I'd like to try out linux this summer, but before I jump in I'd like to know what linux users use to download from usenet/torrents, and what they use to play video.
I watch anime and foreign films, so soft sub support is important for me, and I watch shitty porn so support for wmv/other shitty windows codecs is also important.

Aren't deluge/rtorrent bittorrent clients? And irssi a IRC client?
I kind of like xchat for IRC as I only use it to download off xdcc bots, and I've heard that the mplayer included in the package manager of ubuntu isn't up-to-date.
Is there anything specific I should do when compiling mplayer to make it easier to play ssa/ass files? Are there any good usenet clients for linux? Should I just run utorrent through Wine, or is deluge (or rtorrent) as good as utorrent?

Look, kids, when you don't know the answer to a question, don't bother with it. Nobody is going to think that you actually DO know what you're talking about even if you act like a haughty vet that's answered so many questions in his super brilliant lifetime that he can't be bothered with any more.
OP- compile mplayer yourself (there are guides to do so, even guides with animu in mind, google is your friend). Deluge sucks, and rtorrent/libtorrent are a bit outdated when compared to utorrent. If your computer can handle xchat, it can handle running utorrent through Wine just fine.
As for newsreaders, I wouldn't know, I don't use them.

I actually think Deluge is pretty fine, but then i'm no hardcore linux user who have a CLI-fetish. I wish you the best of luck, it took me about a year of dual-booting to really fall in love with linux but now I wouldn't change it for the Internet.

OP, if you like soft subs/animu, stick with windows. Linux has absolute SHIT soft sub support. There is no Vobsub equivalent in linux, and there doesn't seem to be one planned in the foreseeable future.
utorrent - best torrantin HANDS DOWN, but abit greedy on resources
rtorrent - EFFICIENT: download at 700Kbps whilst watching animu.
deluge - The consistent torrent performance of utorrent but needs resources.
rtorrent and deluge are both GUI but I think deluge has a commandline option.
This is a moot point however since i recently learned you can run GUI applications in linux using nohup and xmove

I recently switched to Ubuntu Hardy Heron and it was pretty easy to set it up for watching animu.
If you're still around, OP, just type these into the terminal:
sudo apt-get install mplayer
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted extras
That'll install mplayer and most of the codecs you'll ever need.
Then:
gedit ~/.mplayer/conf
Then add:
ass=true
embeddedfonts=true
correct-pts=true
sid=0
Save and exit. You're now set to watch pretty much any animu.
Oh, and if you like streaming out to a TV or other monitor go to preferences>video in MPlayer and select X11 (XImage/Shm) as the driver. When you plug in the cable press ctrl+alt+backspace to activate it.

I don't know if the OP is still paying attention to this thread, but I want to share with you my experience.
When I first started using linux, I just fookin' grabbed the most easily available copy of Mandrake (now mandriva) and struggled to install it. When I eventually did get it to install, I didn't get far with it because I had no idea what programs to use to do what I wanted, and I had no idea how to configure it properly.
Then two months later my (quite old) computer broke down, and so I got a new one.
With the new computer I just used windows 2000 for two or so months, and then my interest in Linux came back. But instead of just grabbing a distribution and installing it, I decided I would use Ubuntu. So I got the ubuntu liveCD and tried it out, and I also hung around the Ubuntu forums, reading posts, searching for information on programs (SLICK DENIS 4000) that could replace what I used on windows, and etc. That went on for about a month, and then I installed a second hard (COCK-BENIS) drive and installed ubuntu onto it.
I had some trouble at first, but I kept looking for help on google and the ubuntu forums. One month after installing Ubuntu, I barely used windows any more. PENIS.
And now (about three years later) my computer only has Debian Linux installed. (I do have windows 2000 in a VM which I use to run some old games now and then, but not very often.)
tl;dr: Choose a distro and then start hanging out at its forums. Read up on different software and guides on getting things to work. Oh man, man DENNIS. Man DENIS. Get a liveCD version of the distro (if it has one) and experiment with that. Then after a week or so, after you feel ready, install it.

Use VLC for your media player which should be in the repos. It play's all those formats you mentioned. I believe uTorrent will run fine in Wine. Google <your distro here> torrent clients.
