Why? Nietzsche's a flying faggot. I suggest you go to your local book store, pick up Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and read for a little while. If you aren't the average dumb philosophy buff who can't think for himself, I gaurentee you'll grow sick of his drivel and chuck it.
I find it insulting when people include him amongst the greatest thinkers of all time, right next to Einstein. It's like, fuck, have you even read any of his shit, or just his wikipedia page? The guy had siphilis; don't attibute him to anything else.

Study up on syphilis. All the bullshit he spewed, inapplicable to unadulterated humans, was a result of the widely-known mental effects of syphilis. He produced one novel concept--once you know what it is, there is no use in reading the rest of his faggotry.
If you think Nietzsche is worth reading, then go enjoy some Rand.

Nietzsche is great.....I think his works got distorted a lot, but at the core, they're great.

When said venereal disease renders you manic and psychotic, yes. Yes it does.
First of all, I'm pretty sure Nietzsche didn't develop syphilis until late in life. It is, after all, what killed him.
Second, no. Arguments stand on their own merits. Their origins are irrelevant. The validity (or not) of Nietzsche's philosophy is something which is wholly independent of his personal problems.
I don't even like Nietzsche. I just felt the need to comment on an idiotic statement.

No, he suffered from syphilis almost all of his life, though only died of it later. Indeed, being BED-RIDDEN for weeks at a time is said to have "inspired" him to create his "masterpieces" (shit).
I agree that arguments stand on their own merits, but his arguments lack merit. Like I said, he had one novel idea; once you understand that idea, there is no reason to read anything else by him. The fact that he is often considered amongst the greatest thinkers of all time is an insult to thinkers who actually were great.
Nietzsche is important and was a great thinker. Its true hes overated for sure, he isnt even close to an Einstein or even say a Wittgenstein.

Nietzsche was completely batshit. Hell, the man was in love with his sister. Which just goes to show, cause he was bloody brilliant. Anyway, Asimov's Foundation books might work for you

Nothing. The guy (>>11) is probaby some faggot who can't think for himself and believes whatever cute opinions his philosophy professor shits at him.
Philosophers argue that Nietzsche is brilliant, you see. BUT HE WASN'T! Okay, God is dead, there is no such thing as truth. These are the best things he ever thought up. The other shit he spewed, though, is almost fucking EMBARRASSING to read, ESPECIALLY if you understand his history, and what he experienced leading up to, and during, his philosophomosizing. The man had the fucking intelligence and self-esteem of a toddler.
I'm not trying to detract from his (decent) accomplishments, or what he did for European philosophy. He simply was not a great thinker. If he was, then I know of several who post on /b/. Remember, you can't consider background!!!***
***Oh man, 90% of modern "philosophers" are fucktards.
i agree with you, but he was emo, and all the emo kids are alike "bawwww, he's right maaan, there is no such thing as truth, and god is dead, bawwwwww, imma read sartre and cut" *relate*
Im not sure how much of Nietzsche you have read, but he’s much more important than that summary. His deconstruction of metaphysics and perspectivalism are both extremely influential to both European and American British philosophy. Infact I and many others would argue that he’s the most important of the post Kant pre positivist philosophers.
Alot of his writings are very accessible and riddled with timeless political/social themes, making him VERY popular with the teenage/hipster/college freshmen crowd. But just because he has some..."questionable" followers does not undermine the importance of his ideas. You need to dig a little deeper in Nietzsche to gain the systematic knowledge you attain when reading most other philosophers, I suggest you read him again and keep an open mind.

True. This, however, does not make him a great thinker.

Ok, maybe. I doubt I'll be able to, though. To be honest I've only read Thus Spoke Zarathustra plus his God is dead bit, but some of the stuff I encountered in the former was simply so terrible that it destroyed my opinion of the man. Probably because I've heard so much how it's the PRIME OF HIS WORK ABOSLUTELY BRILLIANT!!! Perhaps he had truly begun to go insane during that era, I don't know. Zarathustra is terrible, though. Even worse than reading Atlas Shrugged, because the translation didn't read nearly as well and it was far more pathetic.

Zarathustra was a joke. Just because it is often found to be the most accessible of his work, people assume it is his magnum opus. It is basically Nietzshe's attempt to to put his Nihilism->Actualization idea into poetry. It is actually one of his least accredited works. I mean he devotes about a third of the novel to the idea of eternal recurrance (which frankly is just a dumb idea).
If you want to get a better picture of the Nietzsche that changed the way the Western world operates, read _Will to Power_ or _Beyond Good and Evil_, but don't assume he's a crackpot based the Zarathustra (which by the way did not even find its way into real publication until after Nietzsche was dead)
