Exactly the same as it is in America.
In America most anime is probably watched and aimed at children.
But that doesn't mean it doesn't have it's adult fans.(Wow, I just noticed I'm an adult. :()
That also doesn't mean that there aren't some anime that are aimed at older people.
...I seriously doubt you would see many adults in Japan with anime ringtones, though. What are you quoting?
Also: what's to say this "Priestess of Tetis" person's opinion is anymore valid than mine? I could write up something real quick, stick it on an Angelfire page, and add a link to my wapanese email at the bottom, too. Would doing that make me an expert?
>Misconception #1: "Anime is not for children"
>Sailormoon, Pokemon, Gundam, Card Captor Sakura, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Marmalade Boy, Fushigi Yuugi, GTO, Detective Conan, One Piece, Hime-chan’s Ribbon, Chou Kuse ni Narisou, Yuu Yuu Hakushou, You’re Under Arrest…. ALL of these shows were intended for children (elementary school through early junior high at the LATEST).
Yep, that is/was a common misconception. Although, none of those are really the darker shows. Some shows, especially the ones that get big movies spin-offs like any given "Gundam" title, might be aimed at kids... as well as the whole family.
>But if you are in high school or older and you love anime, you are just as much an anime otaku in Japan as you are in America.
Agreed.
>Misconception #3: "American releases of anime are bad because they leave out the swearing"
I've never heard any one bring this out. That is, with the exception of when swearing was translated, but then editing out/down for TV release, or to make it more child-friendly. In that case she couldn't argue that that's what the translators thought it would translate to... since they didn't translate it to that.
>Misconception #4: "But the Japanese voice actors are just so much better than the dub!"
I agree with her that this used to be a common misconception. I haven't heard it recently, but then again I haven't really been hanging out at any anime communities lately. Two things though:
1: Most people usually only say that after having seen the sub frst, and got used to the Japanese VAs, myself included. There were plenty of anime that I've saw in English first and liked/were okay with the VAs.
2: That section is full of her opinions. "Such and such isn't a good actor"- others might, and probably do, disagree.
>Misconception #5: "Anime songs and anime music is popular music in Japan"
>Aside from an occasional theme song done by a popular artist or group(...)
>I don’t think many of you were under this misconception, but I sure was ^_^;
Does that misconception exist..?
Bleh, after reading and then responding to all of that, I feel I lost braincells. Were all of those popular misconceptions or just misconception that she had. Sounds like a case of someone who took a trip to Japan and came back thinking she was an expert.
