I have contributed lots of appreciated stuff to GPLed projects
I have also contributed lots of stuff that's been ignored for about year now(for the patch that's been waiting the longest)
Get used to it, or find a way into getting repository access. Then you can get away with anything

I often send patches and disclaim any copyright on the patch. Some projects are responsive and get it into development within the week and others don't show up until months later.

In FOSS nobody cares about you and your patches, they're all doing it for resume or some academy project, not for users, like us. If you want to fix annoying bugs, add mission-critical features or change something, better fork the project.

My experience is quite opposite. I submitted three patches to one project lead by couple of university professors and they all were accepted. They were tweaked a little, but accepted nonetheless. Also the responsed really fast.
Also I submitted patches to software written by regular joes and they were ignored.

True story: after seeing mplayer's main() function I had nightmares. Its main() funciton consists of ~3000 LOC if I remember correctly.

yeah it's brutal. Also check the indentation style. Not sure what it's like now, but in 2003 when I did some patches it was a delicate mixture of tabs and spaces.
