bands just choose to self-produce because they think they can work out their ideas better that way.
