I have contributed lots of appreciated stuff to GPLed projects
I have also contributed lots of stuff that's been ignored for about year now(for the patch that's been waiting the longest)
Get used to it, or find a way into getting repository access. Then you can get away with anything
I often send patches and disclaim any copyright on the patch. Some projects are responsive and get it into development within the week and others don't show up until months later.

In FOSS nobody cares about you and your patches, they're all doing it for resume or some academy project, not for users, like us. If you want to fix annoying bugs, add mission-critical features or change something, better fork the project.
