I got Minecraft (Alpha) yesterday. I played for a few hours. I made a castle, a dungeon, and a house. I realized that's pretty much what the entire game was. It's like Legos, but slower and you can kill stuff. If you're thinking about getting it, the free version is almost exactly the same. The weapons/enemies don't really add anything to the game. Don't waste 9.95 Euros on it.
Uhm. Alpha is NOT like classic. In alpha the world is infinitive, it got dungeons, you git HP and armors, you got more blocks and stuff like doors, buckets, carts, pickaxes, swords, axes, shovels, ladders, stairs, cactus, reed, you can farm, its monsters and animals, TNT that explodes, SMP, you support majong and a shit load of more things. So don't tell me its like classic. Cuz then u didn't give the game a chance. Oh, its "Secret friday uptades" every friday to so it will get better all the time :)

Now the game sucks imo, with the new update, the game-play is unforgiving. if you die at all, you lose all the items you have on you, you cant get them back as far as i know, and you cant load previous saves, as the game auto saves when you die.
Its really a pain in the ass too see hours of game-play go down the hole when you die.
But they did add a few cool things, like the new hellish world and whatnot, but this game would be alot more fun if it dident have a auto save on death.

I agree with OP - it's TOO open ended. "Survive" is not a goal that satisfies every player; at the stage it is now, minecraft does not outperform the thunderous hordes of free games with more variety, a better premise and/or quicker gratification, not even to mention the mods already available for minecraft.

As an open-ended game with lots of room for creativity, there's bound to be a whole bunch of people who enthusiastically come up with awesome stuff. But it's too obviously in alpha - it's just not a fully fledged game. $10 may be a good 'investment', but consider this:

The reason why I bought the game (alpha, few days before the beta): the gameplay seemed nice, but the free version (classic) was boring (like playing 3d shooter in god mode).
So I bought it, and thought I'm gonna get the beta soon with even more features.
The alpha was nice at first, but then it became boring again, a friend said it's because I didn't set any goals once mastered the basic survival stuff. Donno. I've seen people trying to build stuff online but it didn't catch me.
Then came the beta. and.. seriously.. doesn't worth paying more than for the alpha. Only a few bugfixes. No serious gameplay improvement as far as I've noticed, and the game runs even slower now.
If I were the developer, I'd divide the money between converting the game to c++ (so that a game that should run on a 10-15 years old machine doesn't cause today's computers to sweat ; he anyways intends to port to mobile platforms, no ?) and greatly improving the gameplay.
I'm sure people would still buy this for 20 Euros once he get all the bugs fixed, but how many of them would desperately try to sell it after a few weeks of playing ?

Hey, OP. If you do not like having to gather resources I recommend an inventory mod. They allow you to add whatever you want to your inventory. It seems to me that you are primarily interested in the building aspect more than the rest of the game, I can relate.

Okay, Minecraft sucks. The Graphics fail and only kids play it. And if you try to prove me wrong and say that kids are not the only people who play it, you may be referring to yourself or your friends.

I do understand however,why SOME people may like it. They use it to build objects and monuments for their artistic creativity. But there are plenty of far better things for those uses.

This, of course, from a default, non-modded perspective.
I'm sure you could create mobs and large (but not infinite) maps in Blockland. That would require modding, though.
Now it's Minecraft's turn. If you've ever bothered to visit the forums (www.minecraftforum.net) you would see an incredible modding community within it. Custom mobs, custom blocks, custom items, even custom map generators.
Now, if you want to be exact and compare ONLY the 'official' content of both games, I personally prefer Minecraft, and I PERSONALLY consider your opinion BUlLSHIT. Then again, you probably consider my opinion BULLSHIT (such a friendly world we live in)

Ok 10 reasons MineCraft is not allowed for "12s" (trolls on this blog) I will call these people 'subjects' from now on.
1) It requires PC (As it is known, "12s" and other retards care only about gaming and prefer Xbox PS3 and other crap, simply because they don't know that computer was created for work, not for hyperfuck games)
2) It doesn't require super PC (If a subject has a PC (For trolling and masturbating) it must be super cool, so subject can write on every forum how assfucking cool he is, also writing what hyperfuck games he can play on it, but subject can not cover his microscopic balls with MineCraft because it can be ran on a normal computer)
3) It requires Brain (The biggest problem for subjects is that when they try to play games like MineCraft they always get an error '404 Brain.dll not found. Please go fuck yourself or send a message on isuckcock.org)
4) It requires Imagination (Well, I am not quite sure if these people even know what does that word mean...)
5)MineCraft original textures are 16X16 (As I said subjects believe that to show how infuckibly awesome they are they must have super cool device which allows them to play games with real life graphics (It is a fact that some subjects jerk off on computer games with super graphics) also subjects doesn't know there are HD texture packs and that you can edit textures yourself by using PhotoShop, which of course wouldn't help because of lack of imagination and PC (read Reasons 1 and 4)
6)Gameplay that you can choose yourself (Subjects can not play games which doesn't have a simple goal, because of an error they get each time they try to find Brain.dll(read Reason 3) also free choice can completely crash subject's system and cause them to spontaneously explode)
