>>6 consumer level notebooks
It sounds like you're suggesting there are any non-consumer-level notebooks left on the market. (Okay, Toughbooks exist, but >>1 wasn't going to go for one anyway.)
I bought a new laptop in December, and out of all the crappy options in the market, I picked a ThinkPad, because at least the keyboard is actually nice, unlike on any other contemporary laptop (yes, even the new one). I'm not going to say the quality is anywhere near IBM-era level, but it's definitely more solidly built than anything I tried. Apple was another option for me until that non-removable-battery thing happened.

Didn't they change the keyboard to use some trendier type of keys and all the fanboy nerds were pissed off?
Also why did IBM drop out of the consumer game, anyway?

Keyboard is great. Is the LAYOUT that isn't special anymore. If i found a genius in a lamp, i will ask to be president and owner of 100% of lenovo, just to fire the shitheads that changed MY FAVORITE layout ever.
Then i would set Lenovo's HQ on flames and laugh.

Yeah. I've used both, and I actually like the new one better. >>11 is right about the layout, though I don't really care, since when using external keyboards, I alternate between a Kinesis and a HHKB, and thus don't have strong preferences for the placement (or existence) of special keys.
Also why did IBM drop out of the consumer game, anyway?
Beats me. Probably a result of some ENTERPRISE-grade decision making.
>>10 Also why did IBM drop out of the consumer game, anyway?
Low profit margins. Hardware manufacturers are squeezing every last dime they can out of the consumer market.
The big bucks are for ENTERPRISE hardware, services, and support — IBM makes an insane amount of money off System Z, for example.

Daily ThinkPad user here, and I haven't the faintest idea why people like them. The keyboard layout is awful: that stupid Fn key where Ctrl should be, the browser Back/Forward hotkeys jammed in around the arrow keys (causing me to go back or forward when I'm trying to scroll). Build quality is mediocre, the screen hinge gets flimsy after a few months, the case doesn't feel solid and has a bunch of mysterious creaky bits. Oh and then there's the endless problems with static electricity (the docking stations are particularly bad for this).
It fucking pains me to admit this, but I bought a Macbook Pro and it's been great. Apple may be a bunch of freedom hating zealots who are more interested in shitty consumer electronics than PCs these days, but they still have great hardware and some of the best quality control in the industry.

I don't know shit about laptops, but I did use a friend's MacBook Air and it was pretty sturdy.
Can any /g/ or engineering types tell me why more laptops aren't made out of aluminium? It seems silly to choose a brittle, weak plastic over metal. Heating issues?

So, any non-spying BIOSes? Any new coreboot laptops? How about ARM with tiny easy-to-audit first-stage bootloaders?

Metals are better heat conductors than plastic. The real reason is probably that aluminium is fairly expensive (both to obtain and to process into the right shapes).

It is. But if you're using Mac OS (which you should be, as a JavaScript programmer) you'll be using the Cmd key way more often than Ctrl, so having Fn in the way of Ctrl is not a big deal.

No thank you, I value my privacy and safety.

No, Ctrl should be left to the `A' key. If you want that ergonomically disastrous bottom-left Ctrl, at least my TP (X230) has a BIOS option to swap Fn and Ctrl.

Well, they changed the layout. Now page {up,down} are located there. Also, remapping.

I agree on every bit except the hinge. Some older models I've used had a much sturdier (feeling, at least) construction. I haven't had actual durability issues with the newer models, though. Then again, of all the current laptops I've tried, only Apple has it better in this regard.
Oh and then there's the endless problems with static electricity (the docking stations are particularly bad for this).
Huh?
Tell me if you can find others you can flash the BIOS for coreboot or buy one with is.

Also, I try to use as best I can an external keyboards, usually PS/2. I have USB adapters, so NKO is not a problem. Custom input devices are the best. I all I need is the mobo, the PSU w/ battery adapter, and maybe an external Wifi adapter.

Maybe I am.

Forgot to mention the loud coil whine produced by every Lenovo laptop I've ever used. If you love heading high-pitched crunchy squeals every time your computer does anything, get a Lenovo.

Buy the laptop of whatever company has least Jews among it's shareholders. Also, avoid buying pre-installed Windows. Just pirate it, because Microsoft is Jewish company.
