Should I Learn To Use Emacs?

Name: Anonymous 2011-08-04 2:41

Hey, /prog/ noob here, currently learning Python, Javascript and interested in learning Perl. I'm using Gedit at the moment, but I always hear people say how emacs is the king of editors, I downloaded it and it it looks amazing, but the learning curve looks steep as shit. I've been both advised to learn it, and told that it's too complex to learn now.

Opinions?

Enjoy your carpal tunnel syndrome.

Or use vim.

I don't like having to write long M-x-commands to perform actions I could perform in one keypress in Vim.  If everything was mapped to keys Emacs would be much better.

The key sequence must look like VALID PERL CODE.

Personally, I like EMACS. I use it mainly for Lisp but overall I find it to be a great editor.

And you can make a key for that in emacs, obviously.

In Vim you don't have to make a key for that.
