Name: waka 2006-04-26 15:26

I'm about to apply for a student visa to study japanese in japan... but I'm scared of this question: "What are your main reasons for studying Japanese"
could someone please please help me???

and before you say something bad about me, no, it's not so I can watch anime or read manga, my native language is not english, it's spanish, so I need a little help making it look apropiate, anything would really help thanks!

-_- no please... I need some help :(

No you don't need help.  You need to wack off.  To Hentai.  Learning Japanese will greatly facilitate this process.

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-26 15:55

what ARE your reasons? Surely you must have some, so just be honest. If you want to read manga with it, just say "So I can better appreciate Japanese culture, which I've been interested in since blah-blah-blah."

Name: waka 2006-04-26 15:58

my reasons are ... hard to explain

I'm from spain, and I did 12th grade in the US to learn english, and I use it now on daily basis
and just knowing a language which will last your whole life is great, cause I know I'll end up using it so many times... like meeting new people, finding better jobs and stuff like that

Same reason I'm learning Japanese:
their chicks are hot. I'm not afraid of using this answer, either. "Hey, uh, why do you want to go to Japan or learn Japanese?"
"Have you seen their chicks? They're hot."
Then, when people bring up that there are hot chicks wherever you are and that you don't have to move, tell them to get bent and don't question your logic. It has worked for me for, oh, two years now.

mmmm, yeah but, I need it to apply for the visa
I dont mind telling people i love hentai or anything, it's just that this should be kind of serious. thanks for the reply thou

My reason is reading 2ch.

Tell them you need a Visa so you can go there and get the women. Pretty cut and dry, I think.

well if you aren't going to give us some insight then we can only help you so far.  >>5 has given you a base to work with (you admire japanese culture and wish to take another step towards learning more about that culture).  add 'total immersion is the best way to learn a language' and stuff like that.

Have you studied it before? I'd highly recommend you teach yourself the kana before going there, otherwise you'll get buried. Once you know all the hiragana and katakana, you can focus on vocab and the fun stuff, kanji. The hardest part (I find) of the language are the grammar rules and particles, and the copula (I only know one of them, です, which is a conjugation of the verb する). Point is, knowing the kana will give you a big advantage, and it wouldn't hurt to study a few kanji either. Writing them is tricky as all get at first, but over time you recognize the radicals and the stroke count has certain patterns with each character. the hardest part of kanji is memorizing how they change pronouciations with different combinations. (ex: 家 is "ie", house, 家族 is "kazoku", family). Have fun anyways (I'm studying Japanese in America, but our sensei is from okinawa)

Luckily, Japanese has only two irregular verbs. Like the above poster said, "する," to do or be, and "くる," to come. So really, verbs won't be that hard.
Of course, adjectives conjugate like verbs, so... I guess it's easier in some regards, harder in others.

Yes, I actually studied it once but it was long ago, I dont even remember the kanas... I was planning on practicing with a friend before I go there

Probably should have already known that if you plan on going... Being literate would be a good plan.

But to be literate, you have to know about 800 or so kanji, at least to read the newspaper...I know guys in the seventh level of Japanese at the (thats three and a half years of study) college I go to who know that many, but still....

800... more like 2000 to be literate and be able to read the newspaper.

when japanese children finish junior high school they know about 1000 kanji. And ofcourse you need to also remember the meanings of the kanji when they are put together to form different words. But that is usually obtained through expeirence and daily speech.

if you are serious and want your japanese to be as good as your english you should move to japan and stay there for a couple of years.

Actually, the Joyo kanji list is 1945 items in length. You'd need a good grasp of all of them to read an average news paper. Most Japanese people know well over that number, though, (5000+) but don't necessarily know the finer points of all of them.
There is an official kanji test you can take. To get the highest rank (1A) you have to have a firm grasp of 8000 characters.
