A Magyar Nyelv

Name: Boobs are awesome 2008-08-12 22:19

I have completed all the lessons on this site
http://www.personal.psu.edu/adr10/hungarian.html
what do i do now?

does anyone know of any other good <b>free</b> sites to learn of?
or any decent textbooks? good text books on any language are a rarity though

any help would be great

Name: A fellow learner 2008-08-13 7:13

I advise finding someone to learn with, it's much much quicker, and helps with the pronunciation and fluency part.

Sites for learning:
http://magyarora.com/ (quite a lot of lessons)
http://www.hungarotips.com/hungarian/ (puzzles, that sort of stuff)
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Hungarian/ (free book, quite shitshort)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_grammar (surprisingly useful)

Translators:
http://www.webforditas.hu/ (Quite awesome, also includes a dictionary, spell checker, and sentence parser)

Reference sites:
http://szotar.mokk.bme.hu/hunglish/search/corpus (search through existing translations, very useful)

Dictionaries that include Hungarian words:
http://dict.sztaki.hu/
http://almos.vein.hu/~vonyoa/AINDEX.HTM and http://www.cab.u-szeged.hu/cgi-bin/szotar
http://dictionary.com/
http://en.wiktionary.org/

You can also get Hungarian keyboard stickers for the Hungarian keys if you decide to add an extra keyboard layout. It's not really hard to remember, though.

Oh, I noticed you asked for books too. Well, I used http://www.teachyourself.co.uk/lhungarian.htm in conjunction with regular practice with an native speaker. The book wasn't bad - I expected it to go into more depth, but thinking about it, it covered a fair amount of material given its length. There are a lot of exercises in. I'd say I learned as much from having my answers to these exercises corrected by a native speaker as I did from the book itself.

regular practice with an native speaker

where does one acquire a native speaker?

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-16 5:56

in hungarian forums

I've had varying degrees of success with www.mylanguageexchange.com (lots of people, free membership but requires paying membership to initiate contact), www.huitalk.com (I was contacted by a hungarian speaker the day I signed up!), www.friendsabroad.com.

I guess you could also ask hungarian forums. Perhaps at that hungarian image board lohere.net too. Although from what I hear, it kinda sucks.

Name: Anonymous 2008-09-01 8:52

I found it after 2 seconds of Googling. Don't be lazy, man.

something i find useful is to look things like that up on wikipedia, and then find out what it's called in my language using the language thing on the side.

fuck you -ik verbs fuck you

Name: Anonymous 2008-09-27 0:07

how do you say "my hovercraft is full of eels" in Hungarian?

Name: Anonymous 2008-09-27 17:27

A légpárnás hajóm tele van angolnákkal.

Also, -ik verbs aren't hard. You just have to learn the -ik as part of the verb, and then it's pretty straightforward to conjugate, since there's only 3 differences.

But even if you don't already know the verb, it seems to me that sometimes you can also infer when a verb is an -ik verb because of the syllables before it. Many -ik verbs end in -kedik, -zik, -kezik, -etik (-et makes a verb passive). I could be wrong, though.

is "Mi" necessary in "Mi látuk" ?

Name: Anonymous 2009-01-23 14:54

Not really. The subject can generally be omitted, it's used for emphasis.

I think you mean "látunk" (we see) or "látjuk" (we see it), by the way.
