Looking for recomendations In the fantasy genera

have not read to much so this should be easy.
I liked "the name of the wind" and "locke lamora" / "red seas red skys" so right now i am wating for "wise mans fear" and "republic of theives". i was recomended the dark elf trilogy by salvatore and thought it was MEH.

generaly seem to like things that arnt full of magic, at least magic that is not explained in some way and has some basis and isint just a duex ex machina.

ideas?

Have you read the Lord of the Rings series?  Pure Genius, and, in fact, the progenitor of everything that's called fantasy.   Once you've read it you'll see how awful everything else is and be able to move up to Science Fiction.

Meh I like both fantasy and science fiction. But I like scifi thats mostly based on one persons point of view like starship troopers or armor or the forever war.

Yeah, 'cause the ladies really go for those fantasy guys.  Put your cape on and go play some D&D
If the choice is nerd or illiterate nerd, I'll take nerd.

If you think reading science fiction makes you literate then you have another thing coming(i don't know what this expression actually means i just hear it used sometimes..)!!

    lit·er·ate
Pronunciation:
    \ˈli-tə-rət also ˈli-trət\
Function:
    adjective
Etymology:
Middle English literat, from Latin litteratus marked with letters, literate, from litterae letters, literature, from plural of littera
Date:
    15th century

1 a: educated, cultured b: able to read and write2 a: versed in literature or creative writing : literary b: lucid, polished <a literate essay> c: having knowledge or competence <computer-literate> <politically literate>

Many authors and works in the SciFi genre are considered literature.
In fantasy, only Tolkien has broken that barrier.  The rest is conceptually plagiarized, escapist pulp.

That's the other thing coming at you.

hey thanks for a really trite dictionary definition post but if you read the thread you will see that I made absolutely no claim as to the literariness of fantasy fiction other than that science fiction isn't much of an improvement from it (which it really isn't, almost the same percentage is crap) and I'm not about to name the few fantasy authors that are actually worth reading (there are three or so, and Tolkien isn't one of them) so you can shut up now thanks

Don't bother. These snobby literate-fags infesting /book/ either aspire to the very apex of hypocrisy or never do anything that could by their warped values be considered a waste of time (which in itself is an idiotic concept, but whatever), even if it's fun. I bet they sustain their lives by sucking space food out of little tubes because everything else would be too time consuming and unnecessarily limit the time available to furthering their (perceived) elite cognitive abilities.
Either way, they're beyond help - don't let them turn you into one of them by arguing with them when deep down all they really want is some elevation of self-esteem by imagining that they're all part of that very top layer of humanity consisting only of choice individuals such as themselves - their private little club.
The sooner you understand that, the sooner you can ignore them or even be happy for them for finding something giving them satisfaction, however trite it may be.

Not really fantasy, more Sci-Fi, but any of the Anne Macaffrey book, on Pern, are awesome to read. In the Fantasy genre, a series like The Way Of The Shadows, or either Codex Alera (kind of Medievil times) or The Dresden Files (modern day wizardy) both by Jim Butcher

Name: Anonymous 2009-04-27 13:57

What's good about Pern?

Name: Anonymous 2009-04-27 19:20

Just read A Song of Ice and Fire.

Or make up your mind like a fucking adult, dammit. What the hell is wrong with you, asking 4chan for help?

26 posts and still no mention of Sir Terry Motherfucking Pratchett?

Who would want to open that can of worms?

If you want a good laugh, read the Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind.  He makes up everything as he goes along and eventually every book turns into COMMUNISM IS BAD!  Oh, and the main character cuts himself and turns into a vegetarian to cast magic or something.

Don't change these.
