I agree with OP - it's TOO open ended. "Survive" is not a goal that satisfies every player; at the stage it is now, minecraft does not outperform the thunderous hordes of free games with more variety, a better premise and/or quicker gratification, not even to mention the mods already available for minecraft.

As an open-ended game with lots of room for creativity, there's bound to be a whole bunch of people who enthusiastically come up with awesome stuff. But it's too obviously in alpha - it's just not a fully fledged game. $10 may be a good 'investment', but consider this:

You're telling me that the apparent 5 MILLION dollars in purchase fees, less whatever hosting costs there may be that CANNOT put a dent in that, is being reflected in the development speed?
I'd rather invest my $10 in a developer who is actually interested in putting in effort proportional to the reward.
