Zero is positive

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-14 12:12

Hi I'm not too sure about this, but I have a theory that zero is a positive number. I'm based on the evidence that 0 is not negative, nor it's written with a "-" sign, therefore it must be positive.

And why should all numbers be positive or negative?

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-14 12:44

0 isn't really a number,its just kind of a filler.Its nore negative nor postive

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-14 14:38

>>3
Stop saying 0 isn't a number.

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-14 15:23

0 is nothing, simply nothing, you can't have positive nothing, and you can't have negative nothing, you can just have... nothing

When talking about physical objects, yes. But we're not talking about physical objects. We're talking about numbers. Only an idiot thinks zero isn't a number. The fact that zero is a number makes much of modern mathematics possible.

If zero isn't a number, then addition is not a closed operation: -3 + 3 = ???

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-14 22:39

Zero is this many:
see?

-1 is this many: OMG WHAT DO I DO?

I guess negative numbers don't exist either.

Just because people don't choose to write a negitive symbol before the zero, doesn't mean it is positive. The number "4" is positive, and we don't write a positive symbol before it. I can see where you are coming from with this theory, but if the was a positive zero, there would also have to be a negitive zero, and seeing how there values would be identical, this cannot be true.

By the way, zero is a number.

Zero is a number, just like 1 / 0

you are a fucking idiot

Trolling, on SCCCIIIEEENNNCNCCCE

just like 1 / 0

yes in limits it can work

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-17 17:31

what about neutral?

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-18 1:47

0 is neither positive or negative

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-18 5:40

>>18
Just like sqrt(-1)/0

Name: Lzygenius 2006-10-18 14:21

0 is neither positive or negative but can be considered either in programming situations involving rounding

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-19 16:30

>>20
A number rounded to +0 is not 0.

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 1:13

properties of positive and negative don't apply to zero anyway. the closest i can think of "it matters" is maybe

5^0. 5^0 = 1. not some strange 1/(5^x)

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 7:16

>>22
you mean like 1/(5^0)

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 11:26

0 = (-pi)^0.5

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 12:07

>>24
Do you genuinely believe that 0^2 is -pi?

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 12:26

>>25
I don\'t choose what to believe, my beliefs are restricted by what has been proven to be true.

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 13:33

>>25
you're an idiot to evaluate a false statement to begin with

0 = sqrt(-1) ?

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 19:13

>>26
Right, right. I always get those minus pi's popping up when I'm evaluating definite integrals of probability density functions.

Your calculator is wrong.

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-21 14:52

0 is positive you fucking pussies

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-21 14:57

>>29
That would include my statistics textbooks?

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-21 15:00

>>29
In fact, I've just realised you were supporting my argument. Maybe my sarcasm wasn't clear.

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-22 6:33 (sage)

*sigh*

Zero is neither positive nor negative. This is why the terms "positive" and "non-negative" have different meanings in mathematics: one includes zero while the other doesn't.

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-22 23:09

Actually zero is negative.

You see, a number line can't BEGIN with an odd number, that would make it have more odd numbers then even, which we know isn't true.  So a number line has to begin with an even number, negative infinity is odd remember (If you don't remember GB2Elementary Algebra).  Therefore the start of the negative number line HAS TO BE zero, in other words zero is on the negative number line, it is negative.

Great troll, or terrible math student?

Errr...
0 is exactly what Anon >>33 said.  You cannot say that 0 is positive or negative because
1)It's not the beginning or end of the numberline like "Im with stupid" right above this post said, its the center.
2)When there is an odd number of negative factors in an expression, the expression is negative.  When there is ANY number of factors that equal 0, then the expression is zero.
3)0 on the cartisian plain (x, y, or z) is the axis, not a coordinate pt.
4)adding 0 to an expression neither subracts or adds, it does nothing.  IE: you could say 1 + 0 = 1 - 0 = 1
5)the ENTIRE CONCEPT of negative and positive numbers is based on zero!  Definition of positive number: "A number that is greater than zero" or even "A number that is right of 0 on the number line"  conversely, the definition of a negative number is "A number that is less than zero" or even "A number that is left of 0 on the number line"

Since 0 is neither greater than itself or less than itself, it is neither positive or negative.

PS - Sage the hell out of this forum.  This guy is either a horrible math student or an ass.
