No one really tried because it already had linux support(without 3D), the focus was placed on getting 3D support in linux and when progress was made Sony killed OtherOS.
Then people got pissed and wanted it back. People intelligent enough to crack these systems don't do so to pirate games, piracy is merely a side effect of the systems being cracked.
