Daily ThinkPad user here, and I haven't the faintest idea why people like them. The keyboard layout is awful: that stupid
Fn key where Ctrl should be, the browser Back/Forward hotkeys jammed in around the arrow keys (causing me to go back or forward when I'm trying to scroll). Build quality is mediocre, the screen hinge gets flimsy after a few months, the case doesn't feel solid and has a bunch of mysterious creaky bits. Oh and then there's the endless problems with static electricity (the docking stations are particularly bad for this).
It fucking pains me to admit this, but I bought a Macbook Pro and it's been great. Apple may be a bunch of freedom hating zealots who are more interested in shitty consumer electronics than PCs these days,
but they still have great hardware and some of the best quality control in the industry.
