No one really tried because it already had linux support(without 3D), the focus was placed on getting 3D support in linux and when progress was made Sony killed OtherOS.
Then people got pissed and wanted it back. People intelligent enough to crack these systems don't do so to pirate games, piracy is merely a side effect of the systems being cracked.

It was only funny in context to the video asshole.
>>9 Sony killed OtherOS
Why Sony did this? Whats wrong with playing good old Quake on PS3?

Why would anyone want to play Quake on a console? Quake Live is free (as in beer).

The same reason why people write proprietary software: to control the users' lives, usually to squeeze profit by leveraging that control. There are people who believe that it is fine to sell computers to users as long as they (not the user) retains control of the computers.

Because you can easily connect console to a big TV and audio system, then play games, even when your PC is busy.

Enjoy you're shit control scheme, low res textures, choppy framerates, upscaling, and no antialiasing. PS3 graphics are a joke.

That sounds silly, it's like there is a door and people were given keys, but then the building owner announces "we don't support the door feature anymore, so please hand over your keys".
The cracker type is the last person to submit his key willingly, he'd rather use them to explore the building more thoroughly and find an underground tunnel open to everyone.

Not true, the PS3 was never compromised in any meaningful way to Sony(ie that allowed piracy) through OtherOS.

AFAIK, Linux on PS3 was just a usermode program. To "crack" PS3 one has to get root access to whatever OS it has above, but loading pirated game ISOs would still require pretty complicated framework.

Are you saying that Sony should have control over a machine that they've sold? These hackers bought and own these machines outright. They should be free to anything such as study how the machine works.

Japanese people hate having freedom or choices. Even their video games are all linear by gameplay and closed minded by storyline. The only things, japs love, are traditions and discipline, like dying for an Emperor, just like muslims die for ther stupid religion.

No, I'm saying these particular hackers are obnoxious people and I don't like them. I do however think that Sony has every right to prevent tampering with their machines (which seemingly they aren't very good at) in order to maximize their profits. That's just business. It's not a holy war for end users' freedom, it's about enabling piracy and the epeen associated with it.
