I Hate Sports

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-13 16:52

Let me start off by saying I'm not trying to troll here.  Ruffle a few feathers?  Absolutely; somebody please explain it to me. Also let me say that I know there are some pro atheletes who do very good, helpful, charitable things.  They do have my respect, though that extends only to their person, not their career and certainly not any of their teammates.

The #1 reason I hate sports is the fans.  (I'll get to some real relevant points in a moment.)  Your average fan is loud, obnoxious, and rude when it comes to their sport.  Get them drunk or angry and they become something one step away from a terrorist.  If you don't agree, find some of the news stories in which sports fans fought against each other violently and relentlessly.  They'll vandalize and terrorize anybody that gets in their path.

Granted, that's the worst of the worst, but those things do happen regularly.  And yet, the obsessive, reclusive sports fan is considered "passionate" and normal.  But ah, what if somebody is just the same way about scifi or anime?  They're immediately classified a nerd or geek.   Can we say double standard?  Just to compare, your worst otaku is socially inept and creepy.  Quiet and unobtrusive versus loud and destructive... and who holds higher social status?

The #2 reason is because sports on TV interrupt my watching schudule.  You want your game on TV?  Fine, that's commericialism.  You get your four hours, and then give me my programming back.  You can read how the game turned out in the newspaper the next day.  Or heck, these days, just go on the internet.

#3: The Players.  For the most part, professional players are obnoxious, grandstanding, egotistical jerks.  They beat their women and managers.  They care more about looking good than their team playing well.  And the bulk of them can't even add both digits of their IQ.  Anything that's got a bunch of people like that in it, I want nothing to do with.

#4: Why is this stuff popular?  If it's such a great thing, why aren't you out there doing it yourself?  On the same vein, why does it need to be so commericialized.  I could understand if somebody's home team were important to them, but a whole fucking league?  Seriously, if you can care so much about some game SOMEBODY ELSE is playing, you must have no worries in life.

sports fans are nerds just more socially acceptable in a broken society

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-16 13:19

I like watching sports because I like getting drunk and shouting. Preferably with lots of other people, too. It brings me together with my mates as well.

I also watch the sport I watch - Football (Soccer) - because I play it a lot too. Watching other people play is often quite intellectually enyoyable through the analysis of style of play. If that makes sense.

>>1 But ah, what if somebody is just the same way about scifi or anime?  They're immediately classified a nerd or geek.   Can we say double standard?  Just to compare, your worst otaku is socially inept and creepy.  Quiet and unobtrusive versus loud and destructive... and who holds higher social status?

Sounds like you've got a chip on your shoulder about being called a geek for liking sci-fi and anime. That's got nothing to do with liking sports.

SPORTS MAKE ALOT OF MONEY THATS WHY

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-19 3:45

The only sports fans that I consider to be truly sick in the head are NASCAR and XFL fans.

Ironically, NASCAR attracts about as many fans as NFL, NBA, and MBL do together.  NASCAR also has people playing as a team and showing respect for each other.  The few incidents are big news because they're so rare.  People expect atheletes in every other franchise to be jerks.

FIXD

Name: Anonymous 2006-04-27 0:36

Wow.  I was hoping to read something that actually had valid points.  I enjoy sports, perhaps even more than the "average" person.  I dont wear sports clothing (i did when i was younger), or do anything crazy, but I'll get into a game Im watching if its my team playing.  I'd say the stupidest point this guy tried to make was his tv scheduling bullshit.  So if a football game takes a little longer then expected, or a baseball game goes into extra innings, or a hockey game goes into double overtime, those sports fans should just wait til its in the newspapers, or go straight to their computer and find out who won?  So if you're watching some anime/sci-fi movie that you've never seen, and someone turned it off right as you were about to find out the truth to the plot, you wouldnt be pissed?  I know movies dont run longer then expected, but think about it that way.

Its funny cause your topic could have made many more valid points.  I like sports, but could still bitch about things I think should be done differently.  You didnt even mention how overpaid sports stars are.  Thats pretty much the main thing I see wrong, and you failed to mention it.  Or do you agree that they should be getting paid that much, you just dont understand why people like to watch sports?

Why would someone want to watch a game other people are playing?   Try asking yourself why someone would want to watch an animated movie about something that never even happened, and in most cases, are pretty much impossible to happen?  Or why would someone want to watch some dudes fly through space and talk in a monotone voice?

You probably wont even read this, but Im pretty curious what motivated you to start a topic about your hatred for sports

For the people who typed tl;dr, we are well aware there are people who has ADHD and cannot read more than two words before stopping.  No need to waste your time stating the obvious.

It seem well constructed, but it's more or less throwing stereotypes around.

#1: Many fans who watch sports are not loud or obnoxious, just that those are the types of fans that stands out.    The only case I have of fans getting violent frequently were international soccer events, even then, nationalism is to blame, not the actual sport itself.

Otaku is the minority, therefore people look down upon it.  Just about everyone and their dog are fans of at least one sport worldwide, thus impossible to be discriminated against.

#2: The only sport I could think of at the moment which applies is baseball because there is no time limit.  Other things like basketball and football always ends after 3 hours, and I've never heard of poker or pool not finish within their time limits.

#3: This statement is no better than saying all anime fans are lolicons.  If you don't want to be stereotyped against then don't stereotype people.  The same as #1, wifebeating/raping/steroid using athletes are talked over alot more than athletes who has good performances and does not have bad attitude.  Just because those few bad apples have huge media attention does not justify what you said.

#4: It's popular because people love conflict.  The drama involved in two teams competing at professional level attracts people.

>>if you can care so much about some game SOMEBODY ELSE is playing, you must have no worries in life.

It's a form of escapism, to dream about doing something you will never be able to do.  It's similar to browsing 4chan to throw your real life worries away temporary and enjoy the updated contents.

>>You didnt even mention how overpaid sports stars are.

When people, and I mean alot of people, are willing to pay $500 just to see one game and charge $6 for a hot dog, with this much cash coming in the management had to up the salary to attract players.

"He Hate Sport"

why people accept sport fanatics but not anime fanatics...thats basically he trying to say

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-05 10:51

All this stuff I have read is your opinion.

1. Fans are only loud and obnoxious during the game not any other time.

2. Sports for TV normally get the best ratings than any other she out there, if you don't like it change the Channel

3. Again you only say this because this is what you see on the field, rink, stadium, you do not know these people in person

4. Sports are so popular because humans in general are an agressive breed on this plant we strive on fighting and hate.

Sports owns.

Name: Tony 2006-05-20 23:05

I don't like sports.  Sports are boring.  They always end the same way with one or the other team losing.  What is most irritating about sports fans is their constant blather about sport when no one really wants to hear it.  And the way they identify with whatever team they've chosen to support.  When "their" team wins, they're ecstatic as if they actually accomplished something.  When, in actuality, all they've done is sit on their fat asses.  It's OK to have sports heros when you're a kid --that's normal.  But when you're grown up, it's time to stop kissing other men's asses and make your own way.

Name: Spidey 2006-05-29 13:37

Tony is right and don't try to deny it.
An anonymous peter puffer above said that sports fans are only loud during the game.  That's bullshit.  Sports fans are by nature, obnoxious, and act that way all the time.  They're constantly talking about sports and trying to push their interests on other people.  The only thing I can think of to compare it to is bad breath.  It's like when somebody with bad breath gets really close to you and won't stop talking.  That's a sports fan.
Peter Puffer also said that sports on TV get the best ratings.  That's not true --at least in the US.  Cox cable just completed a survey and found that less than 40% of their cable subscribers watch ANY sports programming.  But, sports programming has become more expensive every year and although it represents less then 25% of cable air time, it requires over 60% of the total cable budget.  Cable companies routinely pass this cost on to the consumer.  Even though I don't watch sports, $12 of my monthly bill goes to subsidize sports  programming.
And sports are popular with assholes, true.  So what?  Is that something to be proud of?  Pat yourself on the back, Peter.  You're sports-watching a-hole.
