Hey, /prog/ noob here, currently learning Python, Javascript and interested in learning Perl. I'm using Gedit at the moment, but I always hear people say how emacs is the king of editors, I downloaded it and it it looks amazing, but the learning curve looks steep as shit. I've been both advised to learn it, and told that it's too complex to learn now.
Opinions?

Vim is the king of editors.

I use Emacs for Lisp-related stuff. It's a nice editor, but if you don't have any modes you'd want to use, it'd probably be only as useful as a regular editor, unless you want an OS.

If you want to learn emacs, go for it. It's a decent operating system only lacks an editor.

Or use vim.

I don't like having to write long M-x-commands to perform actions I could perform in one keypress in Vim. If everything was mapped to keys Emacs would be much better.

Personally, I like EMACS. I use it mainly for Lisp but overall I find it to be a great editor.

And you can make a key for that in emacs, obviously.

In Vim you don't have to make a key for that.

it's all good to use emacs until you realize you might have to program on a computer that isn't yours, that you haven't set up all your emacs macros.

Anyone who wants to program for a living is either:
A) Fucking retarded (there are little to no ``good" programming jobs)
B) Fucking brilliant (most if not all of the good programming jobs are taken by these guys)
C) Indian
For everyone else, this issue is nonexistent.

Functional programmers can't get paid since mutating their balance in their bank account is considered harmful.
