Since I am very original and everyone's starting "favorite blahblah"-threads, I thought we'd need to rant about the series that really sucks too.
The worst one I've seen is probably Pugyuru. The CGs and animations were crap, the character-design sucked, and the voice actors didn't do a good job either. Not at all.

I would almost vouch Lain, but that at least had ONE redeeming point.
As far as what was wrong with PPP, there really wasn't anything. The problem comes when you expect it to be another Excel Saga, and you get another episode 26, except it's an hour long. Goes to show that Nabeshin was right, and people are desensitized very quickly to the type of stuff shown in episode 26, and it just won't be funny any longer.

M.D. Geist is the second worst anime; this is widely confirmed, although nobody can decide what the first worst is.
The worst thing I've ever watched is "Agatha Christie's Detectives Poirot and Marple", which was written by a team of people who have never read a mystery novel or met a Belgian or Englishman. It can't compare to Spectral Force or Weiss Kreuz or Space Photon Sailer Odin, though.
PS Lain is awesome

If any of you would consider Bayblade an anime, I would go ahead and say that is the worst anime out there. Terrible.
I haven't seen it myself, but I hear Mission Outer Space Srungle was pretty terrible. It's one half of Macron 1. Then again, Goshogun is the other half and it's considered great.
There is an anime I saw a long time ago, rented from Blockbuster. All I can remember is that it had the most terrible fight scene ever. Two shirtless guys standing across from each other with a spotlight background punch each other, then kick each other the exact same way. Then the camera circles around them and it repeats once more, and fight is over. If anyone can identify this terrible OVA (I think), please say so.

You all dont seem to know the meaning of bad anime. That or you need to see more. Happy World gets my vote for the worst. Its bad as in art style, animation, story, characters. Its horrible by ecchi standards, which are pretty low to begin with. They decided to kill it after three episodes. Its so ridiculously bad that it just makes me want to hit my head into something over and over.

Yumeria had good animation and art (Mizuki looked really hot in her pink-striped swimsuit), but the storyline REALLY REALLY sucked.
It's not based off on an H-game, it's based off a PS2 game that's non-H. Also, there's a PC benchmark that uses the PS2's rendering engine (which is pretty awesome, actually) to benchmark your 3D video. Google for 'YumeBench'. =)

Rizelmine is the worst ever. An android stuck at the age of 8 unless she gets love, so she is married to some 12 year old kid who only likes older women (His teacher). Catch is, when Rizel cries, her tears are made of Nitro Glycerine... Lolifest ensues (including 1 episode about her trying to get him to fuck her)
Here in America, we live in a climate of moral decay. What is the cause of this? It is called "anime". Anime is a perverse, evil, insiduous form of animation from the dark land of Japan, and is corrupting America's youth at unprecedented rates. Here are a few examples of anime which are circulating on the Internet and may very well be in your home:
1) Ah My Goddess: A sick and disgusting show which causes children under the age of 18 to think they are capable of love. The main female character is clearly under 18, and is forced into a romantic relationship by an older man who "wishes" for her to be his girlfriend forever. He even KISSES her, and she appears NAKED. That poor girl must be so confused.
2) Love Hina: I'm not even going to mention the unspeakable, disgusting, pedophilic, pornograhpic events which transpire during this show, but suffice it to say, groups of young men on Love Hina-fueled rampages are raping children at a level unheard of since the 60s.

Evangelion was the worst fucking anime I've ever seen. There wasn't a single episode of it that wasn't orgasming all over itself over how MYSTERIOUS and RELIGIOUS it was. If it wasn't such a cruddy piece of badly drawn mecha-centric shit, maybe it might have had some reedeming qualities. Because if it had those redeeming qualities, they would have been around to be cancelled out by all the spectacular Christian idiocy! But no, it had nothing. And for all that, the director dared to produce two meaningless, "mysterious" extra episodes after he ran out of money because he thought his anime was so great.

I think this anime has strayed from what is the "worse" anime from what anime that one person doesn't like. And it's more a matter of taste from there. I would prefer to see on this thread something that's more of a universal crap listing, the anime equivolent to "Maid in Mahanttan". The fact that any of the series that I see mention have actual cult followings sorta proves they are more a matter of taste.
BTW. my vote goes to Najika Blitz tactics. I picked it up on torrent and has regretted it ever since. Anime like that is what gives Anime a bad name. Water thin storyline, pretenious seriousness, cliche unlikible characters, illogical ending. It's only selling point is it's ecchi appeal, and even then they are ridiculous. The show LITERALLY averages panty shots 4 times a minute. If I wanted porn that badly, I'd get some actual hentai instead, so even there it fails.

It is right that the taste of anime (and for that part anything else) is individual, but a part of the right of free speech is the right to complain about anything you want, no matter the opinion of others.
So, keeping that in mind, I declare every variation ever made of "Dragon Ball" as the crappiest, thinnest, and most commercialized anime and manga ever. And on it's side, but not quite on the same level, goes "Pokèmon", "Beyblade", and other money-machine series.

Dragonball was a martial arts manga done by a comedy manga author, and it was good. It should have ended with DBZ, rather than dragging it out to GT. DBZ should have ended with Goku dying on Namek, but they dragged it out by bringing Freeza and Goku back (what was the deal with the "Earth check-in station" in the dub?) - it was dragged out enough by the end of DBZ and it didn't really need to go to GT. GT was only done to make money off a popular series, but it should have instead ended on a high note at the end of DBZ.
However, it would be hard to believe that the anime of Pokemon, Yugioh and Beyblade were made for any purpose but to sell toys. Yugioh might be an exception in that it wasn't originally about the card game at all. In the original manga it's so obviously meant to be Magic: The Gathering, but it just took off and eventually became a real card game. The sole reason why the Yugioh anime was released in America, of course, was to sell the cards, and they removed all reference to the part without the cards.

That's because the longer a series gets, the more content it has to have if it's not to become boring. Imagine how much filler Gunbuster would have required if it was twenty-six episodes instead of six.
Fullmetal Alchemist, on the other hand, was an excellent series. Of fifty-one episodes, only one or two were really filler, and the length of the series gave ample time to show how Edward grew up.

good or bad, i think Anno Hideaki redeemed himself in his next role as miyu-miyu in FLCL (or is that just an urban legend?)
as for the "you haven't watched enough anime"... perhaps what is meant is you haven't seen enough really bad anime. say what you will about the story, the production of Eva is pretty damn good. there's a lot worse out there.
my only real gripe with Eva is that Shinji is such a fucking pussy! he should grow a couple of balls! i mean, how fun would it be controlling a giant mecha like that?
my vote for worst anime is Initial D. i watched the first episode, but after seeing it i just didn't care what happened to anyone from there. car worship is boring as fuck (though 2fast2furious is awesome when you're stoned).
and if anyone's after that million, the best way through any poor anime is with a drinking game. drink to all panty-flashes, drink to all money-saving animation (the endless elevator sequences in Eva for example where nothing moves for a minute, or the looping scenes in Azumanga Daioh that get funnier the more repetitive they are, somehow). just those 2 rules should be enough, but there's more if you google for them (ankle-to-head pans, vibrating eyes, blushes, etc. just don't drink to blushes in Saikano, because those red lines don't ever go away).
>>85
...
Jesus fuck. If you think that's good production, I think *you* need to watch more anime. Specifically: GITS2, anything by Katsuhiro Otomo, My Beautiful Girl Mari (Fucking Koreans can do it better!), Any Ghibli film, FLCL, Alien Nine, Cat Soup, Any 4 Degree C film, and there are more that I can't think of.
My favorite drinking game is for Abenobashi:
If he's crying, take a shot.
If his nose is bleeding, take a shot.
If MuneMune's tits are bouncing, take a shot.
If she crushes his face in her tits, take a shot.
If you make it to the end of the episode without blacking out, empty the bottle.
Name:

Why are you comparing production quality between a 20-odd episode TV series vs films and OAVs? Of course the latter are going to have higher quality production, they have more money!
you can't say Eva was shit production... there's obviously a lot of shortcuts (the endless elevator sequences), but it's not like the screen's full of "cutout" characters (like the white, outlined people that populate Excel Saga and Azumanga Daioh, both of which are very cool animes).
it was pre-digimation, so it's not all that fair to line it up next to GitS SAC or even FLCL. hehe... before digital animation, it was probably hell just to get Gendo's glasses to reflect a computer screen, like they spend half the series doing (btw, take a drink when that happens).
oh, i forgot to mention that Rei is a pain in the arse as well.
the drink-when-sashi's-face-is-in-mune-mune's-tits rule applies in FLCL with Ta-kun and Haruko as well...
It produced the greatest AMV ever though, set to 2 Live Crew's Doo Doo Brown. If you haven't seen it, you haven't lived.

Air Master gets my vote for being pretty damn bad. Ugly chara models, dialogue is piss-poor, and the plot for almost every single ep is "New bad guy shows up. Air Master kicks his/her ass. Eventually, this bad guy becomes a friend."
My vote for worst anime to watch with a group and heckle is Space Battleship Yamato (I think that's the movie version name, I forget what the anime name is). It's so bad, it's funny.
My vote for worst anime, however, goes to .hack//Legend of the Twilight. I had the patience to enjoy ./hack//sign (though it did take me a long time to get through all 26 eps), and I've played through all 4 of the .hack games (I did the smart thing and bought them recently when they were $20 each, instead of when they first came out at $50 each <hatred for capitalism>), but .hack//LotT was just bad imo. Taking game characters and giving them to moronic 12 year olds (and even chibifying the game characters for them) is a bad idea to start with. All the characters in the show have 1 personality trait, there's next to no character development, and the plot is practically non-existent. And to me, it looks like Rena acts more like a girlfriend with Shugo than a sister in the earlier eps, which I find rather sick.

My picks for worst ever?
Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, especially if you can find one of the horrid English dubs licensed in the 80s and shown as "G-Force," "Battle of the Planets," or "Eagle Riders." The original is heavy-handed and melodramatic, the 1980s dubs are incoherent, and both are animated at a migraine-inducing two frames per second.
"Captain Harlock, Space Pirate," may just be the cheesiest, corniest, most melodramatic, most over-the-top thing I've ever seen, animated or otherwise. In the English dubs there is an added bonus: the eponymous title character, who is bishonen to the point of being androgynous, is voiced by someone doing his best to sound like James Earl Jones doing Darth Vader.
Well, Worst anime that I have purchased would have to go back several years, and to the agonizingly horrid dub of Ursei Yatsura (or however its spelled, too early for thinking right now) called Those Obnoxious Aliens. It was truly painful.
Worst anime that I haven't bought, geez, there is alot, most recently, I would have to say Kakyuusei 2, I made it thru the entire first episode, and it was absolutely the most boring anime I had ever seen, Other notable bad anime that just turned me off was Dragonball Z (dragonball without the z, while childish was at least a bit interesting) I mean, seriously, lets float around, in some strange pose grunting and talking about powerlevels and such, way to pack 30 seconds of content into a 22 minute show. Hmm other bad stuff, PPP was pretty scary, but I will admit that I did laugh at parts.

Inuyasha isn't really all that bad on its own, but it drags ON SO MUCH! It has so much filler that if you took it all out, the series would probably only be 26 episodes long. Entire story arcs are basically just filler.

Exactly. I don't watch Inuyasha much. I don't care for it. I certainly wouldn't purchase it, though I sometimes watch it on Adult Swim.
I find it above-average but not compelling enough to justify taking the time to watch it more often or seek it out, now that I'm putting in sixty-hour weeks at my new job.
Inuyasha has great art and animation, but mediocre script and plotting. Inuyasha just isn't an interesting character--he's just an angsty, surly bishonen boy with doggy ears. There's nothing more to him than a bad attitude. And Kagome's "personality," to the extent that she has one, can be summed up in four words: "EEEEEEEEEK! Save me, Inuyasha!" Sango and Miroku are interesting, but don't get nearly enough screen time to salvage it for me.
So I don't care for Inuyasha, and I don't watch it, but anyone who says it's TEH ZOMG WURST EVAR!!!!!111one has never seen truly bad anime (*cough* Dragonball *cough* Pokemon *cough* Sailor Moon *cough* Battle of the Planets / G-Force / Eagle Riders *cough* Voltron *cough* Captain Harlock Space Pirate *cough*).
Shows like Gatchaman, Yamato and Harlock look cheesy because THEY'RE OLD. Christ. They're not going to fucking look like or sound like new anime. And, honestly, they were innovative for their time (you have Gatchaman to thank for opening the door to violent, mature action shows, and Harlock and Yamato are just plain legendary).
Would you say that Casablanca is a crappy movie because it's in black and white and it's been ripped off by a bajillion movies that came *after* it? Hopefully not, because that would be retarded.
There is a difference between shows that you don't like, or shows that are outdated, and shows that are just shitty. There's actually also a difference between mediocre/cliche and "ZOMG T3H WORST EVAR!!!!111".
BTW, has anybody mentioned Lady Death? Dear god. Utter shit.
I'm tempted to mention Early Reins, as it's just really badly done all around, though it doesn't really reach that Dog Soldier/Apocalypse Zero/what-have-you level of 'so bad it's amazingly entertaining' so perhaps it shouldn't be on a 'worst ever' list. Hmm.
The Lady Death movie invokes that whole "is it anime" argument, but fuck that, anime's cartoons. However, the threat of a movie written by Carl Macek is QUITE FRIGHTENING INDEED

Gatchaman doesn't just look cheesy, it IS cheesy. Not all old anime is shite. Just compare it to Lupin III.
And not all new anime is better. Pokemon has better animation, from a technical perspective, than Lupin III, but Pokemon was written to sell toys and trading cards to an audience of seven-year-olds, and it shows.
It's cheesy to us because we have different standards. The melodrama of Captain Harlock was more acceptable then than it is now. It was something that audiences then responded to. And Gatchaman I think only looks cheesy because of the datedness--otherwise I think it's not that much different than any other action show.
Earlier shows helped to develop the standards we have for what we consider 'good' in anime now. Just like in the US, television developed from more simplistic stories with little continuity and awkward fight scenes to (hopefully) more layered narratives, continuity and well choreographed/animated fight scenes. Just like in literature we've seen standards move from the larger-than-life archetypal characters on glorious quests of legends and epics like Beowulf to psychologically realistic, morally ambiguous characters in down-to-Earth stories. Back then those stories would be considered just fine, whereas now people who read Beowulf often criticise the shallow characterization and 'dullness' of the story.
Besides, if there hadn't been for Gatchaman, a hell of a lot of other shows would never have happened--Gatchaman was largely responsible for introducing more harsh violence into action anime as opposed to more cartoonish violence. The same can be said for a lot of other classic shows; I feel they deserve some respect for that.
And I LOL at you accusing me of thinking all old anime is shite. I'm the one trying to defend classic shows from people in this thread. Trust me, I've seen Lupin III (though not all of that is good) and a hell of a lot of other old school. I'm usually stuck trying to convince people to watch stuff that was made before the 90s.
Also, how is Lupin not rather cheesy in and of itself? I love me some Lupin, but it can be just as dated, ridiculous and cheesy as Harlock or Gatchaman ever were. Especially the TV series.
And please, I know not all new anime is good. Hell, most of the anime coming out now are mediocre to crap. *shrugs*
I'm simply trying to point out that 1) commercial or mediocre are not the same thing as "OMG WORST SHOW EVAR!!!111"; 2) different decades had different standards for shows; 3) it's rather silly to bitch when a show doesn't do things it was never meant to do (like be deep and meaningful if it's meant to be an entertaining action/whatever show, or not have enough action if it's a romance/slice of life show, etc) and hell, 4) some people would argue that melodrama isn't necessarily bad (hello Osamu Dezaki).
Having seen all the superhero shows that have come afterward, Gatchaman does look rather typical. It wasn't at the time, it was one of the first, but to go back and watch it now, especially if one isn't nostalgic for it, it's fairly plain action. That doesn't necessarily mean it can't be enjoyable, but you probably won't find anything incredibly deep or brilliant in it--that's not the point.
(I should probably note that I speak mostly about the first series, and a bit of the second. I'm pretty sure there were more, but I haven't seen those.)

Inuyasha is mediocre bordering on bad, simply because the potential is there, but it falls into the Takahashi trap of repetitiveness (not to mention the Inuyasha/Kagome on again/off again relationship that brings out the 13-year-old 'shippers in droves and ensures a complete dearth of good IY fanworks anywhere on the internet.). I enjoy the characters (except for Kagome, because she's such a cardboard cutout of a helpless female lead), and the plot is interesting enough, but it's gone on about a hundred episodes too long. Too much filler, too many overused jokes, not enough of actual plot/characterization. Add that to the fact that it's one of the worst dubs out there - I seriously think they went out of their way to mispronounce every character's name. ><
The worst anime I've seen overall is the X movie. Because when people decide to condense a 20+ volume (and still incomplete) manga series into a 2-hour movie, good things do not happen. (Apparently CLAMP themselves thought it was absolute shit, too - they mocked it in Miyuki-chan in Wonderland. XD)
Pokemon is cute and funny, which make up for the fact that it's a 30 minute commerical. The card game anime animes are just shitty.

The episode where Lupin is 'captured' by those crazy feminazis was probably the best pointlessly cheesy episode. Runner up for me would be Lupin against the nazis. Never did figure out who the short stubby guy was supposed to be though.
I'll throw a vote in for Happy Lesson too, just because I haven't seen any of the other things being talked about.
Which H anime is that horrible dubbing that gets posted to /f/ all the time, speaking of bad anime?

I’ll agree the anime is on a steady path to the circles of hell, but the Manga is doing fine, letting me believe there is some sort of justice out there.
MY least favorite is Inuyasha, hands down. It causes me bodily harm to watch that show. I'm getting a hemorrhage just thinking about it, thanks. I don’t know why but I want to punch my television when I hear Kagome talk and shriek like a pansy. As Lewis Black once said “If I’m going to hurt that much, I’m going to do it to myself.”

You probably feel that way about Naruto because it's in Filler Hell right now. Just take my advice and stop watching filler storylines altogether. I started down this path a while back with One Piece, and I couldn't be happier.
I must have watched Inuyasha for about 50 or 60 episodes. On their own, each episode has some merit... but after a while I realized there really wasn't any overarching storyline. That just kills it for me.
I had the misfortune of seeing an episode of Divergence Eve recently at an anime club. That was just terrible in every way. I think everyone there agreed that it looked like something a college student made as his final project (although that might well be excellent). Everything from the animation to the character designs to the writing to the story to the music to the voice acting was bottom of the barrel & extremely cliched. Avoid at all costs.

Just so you know...
Pokemon, Beyblade, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc...
ARE MADE FOR 7 YEARS OLDS.
THAT'S WHY WE, PEOPLE GENERALLY 18+, DON'T LIKE IT.
That's like getting mad at a 10 year old for thinking something like Speed Grapher is total shit. Well of course it's total shit, I doubt they understand one word of it. These anime are made for smaller children, so really only little kids can rate them, or else it's simply not fair.
Truthfully, I haven't watched a lot of bad anime series. But I do dislike a lot - Naruto and Blue Gender. Project A-Ko is pretty bad, and I didn't like Happy Lesson.

Inuyasha was not the worst in my opinion, it was just another one of Rumikos ideas that started out nice and ended shit because of her horrible storytelling. The characters she makes are always interesting to me, but when it comes to plot development its the worst I've ever imagined. Inuyasha had good character interactions, and should have ended around maybe..65 episodes? It would have been so much better than. I blame Rumiko not the characters for this one.

Anime (Japanese: アニメ?, [a.ni.me] ( listen); Listeni/ˈænɨmeɪ/ or /ˈɑːnɨmeɪ/) are Japanese animated productions featuring hand-drawn or computer animation. The word is the abbreviated pronunciation of "animation" in Japanese. The term, "anime", itself did not emerge until the mid-1980s,[1] and its intended meaning of the term sometimes varies depending on the context.[2] Among Japanese, the term references all animation.[3] In English, the term is defined as a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastic themes.[4][5] Arguably, the stylization approach to the meaning may open up the possibility of anime produced in countries, other than Japan.[6][7][8] Yet, for simplicity, many Westerners strictly view anime as an animation product from Japan.[5]
While the earliest known Japanese animation dates to 1917, and many original Japanese animations were produced in the ensuing decades, the characteristic anime style developed in the 1960s—notably with the work of Osamu Tezuka—and became known outside Japan in the 1980s.[9] Anime has a large audience in Japan and recognition throughout the world. Distributors can release anime via television broadcasts, directly to video, or theatrically, as well as online.
Both hand-drawn and computer-animated anime exist. Anime includes animated television series, films, video, video games, commercials, and Internet-based releases; furthermore, it encompasses most, if not all, genres of fiction.[10] Furthermore, anime utilizes various media as sources, particularly print media, like manga, literature, and other works. As the market for anime increased in Japan, it also gained popularity in East and Southeast Asia. Anime is currently popular in many different regions around the world.

Divergence Eve is absolute trash. It's not even hilariously bad (except the ED); it's just a clusterfuck of unpleasantness. I cannot fathom how it managed to get a sequel.

well, not sure if it's worst but really shitty is new oreimo season.
I didn't like Sasami-san@ganbaranai at all. There was so much shit going on, it never made sense, the characters sucked and the story was overall pretty boring for me. The art was on

I stopped watching Anime after "Paranoia Agent". It was at this point that I realized what psychological damage over-exposure to 2d fantasy characters are to my own reality. Seriously, It's the best and worst anime I have ever seen. Of course, you anti-social "afro-neck-beards" wouldn't be able to comprehend the social implications to mass hysteria because you are drowning head-first in that immersive toilet of fantasy.

Omamori Himari had great animation, but was ruined by a boring, cliche story and a condescending reliance on fan service.

Guilty Crown is a good contender for it. The character designs, visuals and music were the only things in that shit show which didn't completely sucked. It's probably the worst anime ever (aside from hentais and ecchi anime maybe), at least for the writing. I still can't believe how a human being can write something THAT shitty.
Complete garbage
