Going to the US - Where to buy stuff?

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-20 4:45

Hiya.

I'm going on a class trip to the US for 5 weeks in October, and I want to buy some anime DVD's, fantasy books... In general I wanna visit the "nerd shops" that specialize in stuff like that :)

The problem is that I don't know where to look for them. I'm going to visit Denver, Kalispell, Salt Lake City, San Fransisco, Los Angeles / Hollywood, Las Vegas and Santa Fe... That's a few of the places I'm visiting anyway. So I'm wondering if any of you fellow anonymouses has some tips as to where I might find that kind of stores? If they have a website or road descriptions or anything like that, it would be a major plus.

Thanks in advance for any helpful answers :)

I can't believe people are still looking for speciality shops IRL when you can get everything on the Internet.

Fucking idiots.

NO U!

because you get to see the item firsthand before you pay for it, this is important especially for figurines and models. and you get to take it back with you instead of waiting for it to arrive.

Because it's really really really hard to tell what an animu figure looks like from the pics amirite? And you can't possibly send it back if you absolutely don't like it. (Okay, maybe not if you ordered it from Japan)

>and you get to take it back with you instead of waiting for it to arrive.

Yeah, never mind that you had to actually spend a lot of time to find this place that has the article you want and then go there.

You poor fag.

Good thing you can now pay the customs for US imports directly in the store. And then, if you're unlucky, pay them again when customs in your own country finds the goods.

While it's true that most stores suck way more than anything you can find on the net, sometimes it's just a good way to kill time or hang out with your friends. I know of a few places in SFO, but they're really only good for just that: hanging out.

...

Just gtfo.

In the US there's (hopefully) alot more stuff to pick from, there's like close to nothing in my own country. I just want to check out the prices and selection in stores in the US, and if it's too expensive I simply don't buy it. It's fun to broswe through anyway. (And regular american fantasy novels etc is alot cheaper over there than here anyway).

And no, I won't have to pay 24% customs when I go back home, since I'm allowed to bring stuff for the value of a certain cash limit before I have to pay customs, and that limit is alot higher when I travel myself (like 10-20 times higher), compared to ordering over the intarweb.

What are you doing here anyway? Go back to /b/ to troll.

For anime DVDs, you can go to Suncoast or Virgin but the prices will be retail.  For manga, you can go to Barnes & Noble -- again it will be retail.  Those are chain stores.  You can go to their websites for the nearest locations.  The best places to go are, of course, the mom & pop stores but you'll have to look in the yellow pages.  Look under "anime" or "comics" or comic books".
